    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Things have turned complicated for both Milan and Atalanta after Jashari's fracture, which is set to keep the Swiss star out for eight weeks. Ivan Juric's side had scouted United States international Musah as one of the primary transfers this season but will have to remain patient and wait for Milan to work things out and come back with a response. However, the transfer window shuts next week, and the club will have to act quickly should they want the transfer to go through.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Atalanta are also interested in signing their long-time target Lutsharel Geertruida from RB Leipzig but face stiff competition. The Bergamo-based club lost out on signing him to the German side last year, but coach Ole Werner appears to prefer Ridle Baku in his position, making a move a possibility. Premier League side Nottingham Forest are also interested in the Dutch player and have been keeping tabs.

The 2024 Europa League winners have a laid-out plan for Musah as they consider him to be a fit for dual roles, given his versatility and to provide the club with rotation options. Musah was signed by Milan in 2023 and has a contract until 2028.

Dan Christian: 'T20 is the key to ensuring other formats survive'

When it comes to T20 cricket, Dan Christian has been there, done that, got the t-shirt and the trophies. As his career came to a close with Sydney Sixers defeat at the SCG on Thursday, he perhaps unsurprisingly left the game extolling the virtues of the format, and believes that what appears to be the unstoppable growth of T20 is the key to other parts of the game surviving.Christian ended with 409 T20 matches, currently the ninth-most ever, and nine trophies in the cabinet with success in England, the Caribbean and South Africa along with Australia. This year’s BBL, which has been a resurgent one for the competition, overlapped in part with the new leagues in South Africa and the UAE plus the Bangladesh Premier League. The BBL will actually be trimmed back, and perhaps as soon as next season if things can move fast enough, with a reduced 43-game tournament part of the new broadcast deal, but overall the amount of domestic T20 around the world is only likely to go one way.Related

“I don’t think we are really overloading it,” Christian said. “And I’m saying that based on how many people watch it on TV, [and] the crowd in Perth the other day was unbelievable and it will be a sellout in the grand final.”I understand there are plenty of competitions going on around the world but the reason there are plenty of competitions is that people want to watch them, be that at home on the couch or going through the gates.”Think the T20 game is the key to ensuring the other formats survive, it’s encouraging new people to come through the gates and new people to take the game up.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The format was barely out of nappies when Christian played his first T20 game in 2006 so he has witnessed the game’s evolution at first hand. He feels the biggest change is now the level of planning which goes into every moment of a match.”When it first started it was a bit Mickey Mouse, no one knew how to really play it, [it was] just an abbreviated one-day game but now all 240 balls are really well planned,” he said. “More often than not it’s one really good over that will win or lose the game whereas in the other formats you have plenty of time to make up for those good or bad overs. In T20, everyone is so precise now, the bowling is so precise and the batting is so good, you can’t miss or guys just hit it for six.”Christian, who was also capped 43 times by Australia and picked out his debut at the SCG as a career high point, had decided a little while out that this would be his final season having ended a long association with Nottinghamshire during the last English summer. There was no fairytale end, and the chance of a 10th title, as Heat took out a low-scoring scrap on a difficult SCG pitch.Coaching is a likely future path for Christian who had a taste of it during the men’s T20 World Cup in Australia earlier in the season when he worked with Netherlands.”I’ve been in the game so long, definitely not lining up to do a 9 to 5 job,” he joked. “I’ll probably put my hand up and try and get a gig somewhere.”I’ve really enjoyed being an older player and being able to help the younger guys in whatever way shape or form that I can, be it with tactics or with any kind of experience that I’ve had. I suppose coaching’s the exact same thing without the pressure of having to perform on the field.”Moises Henriques, Sixers’ captain, praised Christian as the ultimate team man who always wanted to be involved in critical moments of a match.”He’s always been a pleasure to play with. As a captain, he’s one of those guys who always wants to bat and always wants to bowl,” he said. “No matter where we are in the game he’s coming up and giving me a nudge on the shoulder. They are the type of guys you love having in your team because they are up for the contest.”I just hope he enjoys the next chapter of his life and doesn’t try to force it too quickly. He’s been playing cricket for a long time so hopefully for him it’s six months of golf somewhere, and just enjoy that, get his handicap even lower and then he can worry about working after that.”

He told : “We had a great first half, we were attacking, creating scoring chances. Then there was a strange play where one of their players gave the [Orlando] goalkeeper a pass and the referee said, he told me, he didn’t know the rule and didn’t see it that way.

“From there came their long pass and the goal. Sometimes there are errors in critical moments. It happened in the last game, too. Not excuses, but there are always issues with referees and I think MLS has to look at some of the officiating.”

Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the Ahmedabad Test, with the BCCI saying on the fifth morning of the match, that “a specialist opinion will be sought” to treat his lower-back injury. On Sunday, the fourth day, as India tussled for first-innings honours with Australia, Iyer couldn’t come out to bat, with the BCCI saying that he had been sent for scans after he “complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play”. India finished on 571 for a lead of 91. ESPNcricinfo understands Iyer was not present at the ground at any point on Sunday. The injury will particularly worry India since back trouble has dogged Iyer over the last few weeks: it kept him out of the first Test of this series, as well as the three-match ODI series against New Zealand that preceded it.After this Test match, Iyer’s next assignment is to captain Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, which begins on March 31. Knight Riders are scheduled to play their first match of the tournament on April 1, against Punjab Kings in Mohali.

Bangladesh pick Rony Talukdar after eight years for T20Is against England

Bangladesh have made five changes to their T20I squad for the first two matches against England later this month. Rony Talukdar returns to the set-up after eight years, Shamim Hossain makes comeback after a two-year absence, while Towhid Hridoy, Rejaur Rahman and Tanvir Islam have received their maiden call-ups to Bangladesh’s T20I squad. All five new inclusions did well in this season’s Bangladesh Premier League. Talukdar’s only international was a T20I against South Africa in 2015, but he was the second-highest run-getter in this year’s BPL – 425 at a strike rate of 129.17 – and he helped Rangpur Riders make it to the second qualifier. Towhid, who made the ODI squad after scoring 403 runs at a strike rate of 140 in the BPL, was the tournament’s third-highest run-getter.Shamim made only 175 runs with a strike rate of 135.65, but his 71 for Riders in the BPL eliminator helped him earn a recall. Shamim was long considered a future T20 hitter for Bangladesh and the selectors have shown a little more patience with him this time.Left-arm spinner Tanvir was the joint-highest wicket-taker in the BPL; his 17 wickets at an average of 17.58 helped Comilla Victorians win their fourth BPL title. Rejaur took 13 wickets at 19.84 apiece.Yasir Ali, Ebadot Hossain, Mosaddek Hossain, Shoriful Islam and Soumya Sarkar, who were all part of the squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia last year, were left out of the T20I squad. Yasir, Mosaddek and Soumya didn’t make major contributions in the BPL, while Ebadot and Shoriful didn’t play enough in the tournament to merit selection. After the ongoing ODI series, Bangladesh play three T20Is against England in Chattogram ( March 9) and Mirpur (March 12 and 14).Bangladesh squad for first two T20Is vs England Shakib Al Hasan (capt), Litton Das, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Nasum Ahmed, Nurul Hasan, Shamim Hossain, Rony Talukdar, Towhid Hridoy, Rejaur Rahman, Tanvir Islam

RCB eye smooth passage to playoffs as they face ousted SRH

Big Picture

On Sunday, Royal Challengers Bangalore shook up the standings by crushing Rajasthan Rajasthan Royals by 112 runs. The victory vaulted their net run rate from the depths of -0.344 to a much-safer 0.166. From hell to heaven. They are currently fifth with 12 points – best placed among three other teams with the same points, and hence with the best chance of making the playoffs. While Faf du Plessis has spearheaded their campaign with the bat – he is comfortably the tournament’s highest run-getter so far – RCB’s powerplay numbers with the ball stand out this season. They have the most wickets (30) among all sides in that phase – and the best average (18.46) – while also having the joint-best economy rate (7.41). Mohammed Siraj has led the way on the bowling front.RCB continue to be on the road – this will be their fifth successive away game – as they now face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi international stadium. This will be the first meeting between the two sides this season, with SRH already eliminated from the playoffs race.Heinrich Klaasen has been a bright spot for SRH – he is their top scorer with 326 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of over 170 – even as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mayank Markande have blown hot and cold.If SRH happen to beat RCB, they could take a step towards lifting themselves off the bottom of the table. A loss for RCB would be a big blow for them in what is almost a must-win game for them: they can potentially fall to sixth, below Royals, whom they had thrashed to move up the table.

Impact Player strategy

Sunrisers Hyderabad
SRH could continue using Anmolpreet Singh and left-arm quick T Natarajan as their Impact players – and swap them depending on whether they bat or bowl first – like in their last game, against Gujarat Titans.SRH probable XII: 1 Anmolpreet Singh, 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Rahul Tripathi, 4 Aiden Markram (capt), 5 Heinrich Klaasen (wk), 6 Sanvir Singh, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Marco Jansen, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Mayank Markande, 11 Fazalhaq Farooqi, 12 T NatarajanRoyal Challengers Bangalore
Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik had made way for left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed after RCB completed their innings against Royals last match. Anuj Rawat took over the gloves, and Shahbaz wasn’t required to bowl. But Karthik or Mahipal Lomror might continue to be substituted with a bowler.RCB probable XII: 1 Virat Kohli, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Glenn Maxwell, 4 Mahipal Lomror, , 6 Michael Bracewell, 7 Anuj Rawat, 8 Wayne Parnell, 9 Karn Sharma, 10 Harshal Patel, 11 Mohammed Siraj,

The big question

Stats that matter

  • After dismissing Wriddhiman Saha against Titans, Bhuvneshwar consolidated his position at the top of the most wicket-takers in the first over of an IPL game. He now leads with 25 wickets, and is joint second this season with five, along with Siraj.
  • RCB’s reliance on their top order is evident by the fact that No. 5 onwards, their batters have the lowest runs (443), and thus also the lowest average (15.82), among all teams this season.
  • For a minimum of 25 balls faced from pace bowlers in T20s, Glenn Maxwell’s strike rate of 96 and 105 against T Natarajan and Bhuvneshwar is his lowest and third lowest, respectively. Meanwhile, Maxwell has played more than double the number of balls (146) while batting at No. 4 this season, than he has while at No. 3 (64).
  • SRH have won six games – including a Super Over victory – against RCB in Hyderabad. Their only loss was a rain-affected DLS defeat in 2015. Karn Sharma, who was then with SRH, will now be in the opposition camp.

Pitch and conditions

It should be hot and humid in Hyderabad on Thursday evening. The average score batting first this season there has been 172, and four out of six games have been won batting first.

Yorkshire Vikings winning run came to a shuddering halt when Derbyshire Falcons thrashed them by 144 runs in the Vitality Blast North Group match at Chesterfield. The Vikings were bidding for a club-record seven straight wins in the T20 but were dismantled by a stunning Falcons batting display.Haider Ali lit the fuse with 59 off 41 balls before Leus du Plooy and Brooke Guest plundered 93 from 34 balls to take the Falcons to 212 for 4.Du Plooy smashed five sixes in an unbeaten 66 off 32 balls while Guest cleared the ropes three times in his 39 not out from 18 deliveries.Ben Mike bore the brunt of the Falcons onslaught, conceding 74 from four overs, the sixth most expensive spell in world T20 cricket and the third worst in this country. The visitors slim chances of chasing down 213 vanished when they slumped to 29 for five in the powerplay and they were skittled for 68 in the 12th over as the Falcons celebrated their biggest-ever T20 victory and a sixth consecutive win over the Vikings at Chesterfield. There was little sign of the mayhem that unfolded in front of a sellout 5000 crowd when the Vikings won the toss and restricted the Falcons to 70 for 3 at the halfway point of their innings.Dom Bess struck in his second over when Luis Reece skied a pull to cover but Harry Came responded by driving Jordan Thompson for six before pulling and steering Mike for boundaries.Mike had his only success of a chastening day when Came went for another big shot off the last and was caught at mid off to leave the Falcons on 48 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. The Vikings got the big wicket of Wayne Madsen in the next over when he called for a sharp single to midwicket and was run out by Thompson’s direct hit.But the game began to unravel for the visitors with Ali cutting a short ball from Mike over backward point for six before smashing Revis over the long off boundary in the 13th ove.He whipped Thompson into the crowd over square leg but was brilliantly caught by Jafer Chohan trying to repeat the shot. But from then on the flow of runs turned into a torrent with du Plooy driving Mike over extra cover for a big six as 22 came off the 16th over.Another 22 came from the next two overs with Guest pulling a Thompson no ball for six before du Plooy and Guest dispatched Mike to all parts of Queen’s Park.Du Plooy pulled and drove the medium pacer for three sixes and Guest signed off with two more maximums with 31 coming from the last over.It added up to carnage with the Falcons plundering 91 off the final five overs and the game was over as a contest when the Vikings lost four wickets in the first four overs.Adam Lyth skied Alex Thomson to mid off, James Wharton chipped back a return catch to Zak Chappell before Dawid Malan was bowled coming down the pitch to Thomson. When Johnny Tattersall miscued Chappell to mid on, the Vikings were 7 for 4 and former Derbyshire favourite Shan Masood joined the procession when he became Chappell’s third victim. The Vikings were 68 for 9 when rain delayed the inevitable for 50 minutes but five balls after the restart Chappell took the winning catch to consign Yorkshire to their lowest score in T20 cricket.

But Boland, Fergus O’Neill (3-48) and spinner Todd Murphy (2-54) helped trigger a collapse of 6 for 41.”I would have liked to have stayed over in New Zealand if I was playing, but there was an opportunity to play back here,” Boland said. “I’ve spent so much time carrying the drinks this year so it’s been nice to be back on the field.
