According to , the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has approved a new rule under which Serie A players’ salaries will automatically be reduced by 25% if their club is relegated to Serie B. This change forms part of a new five-year collective bargaining agreement signed between Lega Serie A and the Italian Players' Association (AIC). The rule will apply to all contracts signed after September 2, 2025.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

For years, Serie A clubs have pushed for contractual flexibility to manage financial losses following relegation, especially due to reduced TV revenue. Until now, teams relied on selling players or terminating contracts to cut costs. This structural change provides an automatic mechanism for wage adjustment while allowing exceptions if clubs and players negotiate alternative terms. The rule is designed to make the system more sustainable and fair for both parties.

  • TELL ME MORE…

The new rule, Article 5.2, paragraph 7 of the Serie A players' collective bargaining agreement, says: "In the event of a team's relegation to Serie B, the fixed salary is automatically reduced by 25%, without, however, the recalculated salary being allowed to fall below the minimum limit set, depending on the player's age group, by the Serie A players' collective bargaining agreement. The reduction referred to in this paragraph takes effect from the season immediately following the one in which the relegation occurs and remains in effect for any subsequent seasons, except in the case of a new promotion to Serie A, which will result in the original salary level being restored, any agreements to the contrary in individual contracts are in any case reserved." This means clubs and players can negotiate a salary based on the competition the club is or will be involved in. "That varies depending on the championship and/or international competition in which the club participates or will participate."

  • WHAT SERIE A SAID

“This agreement represents a significant step forward for our football system,” said Lega Serie A President Ezio Simonelli. "It is a historic agreement, both for its content and the method used to reach it: a process of constructive dialogue, developed over time with a spirit of responsibility and a shared vision. This result confirms how institutional dialogue and collaboration between Lega and AIC are essential tools for addressing the challenges of modern football with balance and foresight."

He added: "Our goal, as Lega Serie A, is to contribute to an increasingly solid, fair, and sustainable system, in which the needs of clubs and players can be reconciled in the shared interest of protecting and growing the sport."

AIC President Umberto Calcagno shared a similar view, stating: "The new agreement is the result of constructive dialogue between the parties, with a view to safeguarding the interests of the entire system."

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has ruled out Lionel Messi for the team’s Florida Derby match against Orlando City SC, saying he doesn’t want to risk the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“Leo will not be available tomorrow. He’s fine, but obviously it would be crazy to risk taking him to Orlando with everything we have ahead of us,” he said.

The manager expressed optimism for a quick return.

“We’re optimistic he’ll be back with us soon.”

Messi was forced off just seven minutes into last Saturday’s Leagues Cup match against Necaxa after colliding with two players from the Mexican side, which left him unable to continue.

Messi also missed the group stage finale against Pumas in the Leagues Cup and will now sit out another crucial match against a direct rival in the Eastern Conference, with Mascherano choosing to prioritize his star’s long-term fitness over short-term results.

Despite Messi's absence, Miami have had continued success due to the arrival of fellow Argentina international Rodrigo De Paul. Mascherano pointed to his impact as a difference maker.

“It’s important that he can contribute with goals. Both he, Tadeo, and Telasco have been putting up very good numbers," he said.

Regarding their upcoming Leagues Cup quarterfinal clash with Tigres, the Argentine coach noted, “Tigres is a great team. They showed it last night against Puebla [a 7–0 win]. They’re a team that always competes for big things.”

Hull three-for, Budinger onslaught see Leicestershire past Yorkshire

Foxes sprint to seven-wicket victory with almost six overs to spare

ECB Reporters Network31-May-2024Leicestershire Foxes launched their Vitality Blast season in spectacular style with a thumping seven-wicket win over Yorkshire Vikings at the Uptonsteel County Ground in Leicester.Vikings had themselves started the season strongly with an eight-wicket win over Worcestershire Rapids the previous evening but were brought crashing back to earth in the East Midlands. They totalled a below-par 151 for 7, captain Shan Masood’s 45 off 32 balls standing out amid a bitty team effort which was heavily damaged by Josh Hull’s fiery 3 for 28.The moderate target soon appeared minuscule after Foxes openers Sol Budinger (50 off 22) and Rishi Patel (30 off 18) smashed six sixes and six fours in the first five overs. Their stand of 79 in 36 balls turned the chase into a cruise as Foxes galloped to 155 for 3 from 14.1 overs. After Foxes chose to bowl, Hull deployed his size 15s to excellent effect in a first over which cost just one run and brought the wicket of Dawid Malan, whose off stump was trimmed by a lovely ball. Ian Holland’s opening over also went for just a single in a sedate start by Vikings.Former Yorkshire allrounder Ben Mike struck first ball when he took a return catch from a spliced slog by Adam Lyth. That brought Joe Root to the crease for the 659th time in senior cricket and it isn’t a knock he will remember – three from nine balls before lifting Holland to long-on.Masood and Donovan Ferreira added 50 in 35 balls before Hull came back on to dismiss both in his first five balls. Ferreira gloved an attempted pull high to wicketkeeper Ben Cox and Masood top-edged a return catch. Both wickets owed something to the batters being surprised by pace in a highly impressive spell by the 6ft 7in left-armer.When Hull added a smart catch at short fine leg to dismiss Dom Bess off Scott Currie, Vikings were 116 for 7. Jordan Thompson smote Mike for successive sixes but Vikings’ bowlers were left with a tall task on a good batting pitch. They were hit by an immediate onslaught from Patel and Budinger who thrashed 50 from the first 22 balls. Patel lifted Dan Moriarty for successive sixes before the fourth over, from Thompson, went for 30 including three sixes for Budinger. Both openers perished in five balls went Patel skied Bess to long-on and Budinger sliced Jafer Chohan to backward point but they had left their side needing a comfy 67 from 80 balls. Louis Kimber and Wiaan Milder kept the momentum high with vibrant cameos and Foxes skipper Peter Handscomb was able to watch contently from the non-striker’s end as his side cruised home.

Worcestershire to wear 33 on playing shirts in memory of Josh Baker

Worcestershire will wear Josh Baker’s No. 33 on their playing shirts for the remainder of the season as a tribute to the left-arm spinner who passed away last week, aged 20.Baker, who had made two County Championship appearances this season, died suddenly on May 2. He was a popular member of the Worcestershire dressing room, signing his first contract with the county aged 17 in 2022. He took 43 wickets in 22 first-class matches and 27 in 25 limited-overs appearances. He had also represented England at under-19 level. The day before his passing, he had taken 3 for 66 in the first innings of Worcestershire’s four-day 2nd XI Championship match against Somerset at Bromsgrove School. The match was called off early on the final day. Players wore black armbands as a mark of respect during the most recent round of the County Championship, which began on May 3.Worcestershire declined to comment on the nature of Baker’s death, asking for “the respect of privacy” on behalf of his family. Having consulted with the family, Baker’s teammates have decided to honour his memory by wearing his squad number on the front of their shirts, under the club crest.”It is clear from the outpouring of love we’ve seen, following last week’s awful news, that Josh touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him,” said Worcestershire CEO Ashley Giles in a statement released on Wednesday.”Wearing Josh’s number on their shirts is a way for the team, and all involved with Worcestershire cricket, to pay tribute to his memory and keep his spirit alive on the field.”Josh’s mum and dad, Lisa and Paul, have asked us to thank everyone for the hundreds of messages of love and support that they have received since Josh’s passing.”As we all continue to navigate through this very difficult time, we encourage our members, supporters, and the cricketing community to join us in honouring Josh’s memory and celebrate the life of a remarkable young man who will forever hold a special place in our hearts.”Worcestershire will wear the commemorative shirts for the first time on Friday, when they play Kent at Canterbury in Division One.

Revealed: Liverpool's big transfer fear over Ibrahima Konate amid Real Madrid interest

Real Madrid have reportedly sent shockwaves through Anfield after opening direct lines with Ibrahima Konate over a blockbuster move to the Bernabeu. The 26-year-old has become one of the Premier League’s most dependable centre-backs at Merseyside, but his future now hangs in the balance. Madrid’s interest comes at a critical moment as his contract with the Reds runs out at the end of this season, leaving the club at risk of losing him for nothing.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Determined not to repeat the painful Trent Alexander-Arnold saga, Liverpool’s hierarchy are scrambling to tie Konaté down to fresh terms but fear he's already agreed a deal to move to Madrid. The club are set to table a lucrative new deal within days, hoping to keep one of Arne Slot’s few fit senior defenders at Anfield. Every possible lever is being pulled, all aimed at convincing the France international to commit his future to Merseyside. The message from the boardroom is clear: they cannot afford to see him walk away for free.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to Liverpool's stance is firm. If Konate turns down this new offer again, the club will consider putting him on the market before the transfer window shuts. While they would rather keep him, selling now would at least ensure a minimum fee instead of watching him depart for nothing next summer.

  • TELL ME MORE

Real Madrid, meanwhile, are quietly playing the long game. The Anfield bosses fear that Konate has already made a verbal commitment to Los Blancos. If that’s true, Madrid could simply wait until January, when Konate would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement.

Xabi Alonso’s squad planning has also been adjusted to accommodate a potential new arrival. By keeping a place open in the senior team, by registering Franco Mastantuono with Real Madrid Castilla, the Merengues are ensuring they have space for Konate without needing to offload any existing first-team members.

The transfer all but confirms Liverpool are bracing for any eventuality, including the worst-case scenario of losing Konate before the transfer window is closed.

Liverpool step up moves for TWO new defenders as Reds open £35m Marc Guehi talks & eye Giovanni Leoni hijack before transfer deadline

According to , Liverpool are keen to bring in more defensive reinforcements before the summer transfer window closes and have lined up deals for Guehi and Leoni. Crystal Palace are somewhat open to selling Guehi as they don't want to lose him for free next year when his contract runs out, while the Reds reportedly see Leoni as "the best of the young centre-backs in Europe".

A deal for Guehi worth £35 million ($47.3m/€40m) – £30m up front and £5m more in add-ons – is being discussed with Palace, while it is thought a similar fee would be enough to sign Leoni. Inter are big admirers of the teenage Parma star but current financial restraints may prevent Cristian Chivu's side from making a move this summer.

Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate currently make up Arne Slot's first choice centre-back partnership at Anfield, with just Joe Gomez available as natural cover after Jarell Quansah moved to Bayer Leverkusen earlier in the window. However, Gomez is currently injured, so further depth is being sought and it is not believed signing one of Guehi or Leoni would stop the other also arriving on Merseyside. The Reds have decided to enter club-to-club talks with Palace first because of their respect for the Eagles and co-owner and chairman Steve Parish, according to Ben Jacobs.
