Middleton, Fuller chalk off runs to put Hampshire on the board

Notts hopes extinguished as sixth-wicket pair secure Hampshire’s first win of season

ECB Reporters Network20-May-2024Hampshire needed just 80 minutes of the final day to complete a five-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire in the Vitality County Championship at Trent Bridge.Five down overnight – and with Tom Prest likely to bat only in extremis after suffering a shoulder fracture in the field on day one – Hampshire still needed 85 runs to chase down a target of 169 when they resumed, which looked potentially trickyIn the event, Fletcha Middleton and James Fuller built on the foundations laid on Sunday evening to compile an unbroken match-winning partnership of 127. Allrounder Fuller finished 77 not out with opener Middleton unbeaten on 59.It is Hampshire’s first win of the season but their ninth victory in the last 12 Championship matches between themselves and Nottinghamshire and their sixth in seven since they last suffered defeat in 2018Hampshire finished just behind runners-up Essex in third place in last season’s Division One table but have been out of form so far and the 20 points picked up here will come as a relief in what may prove an unforgiving division this year.A first century of the season by allrounder Lyndon James rescued Nottinghamshire from 50 for 6 in their first innings but – the Middleston-Fuller partnership apart – the key passage of batting in the contest was the 157-run stand between Liam Dawson and Keith Barker for Hampshire’s sixth-wicket on Saturday, which enabled the visitors to claim a narrow first-innings lead, despite England’s Olly Stone impressing with the ball.Nottinghamshire’s top order again found the going tough at the start of their second innings, losing three wickets before even wiping out the arrears, and though they were bolstered by half-centuries by Joe Clarke and Jack Haynes, the 169-run target left was always going to be difficult to defend, even allowing for more damage inflicted by the new ball. They gave themselves a chance by reducing Hampshire to 44 for 5 on Sunday evening before Middleton and Fuller weathered the storm, getting through the last eight overs to stumps unscathed. An early breakthrough looked vital as the last day began under cloudy skies but none of the Nottinghamshire seamers could conjure much out of the pitch and any hope that legspinner Calvin Harrison could turn the contest vanished when he conceded 21 runs in a single over to rush Hampshire towards a win that was finally achieved when Fuller guided a ball from James to the fine leg boundary for his eighth four.

Despite rumours over his managerial job, Solskjaer is pushing ahead with the squad boost at Besiktas. The Turkish side has reportedly agreed a €9.5 million fee with Leicester to sign the Nigerian midfielder, as reported by Sky's Florian Plettenberg. The 28-year-old has agreed to a three-year contract, with an option for a fourth. Ndidi, who joined the English club in 2017, is set to undergo a medical in Istanbul on Thursday.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ndidi’s arrival provides much-needed steel in midfield for Besiktas, who finished fourth in the Turkish Super Lig last season and are looking to bounce back stronger. However, Solskjaer’s position at the club remains uncertain following a 4-2 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of the Europa League second qualifying round.

The former Manchester United manager was appointed in January 2025, but reports in Turkey suggest the club is already weighing up other managerial options, with Nuri Sahin and former manager Sergen Yalcin as potential candidates.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Ndidi reportedly had offers from European clubs, including Everton, Valencia and Real Betis. But the 28-year-old defensive midfielder chose to join Solskjaer’s project in Istanbul. The Nigerian recorded one goal and five assists in 30 matches for Leicester last season.

WHAT NEXT FOR OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER AND BESIKTAS?

While the new signings like Ndidi may offer short-term solutions, Solskjaer is believed to be on thin ice. Meanwhile, Besiktas, who had a controversial transfer fallout with defender Kyle Walker-Peters, continues to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season. The Turkish club has reportedly enquired about Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey, who had a quiet season with the Premier League side last season.

Payne, Taylor share eight wickets as Gloucestershire triumph over Essex

David Payne and Matt Taylor claimed four wickets apiece as Gloucestershire opened their Vitality Blast account with an impressive five-wicket victory over Essex at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.Making his first appearance of the season, Payne took three wickets with the new ball and then removed dangerman Daniel Sams to finish with 4 for 24, while Taylor eclipsed the tail to return career-best T20 figures of 4 for 22 from four overs and restrict last season’s beaten finalists to 141 for 9.Jordan Cox top-scored with 48 and dominated a stand of 64 in 6.5 overs for the fourth wicket with Paul Walter, who contributed 43, but the failure of seven batsmen to reach double figures fatally undermined the innings after Essex had been put in.Gloucestershire made relatively light work of chasing a modest target, James Bracey posting 49 from 30 balls and dominating a stand of 83 in seven overs with Cameron Bancroft, who weighed in with 32 as the home side took control. Ben Charlesworth finished unbeaten on 22 as Gloucestershire wrapped up victory beneath the Bristol floodlights with 18 balls to spare.Gloucestershire’s decision to insert last season’s runners-up was fully justified when Payne claimed wickets with his second and third deliveries, having Dean Elgar held at short third man and then producing a magnificent in-swinger to uproot Michael Pepper’s middle stump as the visitors stumbled out of the starting blocks. His dander up, the veteran left-arm seamer struck again in his next over, Adam Rossington pushing half forward to a ball that left him and offering a routine catch behind as Essex further subsided to 11 for 3. A wicket maiden meant Payne boasted figures of 3 for 6 from two overs.Cox fought fire with fire, hoisting Matt Taylor over the long-off boundary for the first six of the innings and then repeating the feat at the expense of Marchant de Lange, while Walter greeted the advent of Beau Webster with an off-driven four as the fourth wicket pair staged a recovery, Essex advancing to 49 for 3 at the end of the powerplay. In the absence of the injured Tom Smith, Graeme van Buuren was required to take pace off and keep things tight during the middle overs, and the slow left armer almost removed Cox on 46, putting down a sharp chance off his own bowling. But there was no escape for Cox, who attempted to drive de Lange and skied a catch to mid-off in the next over, the former Kent batsman departing for a 27-ball 48 that included four fours and three sixes with the score on 75 in the tenth.Webster, van Buuren and de Lange more or less cut off the supply of boundaries during the middle overs and Walter, under pressure to up the tempo, attempted to pull the returning Matt Taylor and top-edged a catch behind, departing the scene for a 30-ball 43. He had accrued five fours and a six and, at 110 for 5 in the 15th over, the innings was sorely in need of acceleration.Heavily dependent upon talismanic Australian all-rounder Sams, Essex were dealt a further blow when their overseas chipped Payne to short extra having contributed just nine with the score on 119 in the 16th. Matt Taylor then accounted for Matt Critchley, caught and bowled for 16, Luc Benkenstein and Simon Harmer in the penultimate over as Essex faltered badly at the death.Needing to make early in-roads, Essex removed Miles Hammond in the first over, Harmer taking a superb diving catch at slip off the bowling of Sams. But new batsman Bracey quickly redressed the balance, harvesting a six and a four from successive Aaron Beard deliveries and then producing an outrageous reverse scoop to claim another maximum, this time at the expense of Sams, as the powerplay yielded 64 and the second wicket alliance realised 50 in 28 balls. With the rate now down to a run a ball and nine wickets still in hand, Gloucestershire’s batsmen were not obliged to take undue risk. But Bracey was clearly in a hurry, the 27-year-old left-hander helping himself to three fours and four sixes to put the visitors firmly on the back foot.Bancroft had scored a useful 32 from 18 deliveries with six fours when Benkenstein bowled the Australian via a big inside edge to afford Essex hope. Beard then had Bracey held on the deep mid-wicket boundary in the next over and Jack Taylor succumbed to Critchley’s leg breaks for seven as Gloucestershire slipped to 100 for 4 in the twelfth.Thereafter, Webster and Charlesworth matched one another blow for blow in a partnership of 35 for the fifth wicket as Gloucestershire overhauled their target with a minimum of fuss to afford their short format campaign lift-off in front of an appreciative Bristol audience.

'Scar that reminds us who we are' – Nicolás Larcamón on Cruz Azul’s uphill climb in Leagues Cup after narrow win over LA Galxay

Cruz Azul responded to a disastrous 7-0 defeat against the Seattle Sounders with a narrow penalty shootout win over LA Galaxy – their first sign of life in what’s been a turbulent Leagues Cup. After a 1-1 draw in regulation, La Máquina held their nerve in the shootout, winning 8-7 to earn two points.

The result doesn't guarantee survival, but it keeps a faint hope alive heading into their final group-stage clash with Colorado Rapids. Head coach Nicolás Larcamón acknowledged the emotional weight his team is carrying after such a rough start.

“It was a crucial test for all of us… hopefully, it becomes a scar that reminds us who we are and who we need to be. Inside the group, it felt like a very positive step,” he said.

While their position remains fragile, Larcamón emphasized the resilience shown by his players.

“We turned adversity into an opportunity," he said. I owe a lot to the fans – and I’m determined to repay that. Thanks to the strength of this group, I believe we’re on the right path. Hopefully, by the end of this tournament, that debt will be settled.”

Advertisement@CruzAzulTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Cruz Azul could go down as the biggest disappointment of the Leagues Cup if they fail to reach the quarterfinals – a scenario that is no longer in their hands. The 7-0 thrashing by the Seattle Sounders, followed by earning just two points against LA Galaxy, has left La Máquina on the brink.

Larcamón will now be under intense scrutiny. His appointment was already controversial, having replaced Vicente Sánchez shortly after the Uruguayan led the team to a Champions Cup title. At the time, Larcamón and Cruz Azul were reportedly already in advanced talks, a move many within the fanbase viewed as disloyal toward Sánchez.

Getty Images SportWHAT LARCAMÓN SAID

Despite the blowout loss and tepid follow-up, the Argentine manager remained focused on the long-term project and the bond within the squad.

“Life often throws challenges at you in unexpected ways," he said. "My players have shown real character, and I want to publicly thank them for that."

Larcamón highlighted how the response to the Seattle game began off the field.

“We did a lot of internal work – focused on who we are, how we relate to one another," he said. "Now it’s time to translate that into action, to show it with results. Especially for the fans, who are the ones we truly owe.”

Quais títulos Carlos Alberto conquistou? Relembre carreira do ex-jogador

– Campeonato Carioca 2002 (Fluminense)
– Campeonato Português 2003/2004 (Porto)

– Mundial de Clubes 2004 (Porto)
