Tilak Varma and Arshdeep Singh have been picked in the India A squad for the last two four-dayers against the visiting England Lions in Ahmedabad. Rinku Singh, who has made a big splash in T20 cricket, is set to play his first game for India A after having been selected for the second* and third four-dayers.Rinku was recently with the India Test squad in South Africa as a reserve player, after he was added to the squad for the four-day match against South Africa A. He has played 43 first-class matches so far, scoring 3099 runs at an average of 58.47. While Rinku was only selected for the last four-dayer, his UP team-mate Yash Dayal found a place in the squads for both the remaining games against England Lions.Jharkhand wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Kushagra was also picked in the squad, with Railways’ Upendra Yadav being the spare keeper. The pair replaced KS Bharat and Dhruv Jurel, who both will join the senior side for the first two Test matches against England in Hyderabad and Vizag.Bengal’s Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was the reserve opener in South Africa but missed the cut for the home Tests against England, will continue to captain the India A side. Manav Suthar and Pulkit Narang, who are currently playing the first four-dayer against England Lions, though were not part of the squad for the next two games.Washington Sundar was also called up to the India A squad for both games. Saurabh Kumar, another spinner who has been on the fringes of the India Test team, will partner Washington in the second match. Mumbai left-arm fingerspinner Shams Mulani will replace Saurabh for the final game. His Mumbai team-mate Tushar Deshpande found a place in the squad for both matches.Washington had originally planned to link up with his state team Tamil Nadu for their Ranji Trophy clash against Railways in Coimbatore, which began two days after the Bengaluru T20I, where he came away with 3 for 18 in his three overs. Zlatan Ibrahimovic texts message of support to Sweden star Smilla Holmberg after crucial penalty miss in defeat to England at Euro 2025

At the end of a ridiculous penalty shootout which saw nine shots either saved or missed in total, Holmberg stepped up but could only lift her effort clear of the bar, helping England reach the semi-finals where they will face Italy.

Holmberg was pictured in tears after the shootout and was consoled by her Sweden team-mates, but she has also been contacted by Ibrahimovic, according to her father. Ibrahimovic is widely regarded as the greatest Swedish footballer of all time but he also suffered spot-kick heartache in 2004, when his miss against the Netherlands resulted in defeat with a squad containing the likes of Freddie Ljungberg and Henrik Larsson.

WHAT WAS SAID

Holmberg's father, Ola Persson, told Swedish radio: "It was a sad daughter I held in my arms about an hour after the game. She is strong and she has received a lot of support from both the team, supporters, friends and relatives. She even got a text message from Zlatan here this morning."

Behrendorff hopes towering 12-month run translates to T20 World Cup ticket

Again fit and firing, and coming off an eye-catching year where he enjoyed a breakout IPL season, left-arm quick Jason Behrendorff hopes his success on slower surfaces will prove alluring as the national hierarchy contemplate Australia’s squad for the T20 World Cup.Behrendorff will be pushing his selection case in the upcoming three-match T20I series against West Indies starting on Friday in Hobart. He is one of four quicks in Australia’s squad with Behrendorff likely to play in two of the matches, including game three at Optus Stadium in what will be his first international appearance on his home ground.”There’s probably going to be a bit of rotation [with the quicks],” Behrendorff told reporters in Perth. “Anytime you get to play cricket for Australia in a World Cup year… it’s a great opportunity to put your name up. I’m really happy that I’m involved in the squad. Hopefully, I can continue to play some good cricket.”Behrendorff, 33, has long been identified as an appealing option for Australia. Towering at 6 foot 4, Behrendorff generates an awkward bounce and can swing the ball sharply. Behrendorff was once considered a potential Test replacement for Mitchell Johnson, but constant back issues meant he had to focus on the shorter formats. He has not played a first-class match since late 2017, but continually starred, over the years, for BBL powerhouse Perth Scorchers and for Western Australia in the 50-over Marsh Cup.Related

Behrendorff occasionally played white-ball cricket for Australia and memorably claimed a five-wicket haul at Lord’s during the 2019 World Cup, where he ripped through eventual champions England in a 64-run Australia victory. But Behrendorff’s body constantly betrayed him and he appeared to be overtaken by a slew of emerging quicks, including state team-mates Jhye Richardson and Lance Morris. As he entered his 30s, there were fears that Behrendorff might have missed his chance but he’s been able to stay on the park for the last couple of years leading to a revival at the international level.”I’ve had a decent run at just playing cricket and staying on the park, so I’ve been able to develop my game and just get that consistency,” he said. “That was the thing with those injuries from 24 to 29, I played maybe six months out of every 12.”Hopefully I can really tack that [years] onto the back end of my career and play as much as I possibly can into my late 30s.”After an impressive IPL season with Mumbai Indians, where he claimed 14 wickets in 12 matches, Behrendorff last September ended a two-year international absence when he took 2 for 25 in a T20I against South Africa in Durban. He subsequently was a standout for Australia during the now-forgotten T20I series against India in the immediate aftermath of the World Cup. In uncompromising conditions for quicks, Behrendorff was outstanding in four matches with 6 wickets at 17.83 and an economy rate of 6.68.Behrendorff had an epic performance of 1 for 12 in four overs, including 17 dots, to defy the conditions in Guwahati as India racked up 222 for 3 in game three. He was a constant threat with the new ball in trademark fashion but also showed his prowess at bowling through different phases in the innings as he unfurled his repertoire of canny slower balls, cutters and yorkers. It led to Behrendorff recently being named Australia’s T20I player of the year.”I played four out of five games and there were short turnarounds, so that was really a big confidence boost for me in terms of getting on the park day after day,” Beherendorff said. “I was able to execute my skills, that was the biggest thing for me.”It was a great learning opportunity for me and getting to bowl in different phases of the innings in an international match.”The slower surfaces in India are somewhat similar to the pitches in the Caribbean, where Australia will be entirely based at the T20 World Cup also co-hosted by the United States.Australia haven’t toured the Caribbean often in the past decade, but Behrendorff did play two T20Is in Saint Lucia in 2021. Australia will travel there to play Scotland in a group fixture on June 15.”It was an amazing experience to play over there…get used to those sorts of wickets which are a bit different,” he said. “Some of them are similar to what we faced in India in recent times.”So I guess drawing on that bank of knowledge, knowing what I do really well but also adapt to those conditions and the size of the grounds [if he plays].”While he waits for his T20 World Cup fate, Behrendorff will soon return to Mumbai as he looks to build on last season’s IPL campaign.”It’s an exciting period with Hardik Pandya coming back and it’s going to be a great feel around that group again,” he said. “Hopefully we can get back up towards the top of the table.”

The Catalan outfit have revealed that Yamal has signed a new contract until 2031 and he has taken the number 10 jersey for next season. The 18-year-old will now wear the shirt vacated by Ansu Fati, who joined Monaco on loan, and was previously worn by club legends Messi, Diego Maradona, and Ronaldinho.

  • WHAT YAMAL SAID

Following his contract extension, Yamal boldly proclaimed: "Messi has made his path, I will make my own."

He added: "Messi, [Diego] Maradona, and Ronaldinho are three football legends. They have been three incredible players, Messi still is. I’ll try to follow that legacy."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Yamal, who is already among the favourites to win this year's Ballon d'Or despite only just turning 18, has already been anointed the heir apparent to the great Messi after a stunning season in 2024-25. The teenager helped Barca win La Liga and the Copa del Rey, and it seems there is a lot more to come from the winger. To be given a shirt worn by some legendary figures at the club shows how important he is to the Blaugrana already. That is highlighted by reports that he will earn a whopping £325,000 a week, which equates to €15 million (£12.5m/$17m) per season as a base salary, potentially rising to €20m (£17m/$23m) with bonuses.

They also finished last in the Marsh Cup.McSweeney replaces Travis Head as the state captain, although Jake Lehmann had been installed as captain for the 2023-24 season due to Head’s heavy international schedule.Ryan Harris, who will act as interim head coach following Jason Gillespie’s decision to stand down, said that McSweeney had all the qualities needed for the role.”McSweeney is a natural leader who inspires confidence in those around him,” Harris said. “He has a deep understanding of the game and a strong work ethic; both will be invaluable assets in his new role. TELL ME MORE

In a match that seemed more like Manchester than midsummer Chicago, Manchester United battled through rain and wind to beat Bournemouth 4-1 on Wednesday night, with Rasmus Hojlund and Patrick Dorgu starring in the pre-season win at Soldier Field.

Dorgu was impactful from the opening kick-off, starting at left wing back in a 3-4-2-1 formation, as the 20-year-old was pressing at every opportunity. He was almost immediately rewarded for his efforts as he lobbed a perfectly weighted cross that landed on Hojlund's head. The Danish striker easily converted, putting United ahead 1-0 in the eighth minute.

Dorgu was back for more in the 25th minute, as he took advantage of a pacey counterattack and eased by Julian Araujo in a one-on-one situation to score past Cherries goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, doubling the Red Devils' advantage. Bournemouth's best chance came in the latter part of the first half, as Antoine Semenyo cut through United defenders to score past 39-year-old Tom Heaton. Yet, the play was called off due to a very close offside.

What started as intermittent rainfall in the first half turned into a torrential downpour in the second. The weather might have factored into some of the openness of the second half. Amad Diallo took advantage of lax defending in the box to score with a side-footed shot, padding United's lead at 3-0.

Manchester-born Ethan Williams wrapped up the scoring for United in the 72nd minute with a brilliant strike to showcase his exciting potential. Bournemouth eventually notched a consolation effort when Matthijs de Ligt scored an own goal in injury time.

Bournemouth's Tyler Adams made his first appearance since the USMNT's 2-1 loss to Mexico in the Gold Cup final, joining in the 77th minute. The midfielder was serenaded with loud cheers when his name was announced in the stadium. But overall, this was a night when United easily ran proceedings.

Ruben Amorim, entering his first full season as United coach after joining midway through last campaign, will be encouraged by the dominance shown by his side. The Portuguese played most of his starters, outside of Harry Maguire, through 70 minutes, and they were effective in pressing, dominating possession, and were clinical on set pieces.

    THE MVP

Hojlund issued the perfect response to reports of Man Utd pushing to sign a new No.9 in the form of RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but fellow Denmark international Dorgu was the star of the show. The pacey full-back showed why he is potentially a strong fit under Amorim as he drove United forward at every opportunity. The 20-year-old, who had just one assist in 12 Premier League appearances last term, was confident throughout.

  • NEW FACES

If there was anything to nitpick, none of United's new signings featured. Mbeumo was deemed not ready to play, with Amorim hoping to give the former Brentford star a run in the club's final Summer Series game, while Cunha was handed a rest after showing positive glimpses in United's previous pre-season game against West Ham.

Cricket off the agenda as England head for Abu Dhabi break

“There will not be a whole lot of training,” says coach Brendon McCullum as players prepare for family reunions

Vithushan Ehantharajah06-Feb-20242:43

Harmison: England not guilty of ‘going too hard’

So, it’s back to the UAE England go, two Tests down and three to go.A peculiar 10-day gap in this schedule allows the team to retreat from the relentlessness of a five-match India series. Players’ families will be meeting them in Abu Dhabi, offering some comforts of home and an opportunity to shed the last couple of weeks. Not that there is much to shed, other than a virus that emerged on the morning of day four of the second Test in Visakhapatnam. A few more squad members were taken down on Tuesday, with a handful of others choosing to kick around in their rooms to preserve their clean bill of health ahead of family reunions.Honours are even in the series, which feels about right. India’s victory on Monday came with encouragement for England that they can do something worthwhile, just as the tourists’ success in Hyderabad contained moments showcasing India’s dominance at home.Related

Bumrah and Ashwin beat England's bazballers as India draw level

Bumrah: 'The yorker is probably the first delivery I learned'

Bazball wrote a cheque batters couldn't cash

But cricket will not be on the agenda in Abu Dhabi this time. This is a far different “camp” to the one ahead of the tour. In fact, it is probably similar to the trip some observers thought they were taking at the start of January. They will return on February 12, touching down in Rajkot in the evening ahead of two training days leading into the third Test.”There will not be a whole lot of training,” said Brendon McCullum of the mini-break. “The boys have worked incredibly hard in Abu Dhabi keeping in mind they all came here with a lot of cricket under their belts as well.”We have had plenty of training days, two varying Test matches, and this is an opportunity to step away from the heat of the battle. I was talking to Rahul Dravid (India head coach) and he mentioned all his boys are shooting home as well. Home for us is a little way away, so we chose Abu Dhabi, and we are going to enjoy the families. Then when we get to Rajkot, we drop the shoulder and go hard.”We sit 1-1 which is a fair reflection that we’re in the contest. We’ve played some really good cricket over the last two Test matches. Yes, we have come out on the wrong side of it here, but we got it across the line in the first one. The conviction about how we go about it is as strong as it ever has been. We have done some really good things over the last couple of weeks.”England will spend much of the 10-day break between Tests relaxing with family•PA Images via Getty ImagesShutting off in this gap is one of the Test coach’s few non-negotiables. But even going into this prescribed unwinding, some necessary untangling of a couple of issues will be in the back of some minds. One is a universal problem for anyone facing India – Jasprit Bumrah. Even 15 wickets at 10.16 does not do justice to some of the spells and dismissals within those spells he has already produced in just eight days of cricket. Bumrah has cycled through his bag of tricks to make batters look foolish, give Mark Wood a complex in the first Test about not matching his impact as the key fast bowler, and eclipse James Anderson’s class with a match-deciding 9 for 91 in the second. The red zones as far as threats to England’s batters tend to be from around the 20 to 40-over mark in their innings when the ball starts reversing, and Bumrah really comes to the party. They got away with a double hit in the second innings at Hyderabad thanks to Ollie Pope but were stung badly in Vizag – the guts ripped out in their first go before timely blows in pursuit of 399 gave India a satisfying kill. How do you combat Bumrah? Scientists could be given a lifetime and come up with little beyond standing at the other end. McCullum offered a shrugged, “Dunno”.Jasprit Bumrah has caused England plenty of bother•BCCI”We don’t really do theories. It is about making sure the guys are totally clear and present, confident and have conviction in their method. They are a lot better than I ever was and they will work it out how best to go about it.”There are contrasting ways of going about it, and I have always said it is important to bounce off whoever you are batting with and the contrasting skills you possess. We will see where we get to. For now, we have to tip our cap to Jasprit and say that spell (in the first innings of the second Test) was as good as anything we have seen so far on this trip.”It’s all condition-dependent. When the ball is swinging like that he becomes even more of a threat. He is a fantastic bowler in all forms of the game. He is unique with his release points and with how much swing he can generate in the air. No doubt he is very good, but we have come up against very good bowlers all through the last 18 months or so and found ways to counter them and that is what we have got to do in this one.”One player who has had a few years trying to counter Bumrah has been Joe Root. Two out of Root’s four wickets have gone to a familiar foe, taking the overall count between the two to eight – three more than any other bowler has managed. Are we in bunny territory? Great bowlers bowl at great batters, and these two have played each other 12 times. But Root’s average against his stuttering, thunderbolt-wielding nemesis is down to 30.62, which suggests the bowler’s had it most his own way.On the subject of averages, Root’s overall figure has dipped back below 50, to 49.64. The result of four patchy innings, the worst of which came on Monday. England’s anchor in Bazball chases came and went for a chaotic 16 off 10 deliveries – caught at point hacking across the line – leaving him with just 52 runs from four innings. A far cry from the bumper 368 here in 2021.Joe Root was caught slogging•BCCIThe average since the start of last summer is 40, a figure bolstered by 118 not out in the Ashes opener at Edgbaston. The 12 innings since have featured just two half-centuries (albeit an 84 and 91), and a tough 50-over World Cup campaign. All of which means this un-Root-like confusion is a little more in the spotlight. He has previously overcome a period of uncertainty in the middle of Ben Stokes’ first year as captain. The switch to new conditions seemingly means another recalibration is required. Particularly as his bowling is pulling him another way, with 69 overs bowled already, for five wickets, four of which came in a bunch in Hyderabad. It’s worth noting Root was batting with a damaged right little finger last time out, and was also one of the XI who awoke that morning afflicted by the virus. Naturally, McCullum has pencilled him in for a bumper back three.”He’s a world-class player and as good as any player England has ever seen. His method (in the final innings of the second Test), whilst people will look to the dismissal, look at the method of his option and he was trying to get the field back so he could milk them.”It is the bravery you have to take at times, and sometimes you get out doing it, but that’s just the way the game rolls. There is no doubt from our point of view in that approach.”There are three Tests left, still an opportunity to score a whole s***-ton of runs.”

Western Australia trounce Queensland to close in on final berth

Rocchiccioli and Gannon ensured Queensland couldn’t hang on for a draw as WA moved up to second on the table

Defending champions Western Australia lifted to second on the ladder with one round of the Sheffield Shield remaining after a pivotal 146-run victory over Queensland at the WACA.After having Queensland 81 for 4 early on day four, WA were made to work with Jack Wildermuth and Ben McDermott notching half-centuries before wrapping up the win early in the final session.Offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli and quick Cameron Gannon combined for seven wickets in what was almost certainly the last day of cricket played on the WACA this season.WA jumped past Victoria, who fell to third on the standings after losing to Tasmania in a thriller in a result that has the Tigers firmly in the box seat to host the Shield final starting on March 21.It means WA and Victoria will fight for a spot in the final when they square off in what is effectively a semi-final starting on March 11 at the Junction Oval.WA may tweak their line-up with allrounder Aaron Hardie in with a chance to return from a calf injury that ruled him out of the T20I series against New Zealand, although he could be picked as a specialist batter.Experienced left-arm quick Joel Paris might be rested, given his injury issues over the years, which may open the door for spinning allrounder Ashton Agar to play his first Shield match of the season.Agar has been unable to force his way into the side with Rocchiccioli having excelled in recent years, but WA will likely ponder playing two spinners in their frontline attack. Agar and Rocchiccioli have never played with one another for WA, but are club cricket teammates and close friends.”I hope so,” Rocchiccioli said when asked about the prospect of Agar playing against Victoria. “I hope me and Ash can spin a web and that would be a lot of fun. We’ve got a good connection and we’re always talking offspin.”I’m just really excited to hopefully get the chance to play a first-class match with him.”Queensland, who were out of final’s calculations, resumed at 56 for 1 and hopeful of being able to bat through for a draw after Angus Lovell and Jack Clayton impressively dug in late on day three as the surface appeared to not have any demons. But they were confronted by overcast and humid conditions as Paris and Gannon menaced to crush Queensland’s hopes quickly. Lovell and Clayton both fell within the opening 15 minutes of a prolonged opening session with Max Bryant succumbing lbw shortly after to a Gannon yorker in a decision he wasn’t pleased with.Continuing his terrific season, Paris threatened on almost every delivery with prodigious swing as he bowled mostly around the wicket to the right-handed batters. He also surprised with the occasional rearing short-pitched delivery and struck McDermott on the body. The towering Gannon, who holds an American passport and plays in Major League Cricket, has continued to be a reliable option for WA when given an opportunity. He used his height to devastating effect as it appeared Queensland might not make it through the session. An early finish was on the cards when captain Jimmy Peirson was bowled by Rocchiccioli, but McDermott and Wildermuth held firm as the sun emerged.McDermott was in aggressive form and used his feet superbly to club Rocchiccioli down the ground for six and into the construction site amid the ground’s redevelopment. It caused a brief stoppage, but when play resumed McDermott seemed unruffled by Queensland’s predicament until he nicked off a gem of a delivery by seamer Charlie Stobo early in the second session. But Queensland again didn’t roll over as Wildermuth and Xavier Bartlett combined for a half-century partnership to frustrate WA. Bartlett fell, but the pitch seemed to be flattening under the sun with Wildermuth relishing counterattacking the second new ball. His rearguard knock ended on 91 when he edged Rocchiccioli to slip on the stroke of tea to effectively end Queensland’s resistance. It was the final day of Australian cricket for retiring umpires Paul Wilson and Bruce Oxenford, who received a guard of honour from the teams and a strong ovation from the sprinkling of fans before play.
