Jonathan Trott: Afghanistan batters have adapted to pace of ODIs

Soaking up pressure and adapting their T20 skills to the pace of ODIs are the reasons for Afghanistan’s batting success at the World Cup, according to their head coach Jonathan Trott ahead of a crucial game against Netherlands in Lucknow.Coming into the tournament, Afghanistan’s middle order had the lowest average of all Full Member nations in ODIs since the start of 2021 – 26.44. That number has gone up to 36.93 in the World Cup, the fifth best in the tournament.Related

  • Afghanistan turn to careful cricket for unprecedented success

“I think it’s a case more of just being better all-around, and thinking more about your all-around game,” Trott said in Lucknow on Friday. “Afghanistan [players] naturally grow up playing a lot more T20 cricket than any other format, so the skills for T20 are there. It’s about adding to that sort of base of T20 skills. As you see, 50-over cricket is a long time and you have to be able to, I think, ride the sort of ebbs, and flows of a game.”While openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran have been scoring consistently, it hasn’t gone bust when they have not fired. In their previous game against Sri Lanka, Gurbaz fell for a four-ball duck but Rahmat Shah stepped up and had half-century stands with Ibrahim and Hashmatullah Shahidi, who in turn put on 111 with Azmatullah Omarzai to finish the chase.”The thing I’m really happy about from the last game is we lost a wicket in the first over and Rahmat Shah was able to go into No. 3 and soak up that pressure but still kept scoring at a good tempo,” Trott said. “That shows the ability to soak up pressure at times, what you have to do in 50-over cricket, but also then accelerate at certain times.”Rahmat Shah has been unfazed even when Afghanistan have lost an early wicket•AFP/Getty Images

Trott also stressed on the importance of the batters who are in to stay till the end and finish the job, especially while chasing.”I think when chasing those targets, we saw just what is possible if you have a good solid start and you have batsmen in the last ten overs,” he said. “That’s happened for us, but it’s also happened against us in games where it’s been difficult to stop the opposition with set batters in the last ten overs.”Having that sort of vision, knowing that you can score quickly towards the back end of games, I think that’s the pennies we’re starting to see drop with the players.”Afghanistan have managed to walk the talk, especially in their previous two games, against Pakistan and Sri Lanka where they chased down targets of 283 and 242 with ease.”Obviously, there’s a difference between talking about it and actually going out and doing it. And we’re seeing players go out and do it now,” Trott said. “We’ve spoken a lot about it and worked really hard to try and achieve it, so it’s nice to see the players do well and have a smile on the face when they’re there batting at the end of the game, having chased in the last two games and won.”

Donnarumma collided with the Bayern Munich star during their Club World Cup quarter-final, with Musiala needing to be stretchered off. He was diagnosed with a fractured left fibula and a broken and dislocated ankle and will be ruled out for several months. In an interview with , Donnarumma expressed regret, stating: “I’m very shocked by what happened, I really didn’t intend to hurt Musiala.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The collision triggered criticism from Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who questioned Donnarumma’s post-match conduct. Donnarumma appeared visibly shaken after the collision and his agent, Vincenzo Raiola, explained that the goalkeeper asked if he should visit him in hospital, but decided to send a message instead.

  • WHAT RAIOLA SAID

The agent said: "He didn’t want to pretend nothing had happened. Gigio is a very sensitive boy. He wouldn’t have been able to stand the scene and preferred to walk away to let the doctors take care of Musiala as best he could. Once in the locker room he even turned on his phone. In all the years we’ve worked together he’s never done that. Usually he turns it off an hour before kick-off to concentrate on the match and turns it back on after the game. This time he sent me a message to tell me he was shaken and that he hadn’t done it on purpose. He was very worried and saddened.

"In reality, I understand Neuer. As [Thibaut] Courtois says, it's normal for him to defend his team-mate. And he's also right when he says that you can behave differently. It's true but we are all different and everyone behaves as they can. It was an episode of play in the eternal duel between goalkeepers and forwards. In December, Gigio almost lost an eye in a clash with a Monaco player. And Neuer also punched Gonzalo Higuain in 2014, in a match between national teams. Then he apologised even if he admitted that he wanted to avert a danger for his team, knowing that he risked hurting the opponent."

WHAT NEXT FOR PSG & BAYERN?

Donnarumma is expected to remain PSG’s first-choice goalkeeper for their Club World Cup semi-final against Real Madrid. Musiala has undergone surgery and will begin a long rehabilitation process.

Patterson powers Strikers past Renegades and to the top of the table

The 96-run stand between Jess Duffin and Harmanpreet Kaur went in vain for Renegades, who remain stuck at the bottom of the pile

Tristan Lavalette08-Nov-2023Late hitting from Bridget Patterson powered defending champions Adelaide Strikers past struggling Melbourne Renegades at Karen Rolton Oval in their WBBL fixture on Wednesday.Despite a gulf between the teams on the ladder, Strikers were made to work and the target of 149 was not easy on a tricky surface. But Patterson was superb at the death, finishing unbeaten on 36 from 26 balls as Strikers claimed victory with an over to spare.Renegades’ total had been built around a 96-run fourth-wicket partnership between Harmanpreet Kaur and Jess Duffin after they had slumped at 41 for 3.After that, Renegades needed early wickets under lights, but were thwarted by aggressive opener Katie Mack in the powerplay. She used her feet to great effect against offspinner Hayley Mathews and capitalised on wayward short bowling from 16-year-old quick Sara Kennedy.Bowling at speeds close to 120kph, Kennedy has impressed in her debut season but struggled for rhythm, and conceded 15 runs in the third over amid Mack’s flier.Mack had the boundary in her sights on almost every delivery before holing out to Matthews after scoring 24.Captain Tahlia McGrath became the second Strikers batter to pass 2000 WBBL runs and was untroubled along with Laura Wolvaardt. They were in cruise control at the halfway mark before both fell after the drinks break to seamer Georgia Prestwidge.Danielle Gibson, the hero in their thrilling chase against Perth Scorchers, was set to again lead Strikers over the line before falling to Kennedy with 26 runs still needed. But Patterson calmly stepped up as Strikers moved back to the top of the ladder.Jess Duffin’s half-century helped Melbourne Renegades get to a competitive total•Getty ImagesRenegades’ finals hopes, however, appear forlorn after losing their sixth straight game.Propping the ladder, Renegades were major underdogs but their only victory of the season had been against Strikers, who they had routed for 86 at the Junction Oval. After electing to bat on a lively surface, Renegades desperately needed Matthews to find form after she had scored just 99 runs from seven innings. She didn’t face up immediately with Tammy Beaumont smashing a first-ball boundary from offspinner Georgia Adams and added another lusty blow three balls later. But on the last ball of the over, when she finally went on strike, Matthews was cramped for room attempting a cut shot to be caught behind for a golden duck. It was the second time this season Matthews had fallen to Adams and the fourth time she has failed to reach double-figures.Renegades’ top-order woes continued when a frustrated Courtney Webb was stumped after being lured out of her crease by a looping delivery from legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington that spun sharply off the pitch.Beaumont, who had been reprieved on 12 when legspinner Anesu Mushangwe dropped a tough return catch, was bowled by Gibson as Renegades stared down the barrel. In a familiar tale, the pressure was on Harmanpreet, who again dug Renegades out of trouble. She targeted Wellington down the ground and also played with trademark inventiveness, including several well-executed scoops, as she mastered the two-paced surface.Duffin provided strong support and after a slow start she overtook Harmanpreet with a slew of belligerent strokes. Both batters fell at the death with Harmanpreet brilliantly caught by McGrath low to her left at cover.Mushangwe deservedly picked up the wicket of Duffin to finish with 1 for 18 off four overs in a disciplined performance that the Renegades bowlers were unable to replicate later in the night.

Per journalist Ciro Venerato via CalcioNapoli24, Leeds have entered the race to sign goalkeeper Milinkovic-Savic from Torino this summer. The stopper is also wanted by the club's Serie A rivals Napoli, and Manchester United were credited with an interest earlier this summer, as they continue to hunt for a replacement for Andre Onana.

Milinkovic-Savic is a Serbia international with 19 caps, and has a release clause worth €21m for foreign clubs, and €19m (£16m/$22m) for clubs in Serie A. Daniel Farke's side are said to have made an enquiry as they attempt to gauge the possibility of a deal, ahead of their return to Premier League football.

DID YOU KNOW?

Milinkovic-Savic may have fallen off of the Red Devils' radar somewhat, as they have instead been linked with Botafogo goalkeeper John in recent weeks. That may give Leeds an advantage, but it could be a disappointment to the Serbia star, as he was on the books at Old Trafford as a youngster, although he never played for the first-team.

SLC secretary resigns after Sri Lanka's World Cup exit and board criticism

Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva resigned from his board position on Saturday. His resignation comes after both widespread criticism of the board following Sri Lanka’s crashing out of the Men’s ODI World Cup, as well as a release from the nation’s sports minister asking SLC’s executive committee to resign or face drastic action.De Silva did not provide an official reason for his resignation, but it is understood to be at least partly the consequence of Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the World Cup, though personal reasons had also played a part.Sri Lanka’s sports minister and SLC have been engaged in hostilities lasting over a year, with the board’s use of finances (particularly during last year’s Men’s T20 World Cup), the Lanka Premier League, and their running of other domestic tournaments being particular flashpoints.Related

  • SLC wants answers for Sri Lanka's 'shocking defeats' in World Cup

SLC’s relationship with the sports minister often tends to be friendly, although it is occasionally characterised by sabre-rattling. According to Sri Lanka’s sports law, the nation’s sports ministry oversees SLC, as it does other national-level sporting bodies. However, in the case of cricket, the ICC’s official policy of not allowing direct government interference in the sport has usually prevented ministers from flexing their power. The last time the government installed an “interim committee” to act in place of SLC’s member-voted executive committee, back in 2014, the ICC held funds that were due to be paid to the board in escrow. In any case, the minister’s two-page release accused SLC of – among a variety of faults – failing to provide so much as an indoor training facility, or a swimming pool in which to conduct fitness and injury rehabilitation work. These, at least, have been long-standing grouses from players themselves.SLC’s officials have responded to the minister’s criticism with strongly-worded statements of their own over the past few months. But the men’s team’s performance at the World Cup has shifted the power dynamic, however briefly.

Healy confirms 'gory' dog bite accident; hopeful of full recovery

The wicketkeeper-batter will have a clearer indication of her route back after another meeting with the surgeon later this week

Andrew McGlashan23-Oct-2023Alyssa Healy has confirmed that she suffered a severe dog bite to her right index finger on Saturday night, and admitted that in the immediate aftermath of the accident she feared for her career, but is hopeful she will be able to make a full recovery although the timeline of that remains uncertain.Healy was trying to separate her two Staffordshire bull terriers puppies, Misty and Millie, when she suffered the injury which has now put her in doubt for the rest of the WBBL for Sydney Sixers and potentially Australia’s tour to India in December. She had surgery on Sunday morning and will have a clearer indication of the recovery time after another meeting with the surgeon on Thursday.”I’ve got two puppy dogs who were having a rough and tumble, it got a little more than that and unfortunately got my hand in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Healy said. “My right index finger took a bit of a battering. It was quite gory…the positive side of it is that the surgery all went well.”Related

Grace Harris and her broken bat thrashes new WBBL record 136 not out

The initial indications are that there was no bone or tendon damage which would have been more of a concern. “That’s probably the best news possible,” she said. “There was an artery involved which probably made it look more like a crime scene than it needed to be, but the major important things that will take time in coming back weren’t affected.”Won’t lie, when I pulled my finger out initially, I thought I was in strife, but it’s all gone smoothly at the moment. Think it will all just come down to function and whether I can continue to grip the bat the way I need to, or catch the ball, but from all reports, which is really early, is that it’s all pretty positive.”Healy added that after the initial shock of the incident she was now feeling more positive about the prognosis.”I’m not too bad about it,” she said. “These things happen. Dane van Niekerk cut herself cutting an avocado with the Sixers, so we haven’t had much luck with household accidents for the Sixers. I’m really optimistic about it. I’ll take the opportunity to have a rest while I can. It’s not ideal and I was looking forward to the WBBL and contributing significantly for the Sixers. I’ve been given a break now to do that to support them and get myself right, whether it’s for the back end of the season or a big summer ahead.”

Speaking after Sixers’ defeat to Sydney Thunder on Sunday, captain Ellyse Perry acknowledged the impact of Healy’s injury.”It’s a huge blow,” she said. “It’s not just a blow for us, it’s a blow for the tournament, because she’s one of the most exciting and mercurial players in the world.”It’s been wonderful to have her playing in the competition over the last nine years. Whenever a player like that’s missing for a period of time, it’s going to be a blow.”For our group, she’s a huge presence. She’s fun, she’s a big character, and the lifeblood of the team. For however long we miss her for, it’s going to be a bummer. We’re just thinking of her and hope she gets better soon.”Depending on the timeline for Healy’s recovery, it could create the need for a new Australia captain if she is unavailable for the multiformat India tour in December. Meg Lanning has yet to confirm if she will be available for the trip and Healy has been her understudy this year. If both Lanning and Healy were unavailable, Tahlia McGrath would be a frontrunner to take the role given she has twice captained Australia in India and Ireland.Sixers have not yet replaced Healy in their WBBL squad with a decision on that likely to be taken once her recovery timeline is confirmed later this week.
