'I've taken a leaf out of Gayle's book' – Rohit after breaking WI opener's record for most sixes

“When I started playing this game, I never thought I would be able to hit sixes like that, let alone that many sixes”

Rohit Sharma broke records aplenty during his 84-ball 131 against Afghanistan on Wednesday, one of them being surpassing Chris Gayle for the most sixes in international cricket. The India captain began his innings on 551 sixes, two behind Gayle. He claimed the record just 31 balls into his innings with his signature front-foot pull off Naveen-ul-Haq. Speaking to after India’s eight-wicket win, Rohit said that he had taken inspiration from Gayle himself during his six-hitting journey.”Universe Boss is Universe Boss,” he said. “I have taken a leaf out of his book. Over the years, we have seen him, such a six-hitting machine he is wherever he plays.”We both wear the same jersey – No. 45. I am sure he is happy about it because jersey No. 45 has done it [broken his record].”Gayle congratulated Rohit on Twitter, to which the India captain also replied in his own quirky manner.

Rohit took 453 games to break the record, 30 fewer than Gayle, who had 553 sixes in 483 international matches. Rohit, however, said that he was as surprised as any to stand atop the sixes list.”When I started playing this game, I never thought I would be able to hit sixes like that, let alone that many sixes. Obviously, a lot of work has gone into it over the years. So I am quite happy with the work I have.Related

“I am the sort of person who will not be satisfied. I want to continue to do what I have been doing. My focus is on that. Yeah, it is a small happy moment for me.”India have had a rollicking start to their World Cup campaign with two wins out of two and are currently second on the points table, behind New Zealand. Rohit, however, was quick to point out that it was important to look at every game as it came, and not think too far ahead.”It is a very different format that we play now, the World Cup – nine league games and then the semi-finals and final. We played a brilliant game today, the bowlers did an exceptional job to restrict them under 280 because the wicket was good to bat on.”For us what was important was to look at every game that came our way and not to look too far ahead.”

Nottinghamshire sign Asitha Fernando for final weeks of season

Fernando’s namesake and national team-mate Vishwa joins Durham

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Sep-2023Asitha Fernando, the Sri Lanka fast bowler, has signed to play for Nottinghamshire in the final three rounds of the County Championship.Fernando, 26, has taken 35 wickets in 12 Tests at an average of 28.97 and is set for his first spell in county cricket, bolstering Notts seam-bowling options for the last few weeks of the season.”Asitha has already shown his talent on the international stage, and we believe he has the skillset needed to be successful in English conditions,” Notts head coach, Peter Moores, said. “We’re excited to have him with us, and he will add much needed depth to our bowling resources until the end of the season.”We’ve had some misfortune with injuries and we’re still in the situation of not having our full complement of seamers available. This has meant greater workloads for a smaller number of bowlers, and Asitha can help ease that pressure over the course of our run-in.”The whole group recognises the importance of these last three games and the need for everyone to step up, so we can finish the season strongly. Having had a bye in the first round of games, we’ve had an extended build up to prepare ourselves for the challenge ahead, which we’re all looking forward to.”His namesake and national team-mate, Vishwa Fernando, has signed for Durham as they look to wrap up the Division Two title, with Matt Potts and Brydon Carse on England ODI duty during the final weeks of the season.”I am really looking forward to joining Durham,” Fernando said. “I very much excited to play in the County Championship in England. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.”Marcus North, Durham’s director of cricket, said: “He is a vastly experienced player who has succeeded in Test and first-class cricket and we look forward to seeing what he can bring to Durham in September.”Elsewhere, Hampshire seamer Scott Currie has joined Leicestershire on loan for their last three games, as the Midlands club continue a surprise push for promotion from Division Two.

Jhye Richardson returns with a bang as WA crush Victoria

Jhye Richardson made a successful return from injury as Western Australia crushed Victoria by six wickets in their Marsh Cup match at the WACA Ground.Player of the match Jason Behrendorff snared 3 for 14 off five overs on Monday and Richardson chipped in with 2 for 36 as Victoria were skittled for 107 in 21.1 overs. In reply, WA raced to victory with a whopping 158 balls to spare, giving them a bonus point and a perfect 3-0 start to their title defence. The Marsh Cup ladder-leaders have now won 12 straight matches in the 50-over competition and again loom as the team to beat having won the last two titles convincingly and three of the last four overall.Sam Whiteman (38 not out off 51 balls) and D’Arcy Short (39 off 39) made light work of the run chase in an easy win for the hosts.WA captain Ashton Turner’s decision to bowl first proved a masterstroke as Victoria crashed to 22 for 3. Richardson, playing for the first time since hamstring surgery last summer, got the ball rolling with the early scalps of Sam Harper and Campbell Kellaway. But it was Behrendorff’s spell that truly ripped the heart out of Victoria’s batting line-up. Behrendorff trapped opener Tom Rogers lbw before having Jonathan Merlo caught at gully. The 33-year-old then produced the ball of the innings to knock over Peter Handscomb for 7. Handscomb simply had no answer as Behrendorff’s delivery swung back sharply to crash into the top of leg stump, leaving Victoria reeling at 45 for 5.Jason Behrendorff took 3 for 14•Getty Images

AJ Tye and Lance Morris joined in on the fun to leave Victoria at 62 for 8 and in danger of not passing their lowest score in the competition, 65 against Queensland in 2003.Tailenders Fergus O’Neill and Todd Murphy ensured Victoria avoided a new nadir. O’Neill top scored for the innings with 22 while Murphy scored 20 all in boundaries but the total was never going to be enough against a stacked WA line-up.Victoria’s insipid display came just a day after Jake Fraser-McGurk, who moved from Victoria to South Australia for greater opportunities, scored a 29-ball century for the Redbacks in their loss to Tasmania. Fraser-McGurk’s final score of 125 off 38 balls comfortably eclipsed Victoria’s team total on Monday. The heavy defeat capped a bad few days for Victoria, who lost to WA by an innings and 53 runs in the Sheffield Shield on Saturday.Richardson, who has been plagued by shoulder and soft tissue injuries in recent years, is aiming to produce a strong summer in order to work his way back into the international arena. His performance on Monday was an important first step, though it remains to be seen when WA will unleash him in red-ball cricket.

Chelsea were recently urged by Khan to get in contact with his office to hold talks over their new stadium project. Now, report conversations have taken place between the two parties as they decide whether to redevelop current home Stamford Bridge or leave to build a new ground at Earl's Court.

Chelsea are one of the biggest teams in the Premier League but Stamford Bridge currently holds only 40,341 supporters. Khan himself said the Blues have outgrown their current stadium, having won five Premier League titles alongside two Champions Leagues, and talks are still ongoing to decide where the best possible site would be.

WHAT KHAN SAID

While Chelsea declined to give an update of their own on talks with the mayor's office, a spokesperson for Khan said: "The mayor works closely with all Premier League football clubs in London across a variety of matters.

"The mayor is unaware of any recent formal proposals from the club for the Earl’s Court site. The mayor and TfL can only form a view once they have seen the details of any potential proposals."

'Refreshed and ready' – Malik Tillman's supercharged rise, Patrick Agyemang's finishing touch: Five keys for USMNT's Gold Cup quarterfinal against Costa Rica

The U.S. are three wins away from something they have done seven times, but not since 2021 – win the Gold Cup

The U.S. men's national team won their Gold Cup group. Their reward? A meeting with some old friends. Miguel Herrera is one. So, too, is the team he coaches, Costa Rica. There's history here and plenty of it.

The history has been kind to the USMNT in this particular scenario. This will be the eighth Gold Cup meeting between the two teams. The U.S. haven't lost a single one. Moreover, the U.S. have never lost in the quarterfinal round of this tournament. This Costa Rica team, meanwhile, isn't a vintage Costa Rica team – it's in the midst of a rebuild, with several members of the old guard still hanging on.

Of course, given the absences of Christian Pulisic, Antonee Robinson, Weston McKennie and a virtual starting lineup of others, this isn't a vintage USMNT group, either – as has been the talking point all summer. The group that is here, though, has taken care of business, defeating Trinidad & Tobago, Saudi Arabia and Haiti to top their group. The first of those wins was comprehensive. The second two? Less so. Mauricio Pochettino has plenty to build on, but also plenty of decisions to make following the group stage.

Now it gets serious, with the USMNT three wins away from accomplishing something they have done seven times, but not since 2021 – win the Gold Cup. And that starts against Costa Rica on Sunday, with kickoff at 7 p.m. ET in Minneapolis. A spot in the semifinals is on the line. The rewards and the pressure are only increasing.

GOAL looks at five keys for the USMNT against Costa Rica.

    The USMNT's top star

Heading into the summer, Malik Tillman was under pressure. He had yet to really take off in a USMNT shirt, so, despite his Eredivisie heroics, there was a real need to prove he can do things on the international level.

Consider things proven. In five games played this summer, Tillman has three goals and an assist, with all three scores coming in the Gold Cup group stage. Tillman has stepped up as this Gold Cup team's playmaker, making himself the focal point of the attack as the primary creative hub. He's finished in a variety of ways, too, using both his head and his feet to change games.

"Oof," Pochettino said of Tillman. "It's so difficult to define him because what a player he is. What a player."

The U.S. will need that player through these knockout stages. Tillman is so dynamic, so decisive, in big moments, and he's shown now that he can do that with the USMNT. Of course, the challenges will get harder as the opponents improve, but Tillman has every reason to feel confident as he looks to lead this team into the knockout rounds.

"He is showing in this camp his talent and capacity because he is this type of player with the talent to show this every single game," Pochettino said. "Then, the capacity without the ball, the work ethic in the way that he is really aggressive. He will cover a lot of the pitch. He's always trying to help the team press, chasing back, and playing different positions. He can appear like a No. 10 in training, but he can be between the lines, on the left or right side, dropping in as a No. 8 or a No. 6.

"I see such a talented player, and I'm so pleased with him because he's such a lovely guy."

    Patrick Agyemang vs Keylor Navas

On one side is arguably the most legendary goalkeeper in North America history. On the other side, a striker who made his international debut in January. This is the key, though, despite the vastly different levels of experience.

For Costa Rica to have a chance, the legendary Keylor Navas will have to stand on his head. He nearly did enough against Mexico, but Los Ticos inability to score on the other side prevented them from winning the group. Still, let that serve as an example of the type of impact Navas can make by making the two or three saves that keep a team in the game.

"Navas is one of the best goalkeepers in CONCACAF history," said his American goalkeeper counterpart Matt Freese, "but when we step on the field, we're there to win. That's our mentality."

The man tasked with beating Navas? Patrick Agyemang, who has beaten five of the nine goalkeepers he's faced across his USMNT career so far. The Charlotte FC striker is a handful, but has been criticized recently for wasting more chances than he's taken. You can't afford to be wasteful against Navas, though. If you get a chance to beat him, you generally have to take it.

That applies to Agyemang and everyone else in the U.S. team. This is a legendary shot-stopper on the other side, so every chance means just a little bit more knowing that.

    Rested and relaxed?

For much of the last month, the USMNT have been hopping from one task to the next. Training camp in Chicago bled into friendlies in Connecticut in Nashville. The Gold Cup brought them to San Jose, Austin and Dallas. This week, given a full seven days between games, the U.S. finally got a chance to breathe.

It's not often you get that in a tournament and, given the schedule over the last three weeks or so, it was appreciated. Pochettino was able to generally stick with his go-to lineup for all three games of this window, largely because he knew physical recovery time was on the way. So, too, was a brief mental break, headlined by a key day off in Dallas before the U.S. travelled to Minneapolis for the quarterfinals.

"It's definitely been nice to have a break from the go, go, go," Max Arfsten said. "Thankfully, we got a day off [Tuesday], so just some time to decompress, relax, and spend time with people if you want to. I think, for us, it was a good break because now we're all refreshed and ready to get back."

Given the week in between games, everyone is available. Each of the 25 players in camp trained on Friday, which means Pochettino will have a full, rested roster at his disposal for Sunday's match.

    The left-back spot

Most of the spots on the pitch are accounted for. The centerpiece duo is set. Tyler Adams is back and ready to play. Agyemang is good to go up top, while Diego Luna should be ready and rested.

Left-back, though? There are some questions there. Pochettino has something to think about.

For each of the first two matches, Pochettino went with Max Arfsten. In the third, it was John Tolkin. Tolkin's assist against Haiti helped him make a pretty good case, but was it good enough to unseat Arfsten?

"There's a healthy competition between two players like Max and him," Pochettino said, "who are both young and have very good quality. They are different players, but they both bring a lot of quality to a team."

Arfsten is more of a wingback. Tolkin? More a fullback. Both can impact a game on the attacking side, though, and both could create problems for Costa Rica from that left side. Both also have points to prove ahead of the World Cup, and this game will be a pretty good proving ground for whoever Pochettino does opt to put into the starting XI.

Kohli describes occasion of his 50th ODI hundred as 'the perfect picture'

India batter becomes the first to score 50 ODI hundreds, and also breaks Tendulkar’s record for most runs in a World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Nov-2023

Virat Kohli’s 50th ODI hundred was his highest score in a knockout game of an ICC tournament•ICC/Getty Images

After becoming the first batter to score 50 ODI centuries, Virat Kohli described the moment as “the perfect picture,” for having achieved the record in a World Cup semi-final against New Zealand, in front of his wife Anushka Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar, the man whose record he broke. As he flicked Lockie Ferguson behind square in the 42nd over of India’s innings and completed the two that got him to his 50th hundred, Kohli celebrated with a leap and a punch in the air, before taking off his helmet, raising his arms and bowing towards the stands, where Tendulkar and Anushka stood applauding the achievement.”It’s stuff of dreams, Anushka was sitting right there, Sachin was there in the stands,” Kohli said while being interviewed during the innings break. “I mean, it’s very difficult for me to explain this, but if I could paint the perfect picture, I would want this to be the picture. My life partner, the person I love the most, she’s sitting there. My hero, he’s sitting there. And I was able to get the 50th in front of all of them and all these fans at Wankhede as well, such a historic venue. It was amazing.”Related

Crazy, stupid, love: a Tendulkar fan's complicated relationship with Kohli

While Tendulkar had scored his 49th hundred in his 451st ODI innings, Kohli had equalled that landmark in just 277 innings – against South Africa in India’s penultimate league game of this World Cup – and then broke the record in his 279th innings.”I said it in Kolkata, the great man (Sachin Tendulkar) just congratulated me, all this feels like a dream for me, honestly,” Kohli said. “It’s too good to be true, feels surreal, I never thought I’ll be here ever in my career. Just to help the team so many times, again, a big game today, I had to kind of play the role I’ve played throughout the tournament so that the guys around me can go and express themselves. Just glad that everything came together so nicely and we put up a great total on the board as well.”

But that wasn’t the only record of Tendulkar’s that Kohli broke during his historic hundred. He also went past Tendulkar for the most runs in a single edition of the ODI World Cup. Tendulkar had scored 673 runs in the 2003 World Cup; Kohli passed that tally when he scored his 80th run in Wednesday’s semi-final and went on to become the first batter to score 700 runs in a ODI World Cup. By the time Kohli was dismissed for 117 off 113 balls, he had 711 runs in the tournament at an average of 101.57 and strike rate of 90.68.The hundred was Kohli’s third of this World Cup to go with five half-centuries in ten matches. In the semi-final, he came into bat in the ninth over of India’s innings, with the score on 71 for 1, and put on 93 off 86 balls with Shubman Gill and 163 off 128 balls with Shreyas Iyer. Kohli brought up his half-century off 59 balls and then scored his next 50 runs off 53 deliveries, after seeming to suffer cramps while in his 90s. He played the anchoring role as India amassed 397 for 4, the highest total in a knockout game of a World Cup.”As I’ve said a lot of times before, the most important thing is to make my team win, and whatever it takes to do that, I’m ready to do that, whether it’s running singles and doubles, hitting boundaries, whatever the team wants me to do,” Kohli said. “I’ve been given a role this tournament, and I’m trying to play that to the best of my ability, trying to dig deep, bat long, so that the others can play around me and have that confidence that I’m going into the later overs where I can dominate with the bat as well. That’s the only key to consistency I guess, just playing according to the situation, playing for your team at all times.”

O Alviverde bateria 76 pontos, enquanto o Inter teria 60, chegando no máximo a 72.

Portanto, palmeirense, é seguir mantendo a cautela.

Confira os cenários citados acima:

33ª rodada, diante do Avaí, no Allianz Parque

35ª rodada, diante do Fortaleza, no Allianz Parque
