Jorthy Mokio: The Ajax wonderkid who rejected Barcelona to follow in footsteps of Matthijs de Ligt & Jorrel Hato

The Belgian ace only turned 17 in February, but is already making a name for himself at senior level with the four-time European champions

The Ajax academy, or 'De Toekomst' ('The Future') as it's commonly known in the Netherlands, has a proud history of producing some of the best players on the planet dating all the way back to its creation in 1900. From legends such as Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten, Ruud Krol, Frank Rijkaard and Dennis Bergkamp to modern-day stars like Christian Eriksen, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, Ajax have consistently seen their faith in homegrown talent rewarded en route to becoming the most successful club in Dutch football.

Those traditions are as strong today as ever, with Jorrel Hato the latest to be attracting attention from Europe's other elite clubs. Like De Ligt before him, Hato has defied his tender age to become a fixture in the Ajax defence, and it has been reported that Chelsea and Liverpool are both interested in bringing him to the Premier League after previous links to Arsenal.

Fortunately, Ajax are also adept at identifying generational talents from abroad, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Jari Litmanen, Luis Suarez and Dusan Tadic just a few of those who have joined the club's Hall of Fame down the years. As such, they already have a suitable replacement lined up if Hato does depart, in the form of 17-year-old Jorthy Mokio. In his first full season at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, records have tumbled around Mokio as he's quickly outgrown the reserves to force his way into the Ajax starting XI earn a spot in the Belgium national team.

It's clear that Ajax have unearthed another gem with the potential to emulate the icons of the past. The question is: how has Mokio risen to the top level so quickly? GOAL takes a look below…

AFPWhere it all began

Mokio was born in the city of Ghent in northwest Belgium to Congolese parents, the middle child in the family alongside three sisters and two brothers. His mother noticed that he had a natural inclination for football from an extremely young age, as Mokio revealed in an interview with in February: "According to her, I could barely walk when I was already kicking everything."

Later transitioning from household items to a ball, Mokio got used to playing football on asphalt instead of grass, learning invaluable technical skills while also developing a hard edge. "Street football teaches you a lot. You practice your technique, dish out and take," he added. "Sometimes you shout at your friend or opponent or get into a fight. In any case, you always give 100 percent. That is the basis. I was playing against older boys early on."

Mokio also said he "imagined myself as Yaya Toure" after settling on No.10 as his favourite position, which is where he would go on to play for amateur side KFC Merelbeke. However, when he was 12, Mokio was offered an internship at Gent, who saw him as more of a defender than an attacker and worked towards developing that side of his game.

It proved to be a shrewd call as Mokio made history for the club in October 2023. He became the youngest Gent player to ever feature in the UEFA Youth League when making his debut against Basel, and the following March, he made his senior bow at 16 years and 29 days old in a 5-1 Belgian Pro League win over Standard Liege, the first of four first-team appearances he would make towards the end of the campaign.

AdvertisementThe big break

By the summer of 2024, Mokio had already represented Belgium at Under-15, U16 and U17 levels, and top clubs across the continent were taking notice. Gent tried to renew Mokio's contract, but eventually resigned themselves to losing the youngster after approaches from Barcelona, Bayern Munich, PSV and Ajax.

All four clubs reportedly tabled bids for Mokio, and according to , Barcelona even sent their sporting director, Deco, to meet with his family and agent face to face. But in the end, Mokio decided to reject Barca in favour of a move to Ajax after being advised by his father.

“They told us that they were going to do as with Lamine Yamal or Pau Cubarsí," Thierry Mokio said in a subsequent sit-down with . “The pressure in Barca is from another dimension. If it doesn’t work, you end up in Osasuna, for example, and you’re lost. It seemed too big a step to me.”

On June 24, 2024, Mokio joined Ajax on a free transfer, committing to a three-year contract. It was a huge coup for the Dutch side to see off competition from Barca, and Mokio didn't have to wait long to make his first appearance for Francesco Farioli's senior squad.

Mokio came off the bench against Jagiellonia Białystok in a UEFA Europa League play-off clash at the end of August, becoming the youngest foreign player to ever line up for Ajax in the process. "At first, I was a little nervous, but it actually went quite well," Mokio said in a humble admission after the final whistle.

He had to keep a handle on his nerves again the following month, as he was called up for Belgium U21 duty for the first time. Mokio surprised himself again with an impressive performance in a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan and even marked the occasion with a goal, making him the second-youngest scorer for Belgium in U21 European Championship qualifying behind a certain Romelu Lukaku.

AFPHow it's going

Mokio would, however, only feature once more for the Ajax first team in 2024 as the decision was taken for him to build up experience in the reserves. It was a move that he embraced maturely, with the Belgian ace shining for Jong Ajax across 17 second-division appearances, chipping in with two goals while adding an another string to his bow by providing cover in defensive midfield.

When the new year rolled around, Mokio was ready to force his way back into Farioli's plans. The Ajax boss gave Mokio his Eredivisie debut as a starter away at Fortuna Sittard at the age of 16 years and 346, just three days older than Clarence Seedorf was when he became the club's youngest player in the competition way back in 1992.

Four days later, Mokio claimed another record outright, only this time it extended across the entire continent. With one perfectly judged swing of his right boot, Mokio scored a sensational volley from the edge of the box to wrap up a 2-0 win for Ajax in the first leg of their Europa League knockout stage play-off tie against Union Saint-Gilloise. It was a remarkable strike, and it made Mokio the youngest player to ever score in a Europa League knockout game. But his all-round performance was even more extraordinary, as Dutch journalist Mike Verweij observed in : "Mokio played along as if he had been in the Ajax first team for years and at one point was almost directing things in a Cruyffian way."

There is no higher praise than that for any Ajax player. Mokio certainly drew confidence from the widespread acclaim he drew that night, featuring in a further 12 games in all competitions before the end of the season as Ajax came agonisingly close to winning back the Eredivisie having reached the Europa League last 16.

Mokio was also included in Rudi Garcia's first Belgium squad in March, and got his first taste of senior international football when coming on for the final two minutes of a 2-1 Nations League play-off defeat to Ukraine. Garcia drafted Mokio back in for Belgium's first set of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June to complete what has been an extraordinary year for the former Gent prospect.

Biggest strengths

Mokio is a versatile player who can operate as both a full-back and a midfielder, but is naturally a left-sided centre-half best suited to a three-man defensive line. Standing at six foot tall, the teenager is more than able to hold his own physically at the top level, and he is extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet, always looking to break through the lines even when under intense pressure.

It doesn't matter where he is on the pitch, Mokio can put the ball on a sixpence and will bust a gut to contribute in the final third when the opportunity arises. The best example of that came in Ajax's 3-1 Eredivisie win against NAC on April 6, as Mokio pinged a perfect 40-yard cross-field pass to a team-mate from his own half, then proceeded to sprint all the way to the box to turn a low cross from Kenneth Taylor into the net.

There is scope for Mokio to evolve into a midfielder with those abilities, but it is in defence where he has the most potential. The 17-year-old is dominant in the air, rarely loses any duels and already reads the game very well, while his pace on the turn gives Ajax the option to play with a higher line. When you factor all of that in, it's not surprising that Barcelona were so eager to integrate him into Hansi Flick's system!

Lees picks up where former team-mate Lyth leaves off as Durham launch pursuit in earnest

Pair won two Championship titles together for Yorkshire in 2014-15 before Lees joined Durham

Former Yorkshire opening partners Adam Lyth and Alex Lees shone for their respective counties on day two of this LV= Insurance County Championship fixture at Scarborough as Durham responded in kind to the home side’s commanding first-innings 340 all out.Lyth made his way from 75 not out overnight to 111 off 188 balls before fellow left-hander Lees dominated after tea with 65 not out in Durham’s reply of 106 for 1 from 33 overs. The pair won two Championship titles together for Yorkshire in 2014 and 2015 before Lees fell out of form and left his home county for Durham to reignite his career in 2018.He has since played Test cricket for England and is currently on a run of four hundreds in his last five Championship innings. Number five could follow on day three.Lees, 30, is the only player to have topped 1,000 runs in either division of the Championship this season, while Lyth is now inside the top 10 scorers in Division Two with 757.Like Lees, Lyth is in fine form having scored back-to-back Championship centuries. He was the cornerstone of Yorkshire’s 340 and was supported in thrilling fashion by Jordan Thompson’s 54 off 52 balls, including four fours and as many sixes. As Yorkshire advanced from 142 for 2 overnight, new-ball pair Matthew Potts and Ben Raine finished with 4 for 111 and 4 for 93 respectively. Raine claimed three of his wickets on day two.Lyth just loves batting at North Marine Road. Having grown up in Whitby, he learnt his craft on this ground, playing for the juniors and the seniors. He last played league cricket for them 10 years ago this coming September. Such is his fondness for Scarborough that he once went to Perth in Western Australia to play a winter of grade cricket for a coastal club of the same name.Lyth drove particularly well, especially on day one, and brought up his century off 157 balls.Durham clearly had more success with the ball during day two, claiming eight wickets. But they will have been frustrated at dropping a couple of slip catches, and Yorkshire will have been delighted with their work having been inserted.Just when it looked like Durham had created an opening, the lower order frustrated them.Raine trapped Ryan Rickelton lbw as Yorkshire reached an early lunch on 211 for 3, with rain preventing play between 12.35pm and 2pm. He then had Lyth caught behind cutting before wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson also helped Potts remove Matthew Revis, but at the second attempt after steepling bounce. And when Jonny Tattersall dragged a pull at Bas de Leede onto his stumps, Yorkshire were 236 for 6 in the 69th over having lost three wickets for 24.But a trio of handy contributions, led by Thompson, helped Yorkshire reassert their authority as another 104 runs were added.Ben Coad made 19 and Matthew Fisher 24, ably supporting Thompson’s freewheeling innings. He crashed four leg-side sixes off de Leede and Raine, one of them going out of the ground into the gardens surrounding this venue.Thompson was the last wicket to fall, caught at long-leg on the stroke of tea pulling against Potts. In truth, neither bowling performance has been anything to write home about, and we could now be set for the first Championship draw played at Scarborough since June 2013.Lees is doing everything he can to add to the 10 Test Matches he played last year. He hit all of his first seven boundaries down the ground or through cover off front and back foot, added to a lofted straight six off Coad’s seamers.Having lost opening partner Michael Jones caught behind off Thompson, leaving the score at 42 for 1 in the 10th over, he went on to reach his latest fifty off 64 balls. He shared an unbroken 64 for the second-wicket with captain Scott Borthwick, who will begin day three unbeaten on 29.

Rain threatens to spoil Bumrah's long-awaited comeback

A yellow warning for rain in Dublin could dampen the spirits of India’s fringe players as they look to push their case for regular selection

‘No baggage or pressure of expectation’ for Bumrah on return

Big Picture – Will India hand Rinku a debut?
Think twice before you call it a low-key, out-of-place series. Jasprit Bumrah, returning to international cricket for the first time in 11 months, is the obvious headline-grabber, but this series will also give several India players the chance to push themselves into the reckoning for next year’s T20 World Cup. For Ireland, it will be a chance to gauge where they stand in the format and make use of the game-time before the big tournament.India will also want to start ironing out the issues that surfaced during their T20I series loss to West Indies. India coach Rahul Dravid had recognised batting depth as a challenge during that series, and India will need to identify a No. 8 in addition to back-ups for various other roles.Related

As for Bumrah’s return, several key questions remain: will he be able to bowl with the same consistency as before? He looked comfortable in the nets on Wednesday, in a sneak-peek video that included him bowling a toe-crusher and a searing bouncer, which are encouraging signs. Can he remain fit and injury-free for the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup? His last two attempted comebacks didn’t go too well for him, remember. And how will he fare as captain?Another positive for India heading into the series is Prasidh Krishna returning after a lengthy injury layoff. The series will also serve as an audition for IPL stars Jitesh Sharma and Rinku Singh, who could play key roles in India’s middle order. It’s also a chance for one of Shahbaz Ahmed, Washington Sundar and Shivam Dube to stake their claim for an allrounder slot. The hosts, meanwhile, are coming into the series having sealed their place in the 2024 T20 World Cup after finishing in the top two in the Europe Qualifier. They have run India close in the past, but haven’t managed a win in five meetings so far. Ackermann, Hill combine to keep Leicestershire promotion hopes alive

Leicestershire kept themselves in the hunt for promotion from Division Two, closing out a three-day win over Gloucestershire by mid-afternoon, an unbroken partnership of 161 between Colin Ackermann and skipper Lewis Hill guiding them home by an impressive eight-wicket margin.Leicestershire have not played Division One cricket in the LV= Insurance County Championship since 2003 and realistically the odds against them returning next year are long, especially if Worcestershire consolidate their grip on second place by completing a win over Glamorgan at New Road. But the Foxes have a game in hand away to Sussex next week. If they can come back from the south coast with a fourth win of the season it would set up an intriguing finale in which Leicestershire and Worcestershire both have to face Yorkshire and Durham in their last two fixtures.Gloucestershire, relegated from Division One last season, are still looking for a first win of their campaign, having been bowled out here for 159 and 212 in conditions that, for the first two days at least, favoured the bowlers. It left Leicestershire needing 168 to win, a target they secured inside 42 overs. At the start of the day, Leicestershire needed 10 overs to prise out the two remaining Gloucestershire wickets at Monday’s close, or rather three from Wiaan Mulder after the seamers were initially held back to allow spinners Ackermann and Louis Kimber to address the matter of their side’s sedate over-rate, which stood at minus two overnight even after the usual adjustments.Once the dial had been sufficiently moved, Mulder bowled Dom Goodman, who chopped on, with his sixth ball and had Luke Charlesworth leg before with his 16th. Gloucestershire were grateful for an unbeaten 41 from Zaman Akhter – his highest score in 12 first-class innings to date. After two days in which batting had often looked a perilous occupation, Gloucestershire would have felt the outcome was no foregone conclusion and they were encouraged by removing both Leicestershire openers in the first five overs, both caught behind off Josh Shaw, who tempted Rishi Patel to nibble at one outside off stump and profited again via a thin top edge as Sol Budinger slashed at a much wider ball. But Hill and Ackermann avoided further mishaps in the 15 overs left before lunch, eventually beginning to push the scoreboard along, taking turns to hit three boundaries in an over off Luke Charlesworth and Akhter in trimming 76 runs off the requirement to leave another 95 needed. The pair were watchful after lunch as Shaw delivered three consecutive maidens at the Pavilion End with Zafar Gohar’s left-arm spin building pressure at the other end.It was eased, though, when Ackermann took back-to-back boundaries off Shaw and as their partnership moved into three figures, Hill completed his seventh half-century of the season from 74 balls, quickly followed by Ackermann’s from 84.With time on their side, the duo had the luxury of knowing they need not take any risks, waiting for the inevitable bad ball to put away, Ackermann eventually taking the lead role, cuts and late cuts providing the biggest proportion of his 14 boundaries, with a six over long-on off Ollie Price’s offspin thrown in for good measure.

Kuldeep Sen set to move from MP to TN

Kuldeep Sen has taken 52 wickets in 17 first-class games, to go with 49 strikes in List A and T20 cricket•PTI

Madhya Pradesh fast bowler Kuldeep Sen, who made his international debut in December last year, is set to play for Tamil Nadu in the 2023-24 domestic season. It is understood that Kuldeep has been cleared by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) to turn out as a guest player for Tamil Nadu.Kuldeep has taken 52 wickets so far in 17 first-class games to go with 49 strikes in List A and T20 cricket. He is currently working his way back from injury and his recovery is being monitored by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He played only two IPL games earlier this year and hasn’t played any competitive cricket since April.Kuldeep isn’t part of the Tamil Nadu’s sides in the Buchi Babu tournament, which has been revived to serve as preparation for the Ranji Trophy. But his impending inclusion in the Tamil Nadu attack could be a significant boost for a team that is searching for its first Ranji Trophy title since 1987-88. They had last made the Ranji knockouts in 2016-17, when T Natarajan burst onto the scene and strengthened the pace attack.Gaurav Yadav has also obtained an NOC from MPCA to play for Puducherry in the upcoming domestic season. He is set to replace bowling allrounder Ankit Sharma, who also hails from MP. Paras Dogra and KB Arun Karthik are likely to be the other two professionals for Puducherry. Gaurav was the highest wicket-taker among all seamers, with 23 strikes in five games, in MP’s run to the Ranji title in 2022.Earlier, there were reports of Hanuma Vihari moving from Andhra to MP, but it is understood that he has now opted to stay back at Andhra. Delhi left-arm fast bowler Kulwant Khejroliya, meanwhile, is in consideration to fill the void created by the departure of Kuldeep and Gaurav at MP.With Tamil Nadu lacking out-and-out fast bowlers, new head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni was keen on bringing in a quick from outside the state, especially for the Ranji Trophy. When in rhythm, Kuldeep can hit speeds north of 140kph and also trouble batters with extra bounce. He brings with him the experience of having been part of an MP squad that had won the Ranji Trophy recently in 2022. He will now lead Tamil Nadu’s pace attack that could potentially include Sandeep Warrier, who had moved from Kerala in 2020 but is now a local player since he is employed with India Cements in the state, and rookie H Trilog Nag.Left-arm pacer Gurjapneet Singh, who was particularly impressive for Madurai Panthers in the TNPL, could step in for Natarajan, who has shifted his focus to white-ball cricket after a recurrence of a knee injury. In their quest to build a large pool of bowlers, especially pacers, the TNCA had recently launched a talent-hunt programme, casting their scouting nets wider. The shortlisted bowlers were subsequently part of camps in Chennai, Theni and Tiruppur.Kulkarni had also overseen two preparatory camps in Coimbatore and Dindigul, ahead of the new domestic season. Kulkarni then attended games in the TNPL along with bowling coach L Balaji.Vijay Shankar and M Shahrukh Khan will be the captains of the TNCA president’s XI and TNCA XI sides in the four-day Buchi Babu tournament that will run from August 15 to September 11 in the districts. Senior spinner R Ashwin has been rested while Washington Sundar will be on national duty in Dublin. Teams from Mumbai, Delhi, MP, Bengal, Haryana, Baroda, Kerala and Jammu & Kashmir will also compete in the tournament.

Adriano 2.0: Nottingham Forest join hectic race to sign "gifted" wonderkid

Looking to put Edu Gaspar’s South American links to good use right away, Nottingham Forest have reportedly joined the race to sign the latest Brazilian wonderkid who’s been compared to Adriano.

Edu eyeing first Nottingham Forest targets

Joining Evangelos Marinakis at his portfolio of clubs which includes Nottingham Forest, former Arsenal sporting director Edu is seemingly looking to make his mark from the off. With Champions League qualification on the horizon too, the Brazilian is likely to be arriving at a time when those at the City Ground have more pull power than ever in the Premier League.

He may have played his final game for the club…

Marinakis previously spoke about Edu’s qualities after he left Arsenal, telling reporters: “Edu was a very good player and also a very good sporting and technical director. I have a lot of respect for him. The results we saw over the years at Arsenal were very good and he has done an excellent job at Arsenal.

“What I can say is that I would like to cooperate with him on a much bigger project, a global project. I’m optimistic that in case all this goes ahead, it will be another successful venture for both of us. I’m very optimistic about it, but we need to see how this will be developed and will be finalised, if and when time allows.”

The Brazilian’s first reported targets at the club certainly reflect Forest’s current ambitions too, with the likes of Victor Osimhen and Darwin Nunez threatening to steal the headlines in recent weeks.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhencelebrates scoring a goal that was later disallowed

Osimhen would be a particularly impressive arrival, given his experience on Europe’s top stage and how he has dominated on loan at Galatasaray this season. Such a player deserves to be playing Champions League football and Forest could be in a position to offer exactly that this summer. Meanwhile, the same can be said for one particular future star.

Nottingham Forest join race to sign Rayan

What Edu can instantly put to good use is his South American links to help those in the Midlands win the race to sign a rising star. According to The Boot Room, Nottingham Forest are now racing to sign Rayan from Vasco da Gama this summer in what would see the 18-year-old complete his first transfer outside of Brazil.

The young winger is certainly one to watch, with Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Forest all forming a hectic Premier League race to secure his signature.

That interest should come as no surprise after football talent scout Jacek Kulig compared him to the legendary Adriano and South American football expert Nathan Joyes dubbed the teenager “gifted”.

Whether the rising star is a gift that Edu will be able to hand Nuno Espirito Santo this summer remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that Rayan will be spoilt for choice when selecting his next move.

The home-grown player is under contract there until 2029 after extending his contract early last autumn. His fixed transfer fee is €500 million.

At the beginning of June, he said on about his future: "I have no intention of leaving. I am very happy at Barca. Playing here was my dream and I want to stay."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Bayern are currently being linked with a whole host of players for their attack. The pursuit of their preferred candidate Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen ended in disappointment and Leroy Sane decided against extending his expiring contract in Munich, instead joining Galatasaray. Thomas Muller is also leaving on a free transfer after the Club World Cup in the USA. The latest possible signings to be discussed are Nico Williams from Athletic Club and AC Milan star Rafael Leao.

While things have quietened down around Leao, there are growing signs that Williams would prefer to move to Barcelona. According to reports, there have been talks between the winger and representatives of the Blaugrana again in the past 24 hours. Club boss Joan Laporta is now looking into how the transfer can be made to happen for the financially stricken Catalans. Ben Jacobs writes that Williams is even willing to lower his high salary demands in order to secure a move to Barca.

  • A LOOK AT THE FIGURES:

If Barcelona manage to sign Williams, this would mean even more competition for Fermin Lopez. The attacking midfielder can also play on the left wing. Last season, he played in 46 matches under head coach Hansi Flick, but only six times for the full 90 minutes. He scored eight goals and provided 10 assists.

    WHAT NEXT?

A summer move to Bayern seems unlikely for Fermin this summer, meaning the German giants may have to look elsewhere to strengthen Vincent Kompany's team ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.
