Chris Cooke, Colin Ingram cut loose to leave Middlesex down and out on their outground

Glamorgan 238 for 3 (Cooke 113*, Ingram 92*) beat Middlesex 209 for 5 (Cracknell 77, Eskinazi 59) by 29 runsMiddlesex’s captain Stephen Eskinazi had finished the first match at Merchant Taylor’s School two days earlier, incandescent about how a seemingly straightforward run-chase had coagulated when victory seemed certain. This time runs came in a torrent at the end of an innings, just as they are meant to. The only problem for Middlesex was that they belonged to Glamorgan.Glamorgan set their highest T20 score, 238 for 3, as they pulverised 72 from the last three overs on the same ground where Middlesex – with Gloucestershire the grateful opposition – had failed to get nine from the last two on the same pitch: a stark comparison that might well have entered Eskinazi’s consciousness on the journey home.Either Chris Cooke or Colin Ingram, both South African-born, could have reached their hundred with a couple more prodigious blows as Glamorgan’s innings entered its final over – by that time it largely depended who was on strike – but it was Cooke who made 113 from 51 balls while Ingram had to settle for 92 from 66. Staggeringly, Cooke moved from 50 to 100 in only 12 balls, a sequence including five sixes and four fours.John Simpson, Middlesex’s experienced wicketkeeper, and one of the two senior players at the crease as Middlesex failed to beat Gloucestershire, had been dropped for this game. Ryan Higgins, the other culprit, might have wished he had been too as his wayward four overs disappeared for 62. The all-rounder’s much-heralded return home from Gloucestershire has been followed by good Championship returns but is yet to bear fruit in the Blast.Blake Cullen was the only bowler to escape the carnage, returning 2 for 23, most of his overs bowled as Glamorgan wandered to 51 for 3 in 6.5 overs, but Tom Helm was flayed to the tune of 0 for 69, his last two overs going for 25 and 27 respectively, the worst figures ever by a Middlesex bowler in the format.Ingram already has four T20 hundreds; this was Cooke’s first and, 37 now, he celebrated the achievement as only a player who feels the shadows lengthening on his career can. Helm, Middlesex’s most potent T20 bowler, began the last over with Cooke still 12 short, but he deposited two full-length balls, the first one a slower ball, over deep midwicket with the sort of repetitive clean hitting that had characterised an increasingly out-of-control partnership of 187 in 79 balls.”It’s the first time I’ve played here, so hopefully I can come back as it’s a great place to bat,” Cooke said. “We had 180 as a par score which wouldn’t have been enough. I’d like to think I’ve hit the ball close to as good as that before, but I didn’t really have a T20 hundred in my career on my radar, with me batting at five or six, so it’s amazing to get it.”Middlesex would have had to achieve a record score batting second to overhaul Glamorgan’s total – the highest is Sussex’s 233 for 6 last summer, and even they lost at Chelmsford – but Eskinazi and James Cracknell provided a platform with a stand of 146 in 12 overs before both fell reverse-sweeping. They needed one more innings of substance, but instead delivered a meek mish-mash of half-baked strokes as Glamorgan’s bowlers proved far more resilient.Cracknell, like so many white-ball specialists in county cricket, deserves great credit for early-season success. Preparation time can be limited as the switch is made from the Championship format in which he takes no part. “It’s been a really odd season,” he conceded. “I’ve had one red-ball innings in the 2s so to go from that and be told you are opening the innings in the white-ball stuff with little practice and middle time has been strange. But I’ve been given the backing and this is the format I’ve had most success in so I’m feeling good.”Most eye-catching was Peter Hatzoglou, the “accidental cricketer”, whose background in risk consulting presumably helped him put Middlesex’s response into perspective. Hatzoglou approaches like a conjurer – all ball tosses and feverish arms – and it was enough to delude Cracknell as he tried to reverse-sweep a long hop that had strayed wide outside off stump and his lifted foot enabled Cooke to complete a stumping. Hatzoglou’s second wicket was Pieter Malan, Middlesex’s sole overseas player, who was bowled by a faster delivery as he attempted a leg-side heave. Prem Sisodiya turned in another good shift on a good night for Glamorgan’s spinners. The Blast is never more rural than the week or so when Middlesex temporarily abandon Lord’s for the delights of Merchant Taylor’s School and Radlett. It feels as if the tenants of a stately home have suddenly upped sticks and gone on a camping holiday, exchanging the silver service and an attentive butler for a soggy beefburger on a plastic plate. The runs flow, so much so that it puts some tired county squares to shame, the settings are delightful and its all jolly nice, reminiscent of some of the outgrounds used when 40-over cricket saved county cricket from financial disaster half a century ago. It has its place, but it would be counter-intuitive, at best, to argue that it is what the Blast needs if it is to retain its status as a global T20 tournament worthy of attention. It also puts the financial position of Middlesex into focus. With the club’ assets last quoted as down to £179,000, a fall from around £2m in two years, they even invited questions from the ECB about what was going on. In terms of perentage of income, no county is subsidised more heavily.Playing at Lord’s gives Middlesex an air of privilege, but they are more in tune with the average millennial in that it’s hard to see how they will ever afford their own home. Whenever they play at Lord’s, MCC get £16,000 as the cost of staging the game and 30% of whatever proceeds remain. Play on an outground and a convivial crowd of a few thousand is not about to transform the finances unless a hedge fund manager gets tipsy in the bar after the game and agrees a sponsorship deal. They have to cut their cloth to suit – appropriate enough on the cricket ground of a school founded by a group of craftsmen tailors. Those tailors might have warned that going out of fashion is a very dangerous thing.

Berta blow as £327k-per-week star rejects Arsenal offer and signs new deal

Arsenal made a concrete offer to one big-name star to join them this summer, following transfer talks with the player’s camp, but sporting director Andrea Berta has been dealt a serious blow in his pursuit of the Gunners target.

Andrea Berta praised amid Arsenal arrival

The 53-year-old, despite interest from Man United and PSG (Sky Sports), agreed to become Arsenal’s new sporting director to replace Edu Gaspar – and he arrives at the Emirates with an absolutely glowing reputation.

The Italian is set to orchestrate an ambitious project.

Berta was responsible for orchestrating high-profile deals for the likes of João Félix and Diego Costa, whilst also signing future Balon d’Or winner Rodri for just £16.5 million from Villarreal in 2018.

The Italian has been a major part of Atlético’s success on the field over the last decade, prompting Arsenal to earmark him as a top target for the sporting director’s job after he left the Wanda Metropolitano in January.

“Andrea Berta arrives from Atletico Madrid with an exciting reputation for Arsenal supporters in the transfer market,” said Sky Sports reporter Peter Smith.

“He also has a ringing endorsement from those he has done deals with, praised for his meticulous approach but also the way he conducts business. The man who signed Rodri, Antoine Griezmann and Jan Oblak in bargain deals – and sold two of those three on at a substantial profit – will be expected to live up to that billing in north London.

“The pressure will be on to deliver a summer window which brings an out-and-out number nine and a midfield refresh to allow Mikel Arteta’s team to take the final step in their pursuit of the Premier League title.

“Edu, Berta’s predecessor, overhauled the club with Arteta during his five-year spell at the helm. Now, with a talented young squad, including a depth of defensive options, the finishing touches need to be applied to turn Arsenal into champions.”

Berta could also turn to the free agent market in search of options. It is reported that Arsenal are contenders to sign Leroy Sane from Bayern Munich on a free transfer, and there was also serious interest in his teammate, Joshua Kimmich.

Arsenal make "formal" proposal to Joshua Kimmich after talks

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg claimed last week that Arsenal were competing with PSG for the Germany international, as his Bayern contract was winding down at the time, and CaughtOffside shared a further update today.

The outlet reported that Arsenal made a “formal proposal” to Kimmich after contact with his representatives. Mikel Arteta’s side, though, will now have to move on from the versatile Champions League winner.

Bayern Munich's JoshuaKimmichcelebrates

The Bavarians have confirmed that Kimmich has put pen to paper on a contract extension until 2029, which Plettenberg reports includes a salary rise to around £17 million-per-year, roughly around £327,000-per-week.

This comes as a slight blow for the Gunners, but they do have midfield alternatives, even if Kimmich has been lauded as a “phenomenal player” following his exploits in the Bundesliga.

“I see him as a top right-back, left-back, centre-back, No.6, No.8, No.10… he has the qualities to be anything,” said José Mourinho.

“I think he looks to me, very intelligent related to football, very intelligent, understands the moments of the games and understands the difference between positions and understands what he has to do here and what he has to do there.

“I think he’s phenomenal, an absolutely phenomenal player.”

Arteta's "world-class" signing is becoming Arsenal's modern-day Vieira

When it comes to legends, not many clubs can boast more than Arsenal.

The Gunners have been blessed with simply incredible players over the years, especially during their Invincibles era.

An attack that included Thierry Henry and Robert Pirès, a defence boasting Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole and a midfield with the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Gilberto Silva in it – it was a side that could give any team a proper game.

Moreover, the man who led them was as tough as he was technically brilliant, Patrick Vieira, and it looks as if Mikel Arteta may just have his own version of the Frenchman in the squad today.

Vieira's Arsenal career

Arsenal signed Vieira for what now looks like a minuscule fee of just £3.5m in the summer of 1996, and while he was just coming off an unsuccessful spell with AC Milan, it didn’t take long for the French superstar to prove his worth in red and white.

He made 38 appearances across all competitions, 37 of which were starts, in his first campaign for the club, and in just his second season, he played a vital role in helping the team win the Premier League and FA Cup.

For most of his time in the capital, the Dakar-born titan was an integral part of the often ferocious rivalry between the Gunners and Manchester United, with his battles with Roy Keane still considered some of the most exciting in the league’s history.

Never afraid to back down from a fight or shrink under lofty expectations, it made perfect sense when he was handed the captaincy in 2002, and it was under his leadership that the club picked up another league title and FA Cup.

When Vieira left to join Juventus in the summer of 2005, he had amassed a staggering 405 appearances for the club, in which he had scored 32 goals, provided 45 assists and averaged 2.01 points per game.

It would be fair to say that while they certainly tried, Arsenal were unable to truly replace the French star for well over a decade after he left, until Arteta made a record-breaking signing in 2023, that is.

Arsenal's new Vieira

So, it’ll come as no surprise to most of you that the player we are talking about is, of course, Declan Rice.

Arsenal splashed a club-record £105m on the former West Ham United captain in the summer of 2023, and while he has not achieved anything close to what Vieira did at the club, there are some undeniable similarities between the pair.

The first is the simple fact that, like the Frenchman, the Gunners’ number 41 is a midfielder who excels at both the defensive and offensive sides of playing in the middle of the park.

For example, while the “world-class” Englishman, as dubbed by journalist Tom Marshall-Bailey, has become more of an eight at the Emirates, he’s still just as effective at breaking up play as he ever was, be that with a sliding tackle, or a well-timed standing tackle – he’s a defensive unit, much like the former Arsenal star.

Moreover, just as the former captain was capable of scoring or assisting a goal at times, the 26-year-old has also become someone the manager can rely upon to help out in the attack, as in 91 appearances, he’s scored 12 goals and provided 18 assists.

Finally, while Wenger officially handed the former Invincible the armband, it’s incredibly apparent that the 62-capped Englishman is one of Arteta’s leaders on the pitch, as, even without the official title of captain, he’s often the one sharing the boss’s instructions to his teammates, and is undoubtedly more vocal than Martin Odegaard.

Ultimately, Vieira is one of Arsenal’s greatest-ever players, and while Rice has yet to achieve anything close to what he did at the club, he is starting to act a lot more like him on the pitch, and who knows, with a more clinical forward next season, he could also start hoovering up trophies in N5.

Ronaldo raised a few eyebrows earlier this year when he declared himself the GOAT ahead of Lionel Messi, Diego Maradona, Pele and indeed Yamal. The Barca teenager, who is in contention to win the Ballon d'Or, has now been asked about Ronaldo's comments and whether he would be tempted to follow suit and declare himself the best player in the world currently. Yamal was asked: "Are you ashamed to say that maybe, for you, you are the best player of the year? That happened to Cristiano, who said it, and then people said he was a jerk. But maybe you think you deserve the trophy?"

    WHAT LAMINE YAMAL SAID

Yamal was quick to respond with a diplomatic answer. He told "I don't think about it. You'll be in trouble if you think about winning the Ballon d'Or. You think about playing, winning, and it will come. If I win the Champions League and the World Cup next year, it will come. It's about enjoying it and letting it come when it has to."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Still to celebrate his 18th birthday, Yamal played a huge role in Barcelona securing a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana domestic treble in 2024-25. His 43 combined goals and assists, his all-round starring role and the fact that he is still of school age, has made made the youngster a Ballon d'Or contender. However, there is stiff competition from Barcelona team-mate Raphinha, Liverpool hero Mohamed Salah and Paris Saint-Germain talisman Ousmane Dembele for when the prize is handed out in September.

The youngest ever Ballon d'Or winner to date is Ronaldo Nazario, who was 21 years and three months when he captured his first gong in 1997. If Yamal wins it in 2025, 2026, 2027 or 2028, aged 21 years and two months in the latter, he would break that record.

Kishan and Suryakumar topple Knight Riders despite Venkatesh 104

The other Knight Riders struggled on a slow pitch and an excellent innings went in vain

Sreshth Shah16-Apr-20232:54

Moody: ‘Mumbai Indians will have to outbat oppositions to win consistently’

On a special day for the Mumbai Indians franchise, their home fans were treated to a commanding victory over Kolkata Knight Riders, with contributions from Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Piyush Chawla and Hrithik Shokeen. The all-round effort from the Mumbai team overshadowed Venkatesh Iyer’s 51-ball 104 that had single-handedly lifted the Knight Riders to 185. Iyer broke Knight Riders’ jinx of no IPL centuries since Brendon McCullum’s 158* from 15 years ago, but the other batters were not fluent. That meant Knight Riders finished below par and Kishan’s powerplay dominance (58 off 25) made it even worse for them. Suryakumar, the stand-in captain, then showed glimpses of his best (43 off 25) with solid contributions from Tilak Varma and Tim David to polish off the win. There was also a debut for Arjun Tendulkar, the son of Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar. He bowled two new-ball overs that showed promise for the future.Venkatesh ends KKR’s century curseSometimes intent matters more than timing. Or so it seemed in Venkatesh’s case. Walking in after N Jagadeesan fell for a duck early, he hit Tendulkar and Cameron Green for sixes to race away to 19 in 8 balls. He often charged out of hise crase, using his reach to convert length balls into fuller deliveries, and even if he wasn’t timing it, he was clearing the boundaries. He also survived some inside-edges that whizzed past the stumps for four, including the ball that got him to fifty in 23 deliveries.Sometimes Venkatesh looked a million dollars. Like when he pulled both Riley Meredith and debutant Duan Jansen – Marco’s twin – for sixes in the 11th and 12th overs. At other times, Venkatesh rode his luck with his footwork getting him in awkward positions.Another six off Meredith in the 14th over took Venkatesh to 94, but he wouldn’t reach his century till his 17th, with Mumbai’s bowlers squeezing him and Shardul Thakur with three tight overs. When he got there, he presented a wide grin and acknowledged the crowd. He couldn’t stay till the end though. In the 18th over, an attempted reverse scoop off Meredith resulted in an easy catch on 104 for short third.Chawla leads Mumbai’s bowling effortSuryakumar chose to bowl at the toss. Tendulkar took the new ball and got it to swing early. He bowled six dots and finished 0-17 in two overs. Green kept tight lines and Shokeen’s offbreaks to two left-handers kept one end quiet.Trying to increase his strike-rate, Rahmanullah Gurbaz was caught at short third off Chawla. Then things got heated when Nitish Rana was dismissed by his state team-mate Shokeen. Shoekeen went on to remove Shardul Thakur, slog sweeping to the deep and Rinku Singh couldn’t repeat his recent heroics either, making only 18.It was Venkatesh’s hitting – a total outlier in the Knight Riders innings – that had kept them on course for a 200+ score, but Shokeen, Chawla and Jansen bowled three tidy overs between 15 and 17 to take some momentum out from the batting innings. Russell faced only 11 balls after walking in at No. 7 and hit 21 unbeaten runs to set Mumbai 186 to win.Ishan’s burst and Rohit’s ‘Impact’Rohit, who didn’t start the game due to a ‘stomach bug’, walked in as opener after Mumbai activated their Impact Player. He was very nearly caught-and-bowled by Umesh Yadav off his first ball. For most of the powerplay, he was spectator to Kishan’s thrashing of Knight Riders’ bowlers before falling for 20.Kishan punished Shardul for 4, 4, 6 through the off side in the second over. He then showed his leg-side play with a four and six off Umesh in the third. When Narine came in to bowl the chase’s fourth over, he was hit for 22 with Kishan going 6, dot, 6, 4 through slogs. He got his fifty in 21 balls.Kishan then smashed Varun Chakravarthy for six to move to 58, but when he tried to repeat it, he was bowled. But the openers had done their job. According to ESPNcricinfo’s forecaster, Mumbai were 30% favourites to win the game at the start of the chase. By the time Kishan and Rohit were gone, Mumbai were 87 for 2 in 7.3 overs – now 70% favourites.Tilak, SKY bring it homeThe blazing start gave both batters the liberty to start cautiously but the big hits came out soon enough, with Suryakumar punishing wide deliveries with cuts for four and Tilak slog sweeping Narine at the start of his second spell for six over square leg.Otherwise, they were cautious against spin through the middle overs with Rana being forced to use his best bowlers early. When Lockie Ferguson took the ball, Suryakumar brought out some vintage shots, picking up a full ball for six over fine leg and repeating it next ball over midwicket. Tilak and Suryakumar then picked off Russell for 17 in one over.Their partnership of 60 in 6.2 overs deflated Knight Riders, and after they were dismissed, David made a dash for the finish. His 24 in 13 balls sealed the deal with 14 balls to spare and gave Mumbai a net-run rate boost.

Nitish, Shokeen fined after altercationNitish Rana and Hrithik Shokeen, who are team-mates for Delhi at state level, were both fined for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct after exchanging words following the former’s dismissal. Nitish charged down the pitch to Shokeen, lofting him to long-on, and Shokeen appeared to give him a send-off after substitute fielder Ramandeep Singh took the catch.Nitish responded angrily and was escorted away from Shokeen by Suryakumar and Chawla. Nitish was fined 25% of his match fee under Article 2.21 of the Code of Conduct, which covers “all types of conduct that bring the game into disrepute”.Shokeen was fined 10% of his match fee under Article 2.5, which covers the use of “language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal”.Suryakumar was also fined INR 12 lakh (USD 14,000 approx.) for Mumbai’s slow over-rate.

Lost the ball 21x: Man Utd's 4/10 star showed why INEOS need to sell him

Nothing is ever easy at Manchester United these days is it…

Up against a Real Sociedad side who are currently ninth in LaLiga, the Red Devils had the chance to really take control of their Europa League first-leg tie, particularly with their Basque hosts offering little in the way of an attacking threat for much of the opening hour or so.

A strong opening from United did ultimately result in a well-deserved goal from Joshua Zirkzee, yet having missed a succession of chances both prior to and after that second-half strike, the visitors were subsequently made to pay for their wasteful nature.

Almost inevitably in a season that has been without luck or respite, Ruben Amorim’s men were pegged back after Bruno Fernandes was penalised for handball inside the area, with Sociedad skipper Mikel Oyarzabal duly converting to bring his side level.

Had it not been for a handful of Andre Onana saves – and a stunning miss from substitute Orri Oskarsson – United could well have gone into next week’s reverse fixture trailing, yet as it is, the tie is finely poised ahead of that meeting at Old Trafford.

Amorim will then be left to reflect on a night of mixed fortunes, with his side looking dangerous at times, albeit with there having been a familiar feeling in front of goal…

Man Utd's best performers vs Sociedad

Starting with the positives, it proved to be another promising performance from that man Zirkzee, with the 23-year-old – who had missed the decisive spot-kick at the weekend – calmly slotting home for his sixth goal of the season.

Joshua Zirkzee

While opposition ‘keeper Alex Remiro may be scratching his head at quite why he couldn’t keep out that relatively tame attempt from the Dutchman, the goal did round off a lovely, sweeping move from United, including a clever pull-back from the reinstated Alejandro Garnacho.

Also involved in the game’s opener was former Real Madrid hero, Casemiro, with the Brazilian producing a lovely outside-of-the-boot pass in the build-up to Zirkzee’s strike, having looked at ease on the night up against Spanish opposition once more.

The veteran midfielder notably won eight duels in the centre of the park, as per Sofascore, while also showcasing his passing prowess with a particularly astute dinked first-time ball over the top for Fernandes to pounce on.

A word must also be said for the centre-back trio, too, who were relatively untroubled until the final knockings of the game, with young Leny Yoro looking particularly impressive on the European stage, having notably won 100% of his aerial duels and recorded a stellar 94% pass accuracy rate.

The man alongside him, however, endured a far less comfortable evening it must be said, with Diogo Dalot producing yet another display that will call into question his future at the club under the INEOS regime.

Man Utd's 4/10 star must now be sold this summer

If the major theme from the night was United’s inability to kill the game off when they were in control, then the finger does also need to be pointed at Dalot for what could prove a costly decision from the first half.

Chalkboard

Indeed, with Rasmus Hojlund racing through the centre of the pitch and seemingly having a clear run at goal, the Portuguese full-back opted not to thread the ball across the box to the struggling striker, instead turning back into a congested penalty area.

Now without the excuse of being forced to operate in an unorthodox left wing-back role, the 25-year-old again illustrated why he may not be a natural fit for Amorim’s set-up, with his attacking quality needing to be called into question after registering just 20 goals and assists in 199 games for the club to date.

More frustratingly is also the former Porto’s knack for squandering possession, as he lost the ball on 21 occasions in total at the Reale Arena, just days after losing the ball 25 times against Fulham.

Such woes – which also saw him win just 50% of his duels – ensured that Dalot was branded with a measly 4/10 match rating by Daily Express journalist Alex Turk, who stated that ‘Amorim’s need for a specialist right-wing-back is so obvious’.

With talk in recent months suggesting that the United boss will look to reunite with Sporting CP starlet Geovany Quenda this summer, it could be an opportune time to cash in on Dalot, particularly as he appears to have “regressed” of late, according to journalist Alex Crook.

A solid servant Dalot has largely been in recent seasons, yet with a squad revamp in order, the full-back may need to be among those shown the door by INEOS.

Worth £50m more than Richarlison: Everton have struck gold on "monster" ace

Everton’s unbeaten streak continues.

On Saturday night, at a time David Moyes would normally be “a bottle of red wine down” in his own words, the Toffees were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolves at Molineux, taking the lead through Jack Harrison, only for the hosts to hit back very soon after.

Everton managerDavidMoyesbefore the match

Nevertheless, this extended the Toffees’ unbeaten streak to eight Premier League matches, their longest such sequence since 2012, which coincidentally came during Moyes’ first spell in charge.

Thus, the Blues appear set to be moving into their brand-new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock next season, not only still as a top division club, but also in high spirits although, by the time they play their first match there in August, could arguably their best player have been sold?

Richarlison repeat set to strike Everton

As noted by football finance expert Kieran Maguire, Everton have been poorly run for many years now, with Matt Slater of the Athletic documenting how ‘poor recruitment’ is the primary factor behind their ‘serious financial trouble’.

Everton squad vs Southampton

To name only a handful, Yannick Bolasie, Morgan Schneiderlin, Cenk Tosun, Davy Klaassen, Yerry Mina, Moise Kean, André Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Allan and Neal Maupay were signed for a combined £264.5m, with none of those players offering very much, and that’s only mentioning a select few.

Richarlson appeared destined to feature on this list too, arriving from Watford in 2018 for an eyebrow-raising £40m, a surprisingly high fee considering he’d scored just five goals in 41 appearances during one season with the Hornets.

Nevertheless, by the time the Brazilian departed, he’d established himself as a cult hero, with Greg O’Keeffe and Patrick Boyland of the Athletic believing that, without him, Everton would have been relegated.

That’s because, Richarlison scored 53 goals in 152 games for the Blues, 43 of which came in the league, meaning only six men have scored more Premier League goals for the club: Romelu Lukaku, Duncan Ferguson, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Tim Cahill, Kevin Campbell and Leon Osman.

Tottenham forward Richarlison.

So, after saving the Toffees from the drop in 2022, the Brazilian moved to Tottenham for a reported fee of £60m, making him the second-biggest departure in the club’s history, behind only the £90m Man United paid for the aforementioned Lukaku.

This move certainly has not worked out, with Richarlison scoring only 18 goals in 80 appearances for Spurs, labelled a ‘joke’ as well as ‘flop of the season’ by Gabriel Agbonlahor on talkSPORT, hence why Mick Brown of Football Insider is reporting that the striker is ‘pushing’ to move this summer, potentially on his way back to Goodison.

That aside, in a similar fashion to Richarlison’s departure in 2022, could Everton once again be forced to sell their star player to a Premier League rival?

Everton's best player on his way out?

According to a report by Mark Douglas and Sam Cunningham of the i Paper, Everton came extremely close to a PSR breach last year, so could Jarrad Branthwaite be sacrificed to balance the books?

The 22-year-old was the subject of strong interest from Manchester United last summer, but this never came to pass, with James Ducker of the Telegraph reporting he was valued at £70m.

Having stayed at Everton, the centre-back has started the Toffees’ last 18 Premier League matches, having recovered from groin surgery, so let’s analyse his statistics.

Despite the fact his statistics don’t exactly leap off the page, he is certainly influential in this Everton team, with scout Jacek Kulig labelling him a ‘monster’, and Jacob Whitehead and Mark Carey of the Athletic noting he is exceptional when it comes to winning ‘defensive duels’, believing he’s good enough to start for England.

Meantime, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was Branthwaite’s manager during a loan spell at PSV Eindhoven in the 2022/23 season, described him as “fantastic”, adding he was a “joy to work with” and that he has “a great future ahead for him”.

So, as much as Everton will not want to lose him, if a big offer comes in – reports have emerged suggesting he is now valued at £80m – now may be the right time to do a deal, with Richarlison’s departure proving that the Toffees are able to strike gold by selling at the right time considering he is now worth £29m, as per Football Transfers.

Not just Nkunku: Another "top talent" saved their Chelsea career this week

Chelsea put an end to their three-game loss streak on Tuesday night, beating Southampton 4-0 at Stamford Bridge. This was exactly the kind of game the Blues needed, to get three points on the board, score a couple of goals and regain some confidence that has been lost in recent weeks.

When looking at Chelsea’s underlying metrics for this season, you can see Enzo Maresca has already had an impact, keeping their possession numbers similar overall, but taking their shots per game to the highest it’s been in the last five seasons, whilst improving their poor defensive record from last term.

Back in December, Chelsea were sitting pretty at second place in the Premier League, looking extremely likely to secure Champions League football for the 2025/26 season and return to competing among Europe’s finest.

However, Maresca’s side have been hit with some very big injuries over the past few months, losing some key players that were massively influential to Chelsea’s brilliant run of form, which now means they are relying on a slightly lighter group to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

Christopher Nkunku's important week

One player Maresca is going to have to rely on more in the next few months is Christopher Nkunku, who did score the opener against Southampton in their recent 4-0 victory. The Frenchman was signed by Chelsea in 2023, joining the club for a fee of around £52m.

The 27-year-old has only managed to make 48 appearances for the Blues since joining, spending the majority of the 2023/24 season out with injury issues. In those 48 games, Nkunku has scored 17 goals, providing five assists and totalling 2,092 minutes played.

The forward’s biggest issue has been the fact Cole Palmer plays in his best position, occupying the number ten role, having the freedom to roam and connect play.

However, in the absence of Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke, Maresca has had to find other solutions in his forward line, moving the pieces around to get the best from them.

Nkunku managed to score a goal and set one up against the Saints, also managing two key passes, winning three of his five duels – ground and aerial – and taking four shots, two of which were on target.

But the Frenchman isn’t the only player who put in a well-timed performance, as fans were starting to grumble about a certain other individual who had been struggling in recent weeks.

Another Chelsea redemption

Levi Colwill has clearly been one of Maresca’s favourites since taking over at the club, starting 25 out of the possible 27 Premier League games so far, missing one through injury and being rested in the other.

Chalkboard

In those 25 appearances, Colwill has scored once, provided one assist, contributed to five clean sheets and totalled 2,250 minutes played, albeit while notably coming under fire for his “inexcusable” display in the 3-0 defeat to Brighton at the Amex.

That said, the 21-year-old defender helped to silence the doubters by putting in a strong display against Southampton, taking 96 touches in the match, completing 78/81 of his passes (96% accuracy), making one key pass, winning three of his five ground duels, winning two of his three aerial duels and, of course, scoring a goal.

Colwill has been described as a “top talent” in the past by Jacek Kulig, with many expecting the young defender to become one of the very best in his position in England. His ex-Brighton coach, Roberto De Zerbi, even stated, “It’s difficult to find another centre-back, left centre-back, with his quality”.

The talent of Colwill is clearly there for all to see, but the consistency has been struggling as of late. However, there could be a player returning from injury who will help Colwill a lot, forming a strong partnership earlier in the season, which saw the Blues go on their best run of form.

How Wesley Fofana's return can help Colwill

Wesley Fofana was officially back on the Chelsea bench against Southampton, having been out since the start of December, when he went off injured against Aston Villa.

Wesley Fofana for Chelsea

Before that, Fofana had started 12 out of a possible 13 Premier League games, the only one he missed being due to a suspension.

In those 12 games, Fofana partnered Colwill on all 12 occasions, winning seven times, drawing four times and only losing once, which was their opening-day defeat against Manchester City.

When you compare the defensive duo’s underlying metrics this season, you can see how they complement each other nicely, with Fofana being the slightly more aggressive defender, looking to step in, make ball recoveries, and apply pressure, whilst Colwill is slightly more methodical, playing as a sweeper behind him.

This also goes for their on-ball partnership, as Fofana gives the Blues more ability to carry the ball out from defensive scenarios, kick-starting attacks by driving through the opposition press, whilst Colwill is more of a progressive passer, looking to dictate and orchestrate from the back.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

Fofana’s return to the side could be exactly what Colwill needs to rediscover his best form, and coming off the back of a strong performance against Southampton, he may now have the extra bit of confidence needed to go on a good run with his centre-back partner back by his side.
