Jan-Paul van Hecke salary: How much does Brighton star earn per week and annually in Premier League?

Everything you need to know about Jan-Paul van Hecke's salary at Brighton & Hove Albion

Dutch centre-back Jan-Paul van Hecke began his Premier League journey in 2020, signing for Brighton & Hove Albion. However, he was immediately loaned out after signing, spending a season with Heerenveen and then another with Blackburn Rovers.

Since his return to Brighton in 2022, Van Hecke has developed into a reliable defender and a strong presence in the backline for the Seagulls in the seasons that followed.

Van Hecke has now established himself as Brighton's first-choice centre back, with a contract that runs until 2027.

The Dutchman's salary, however, is relatively modest compared to other stars in the team. Exactly how much does he earn?

While Brighton's salaries may seem impressive, they are relatively modest compared to the Premier League's top earners. The list is predictably led by the league's most prominent figures.

Erling Haaland of Manchester City tops the list, having secured a nine-year contract that extends his stay at the Etihad until 2034. Following him is another City standout, Kevin De Bruyne, with Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah ranking third.

Highest paid players in the world

Despite the substantial salaries in the Premier League, neither player ranks among the top earners in global football.

Leading the list is Cristiano Ronaldo, the all-time top scorer in the Champions League, currently playing for Al Nassr. He is closely followed by his former Real Madrid teammate Karim Benzema.

Ex-Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez holds the third position, while Senegalese internationals Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly complete the list in fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Arsenal player ratings vs Bournemouth: Mikel Arteta, what are you doing?! Gunners head to Paris beaten & bruised as Bukayo Saka & Leandro Trossard struggle & Martin Odegaard defensive lapse proves costly

The Cherries stunned the Emirates to secure a famous double over the Gunners, who now travel to Paris licking their wounds after two defeats in a row

Arsenal slumped to a disappointing 2-1 loss to Bournemouth as Evanilson's controversial winning goal ensured the north Londoners would be heading into their Champions League showdown with Paris Saint-Germain without a win in their last three games.

With PSG making 10 changes to their starting XI ahead of Wednesday's semi-final decider, Mikel Arteta did the complete opposite as he opted to name all of his big-guns from the start against Andoni Iraola's Europe-chasing Cherries – a risky move that ultimately didn't pay off.

Indeed, it was one of those star names that made the difference in the first half, with Rice, having earlier skewed two shots wide, ensuring he wasn't going to waste a third opportunity as he rounded Kepa Arrizabalaga following Martin Odegaard's gorgeous through ball to make it 1-0.

Shortly before the goal, Evanilson had headed a massive chance over the bar and the Cherries had a further flurry of opportunities before half-time – Justin Kluivert and Evanilson both going close, with David Raya almost gifting the Brazilian a goal with a loose pass out from the back.

The visitors continued to carry a threat in the second period and they would get their reward. Coming soon after Bukayo Saka had curled a shot narrowly wide, Antoine Semenyo hurled in a long throw that the Gunners failed to deal with, leaving a practically unopposed Dean Huijsen to head home past Raya and into the net.

It soon went from bad to worse for Arsenal as another set-piece proved their undoing – a corner from the left was flicked on into Evanilson's path, with the Bournemouth forward cleverly getting goal-side and deflecting the ball in. A lengthy VAR check for a handball followed but ultimately it went the way of Iraola's men.

From then on, Arsenal never really looked like getting back into it and the Gunners now head to Paris, and one of the biggest nights in the club's history, without the morale-boosting win Arteta had clearly hoped for.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David Raya (5/10):

Made the Emirates panic with a number of risky passes out but can't attach any blame to him for either goal.

    Ben White (6/10):

More minutes in the tank and had a solid enough game that saw him win almost every header. Would've hoped to have got forward more, though.

    William Saliba (7/10):

Thwarted numerous dangerous Bournemouth attacks with his blocks and quick-thinking but he might've taken more responsibility and picked up the giant Huijsen for the equalising goal.

    Jakub Kiwior (5/10):

An untimely slip almost allowed Evanilson to head home and probably should've been more alert to the danger on the long throw that led to the equaliser.

    Myles Lewis-Skelly (5/10):

A quiet game for the exciting teenager who would've hoped to have had more of an impact higher up the pitch.

    Midfield

    Martin Odegaard (5/10):

Created Rice's goal with a clever through pass but undid his good work somewhat by allowing Evanilson to get the wrong side of him for Bournemouth's winner.

    Thomas Partey (5/10):

His mere presence in the team allows Rice more freedom to get forward but was sloppy with his passing and ceded possession on multiple occasions.

    Declan Rice (7/10):

Marked his 100th appearance for Arsenal with a typically lung-busting run and goal. His impact faded in the second half, though.

    Attack

    Bukayo Saka (4/10):

A rare off day. He almost scored with a curling shot that arrowed just wide in the second half but he should've done a lot better with a big headed chance.

    Gabriel Martinelli (5/10):

Had Araujo on toast in the first half and set-up two decent chances for Rice but his finishing remains an issue.

    Leandro Trossard (4/10):

Buzzed around but indecision and lack of end product spoiled his game and he was anonymous in the second half.

    Subs & Manager

    Mikel Merino (5/10):

On for Rice after 74 minutes but couldn't change the outcome.

    Ethan Nwaneri (N/A):

Replaced Saka with a few minutes left.

    Raheem Sterling (N/A):

Chucked on as part of a triple change as Arsenal chased the game.

    Oleksandr Zinchenko (N/A):

    Replaced White at the end.

    Mikel Arteta (4/10):

Made the bold move not to give any of his big names the evening off as he sought momentum but it backfired, with the Gunners now heading into their biggest game of the season off the back of another loss and without sufficient rest.

Celtic close to losing prolific teen star, it’s an awful Doak repeat

Celtic are enjoying a phenomenal season as they sit 13 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, are in the play-off phase of the Champions League, and have already won the League Cup.

Youth has not played a significant role in their success, though, as 31-year-old midfielder Callum McGregor is the only academy graduate to have started matches on a regular basis for Brendan Rodgers this term.

Callum McGregor

The Hoops have not been adept at bringing through academy talent into the first-team in recent years, as they lost Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata to Millwall and Watford respectively last summer.

Possibly the biggest example of a prodigious talent that got away, however, is Scotland international Ben Doak, who came through the youth set-up in Glasgow before sealing a move to England.

Ben Doak's untapped Celtic potential

The teenage sensation made his way through the academy ranks at Parkhead before he made two first-team appearances under Ange Postecoglou at the age of 16 in the 2021/22 campaign.

However, the Scottish giants were unable to convince the young winger to remain at the club beyond his contract at the time and Premier League side Liverpool swooped in to secure his services for a reported compensation fee of £600k in the summer of 2022.

Doak racked up ten first-team appearances in his first two seasons with the Reds before being sent out on loan to Middlesbrough, where he has produced three goals and seven assists in 24 Championship matches in the 2024/25 campaign.

These statistics show that the 19-year-old whiz has made a big impact at the top end of the pitch in the second tier of English football, and that indicates that he could have been a great option for the Hoops to have in their current squad.

Liverpool reportedly put a £30m price tag on his head in the January transfer window, amid interest from Premier League side Crystal Palace, which illustrates how much untapped potential there was for the Hoops with the forward.

They missed out on a terrific talent and a hugely valuable asset by failing to convince him to turn down a move to Anfield to stay in Glasgow and compete for a place under Postecoglou.

Doak, who has been capped six times by Scotland at senior level, has quickly developed into an excellent player at first-team level since his move away from the Hoops.

Transfer Focus

Celtic are now facing an awful repeat of this situation – losing a talented youngster who could go on to great things – as one of their B team stars is set for a move to the Premier League this summer.

Celtic set to lose teen star

According to ExWHUEmployee, on TheWestHamWay’s Patreon, Celtic centre-forward Daniel Cummings is in the process of completing a medical with West Ham United.

The report claims that the Scottish youngster started parts of his medical with the Premier League side on Sunday and that it has continued on Monday, ahead of a summer switch to the London outfit.

Cummings is out of contract at the end of the season and it was reported, in January, that Celtic were due to offer him a new contract to remain at Parkhead on fresh terms.

ExWHUEmployee’s report adds that the Hammers are due to pay a compensation fee for the teenage striker, as he has been trained by the Hoops, but it is unclear as to how much that will be at this point.

It also reveals that West Ham chief Mark Noble, who previously captained the Hammers in the Premier League, was ‘influential’ in convincing the forward to pick a move to the London Stadium.

The Hoops appear to have left it too late to decide to offer the young attacker a contract extension, waiting until the last five months of his deal, and it looks set to sting them as Cummings is now close to a move to England, and it could be an awful repeat of the Doak situation.

Why Daniel Cummings could be Ben Doak 2.0

The former Celtic winger, as aforementioned, has gone on to become a £30m-rated talent who has proven himself at first-team level in the Championship in England, after leaving Parkhead for a paltry £600k.

Whilst it remains to be seen how much compensation West Ham will have to pay for Cummings, the Hoops are not going to get a multi-million-pound sum for the 18-year-old marksman, but he has the potential to become a hugely valuable asset in the future.

The Scotland U19 international has been in incredible form in all competitions for the academy this season, with a staggering return of 25 goals in 28 matches.

Cummings has been a prolific centre-forward for the B team and U19 side, with 19 goals in 20 Lowland League games and six goals in seven UEFA Youth League outings, and was rewarded with a first-team debut against Aston Villa off the bench at the end of January.

As you can see in the table above, the 18-year-old attacker has continually improved his output in the final third season-on-season in the Lowland League for the B team.

These statistics show that Cummings is on an upward trajectory and that is improving as a player each year, which is a promising sign for West Ham as they are set to sign a prolific teen who is just getting better and better.

Whilst there is no guarantee that the young marksman will go on to become a star in the Premier League for the Hammers, or go on to be valued at £30m like Doak, his incredible form and development for Celtic suggests that the potential is there for him to do so.

Therefore, the Hoops are on the verge of an awful repeat of the Doak situation as they could watch Cummings go to England to thrive, instead of convincing him to stay and eventually emerge as a star in the first-team for Rodgers.

Now worth less than Taylor: Celtic struck gold selling Ange favourite

Celtic appear to have made a wise move by cashing in on one former hero

ByRobbie Walls Feb 17, 2025

There is a worrying trend emerging of young players deciding that moving down south to develop in England is better for them than staying at Celtic and the Bhoys need to find a way of convincing their best talents that their development is best served at Parkhead if they want to produce quality academy graduates.

Saved by Maddison: Ange must drop 6/10 Spurs star who lost the ball 13x

Seeing off Manchester United on Sunday, Tottenham Hotspur have now won back-to-back matches in the Premier League and will look to make further headway and close down Brighton & Hove Albion on the edge of the top half.

This is hardly what Ange Postecoglou will have envisaged for his second season in charge of Spurs, having also been dumped out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup this month, but context is important: Tottenham have been throttled by injuries.

Tottenham Hotspur manager AngePostecogloucelebrates after the match

However, there might now be real daylight at the end of the tunnel, with Tottenham pushing their way out of the selection crisis that has hit their campaign like a freight train.

To be sure, Postecoglou’s squad is on the mend, and having claimed a ticket to the last 16 of the Europa League, there’s still hope that something special can be salvaged from this testing and taxing year.

James Maddison made his return from injury on Sunday evening, darted into space to lash home from close range to score the only goal of the game. His form could be the key over the coming months.

James Maddison makes his return

One of Tottenham’s chief – if not the – playmakers, Maddison’s chequered Tottenham career has met its hurdles primarily because of injuries. His electric start in 2023/24 was halted by a ruinous ankle setback, and he has missed recent weeks of action due to a calf strain.

He returned with vim and vigour against Man United, poking in to take his tally to nine Premier League goals from 22 games this season, having also placed four assists.

James Maddison celebrates for Tottenham

Respected journalist Henry Winter commented post-match that Tottenham were “hungrier and better organised” than their counterparts, with Maddison “clinical when it counted.”

His dynamism and energy are things that Tottenham used to channel their Ange-patent slickness and bite, with Maddison ranking among the top 1% of Premier League midfielders this term for goals, the top 10% for assists and shot-creating actions and the top 5% for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref.

A player of parts, then. Maddison wasn’t at his rip-roaring best against United but his skill set still added something of value to Tottenham’s team, helped the likes of Mathys Tel, who was wasteful yet promising, and acted as the focal creative presence, with his teammates turning to his agency.

With a trip to Ipswich Town followed by the mid-week hosting of Manchester City, Tottenham will need to use their recent success as a springboard. It might mean that Ange should issue some rotation next weekend.

The fact that this is even possible speaks volumes regarding how bad the injury crisis has been, but with frontliners back on the pitch, Ange might consider boldly dropping his captain, Heung-min Son.

Why Ange should drop Heung-min Son

Son, 32, is a Tottenham legend, having played 442 matches for the Londoners, notched 264 goal involvements and received the captaincy after Harry Kane and then Hugo Lloris left the club.

He’s been forced to shoulder quite the heavy burden this season with his teammates dropping like flies. Centre-forwards Dominic Solanke and Richarlison are currently sidelined, while Brennan Johnson and Wilson Odobert returned from the injury front yesterday, the former earning some game time.

Writing in his post-match ratings, football.london’s Alasdair Gold did give Son a 6/10 player rating and acknowledged his effort toward clinching a much-needed win, but he lacked some of his usual incisiveness in front of goal, also creating four key passes, as per Sofascore, but missing the mark with six of his eight crosses and squandering possession 13 times.

He’s still an important part of Tottenham’s team, not least because of his leadership skills, his galvanising quality. However, Son’s output has decreased.

A shift toward greater creative output – creating 13 big chances and averaging 1.9 key passes per Premier League match – has helped Son to stay a key member of the project, and of course, he will always be a first-class finisher, but his athleticism has slanted downward.

There’s also a case that Son benefitted from Maddison’s impetus behind him, allowing him to find greater space and security. Moreover, the excellent Djed Spence won seven of eight duels, winning four of three attempted dribbles, to create a sense of energy and urgency about Tottenham’s left flank. It’s a partnership that works well for Son, and saves him from being stretched too far.

It wasn’t Son’s worst performance of the season. He was lively and driven toward claiming an invaluable top-flight victory, also playing well in the closing stages as Tottenham scrambled to preserve their lead and clean sheet.

He’s hardly running on fumes and showed as much against Ruben Amorim’s beleaguered bunch, but Son has played an awful lot of football this season, more than Postecoglou would probably have wanted him to play.

Heung-min Son

Tottenham won’t walk into Portman Road with the false sense that three points will be a given; Ipswich have already beaten the Lilywhites in their own backyard this season.

However, with Johnson and Odobert back in the squad, Mikey Moore too, and Timo Werner also slated for a return this week, it might be wise to bench the skipper for this one, not least because he’s started ten of his club’s 12 matches across all competitions so far in 2025, playing to a high intensity.

Chalkboard

Hopefully, with strength in numbers, Tottenham can turn a corner here and push toward success to prove the many doubters wrong. Son will play a big part, but he cannot start every match.

Celtic’s new Tierney: Rodgers can replace Schlupp with exciting B team star

Celtic completed a huge deal in the January transfer window as it was revealed that they had agreed a pre-contract with Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.

The Scotland international’s contract with the Premier League side is set to expire at the end of the season, which is when the defender will officially sign for the Hoops to start his second spell at Parkhead.

Tierney, as you can see in the graphic above, enjoyed an incredibly successful time with Celtic after he came up through the academy system, winning five Scottish Premiership titles and providing a big threat at the top end of the pitch.

It will very interesting to see what the left-back situation does look like when the experienced Gunners defender eventually makes the move to Celtic in the summer window.

Celtic's current left-back situation

Greg Taylor is currently the first-choice left-back in Glasgow after seeing off a challenge from Alex Valle, whose loan from Barcelona was cut short in the January transfer window.

Celtic defender Greg Taylor

The Scottish full-back has started 18 of his 20 appearances in the Premiership so far this season, but Sportnet recently reported that he has signed a pre-contract agreement with Dinamo Zagreb ahead of a free transfer to Croatia in the summer.

As you can see in the table above, Taylor has offered a big creative threat from left-back and has been solid defensively, winning more than half of his duels.

Jeffrey Schlupp, meanwhile, was brought in on loan from Crystal Palace on deadline day to provide cover and competition in the left-back position.

Jeffrey Schlupp

The Ghana international won 100% (3/3) of his aerial duels in 18 minutes on his debut against Dundee, before starting the 5-0 win over Raith Rovers on Saturday.

Schlupp, at 32 and only on loan, is not the long-term answer to the left-back problem looming at Parkhead, with Taylor on his way to Dinamo Zagreb, and Brendan Rodgers could instantly replace him by unearthing the club’s new Tierney in Matthew Anderson.

Why Matthew Anderson could be Kieran Tierney 2.0

The Scotland U21 international has spent the past 18 months or so on loan at Austrian side Admira Wacker and has shown potential to be a future star for the Hoops.

He spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan in Austria and caught the eye with a return of one goal and six assists in 21 appearances as a left-back, which shows that the 20-year-old starlet has the potential to be a Tierney-esque figure who can provide a big threat in the final third from that role.

Anderson, who managed four goals and four assists in 25 matches for Celtic’s B team, did have a chance to impress with three appearances pre-season tour of the USA last summer and Rodgers described him as an “attacking threat” from left-back.

The Scottish youngster has produced one goal and one assist in nine league matches during the current campaign and the Celtic boss should provide the defender with an opportunity to stake a claim for a first-team spot next season, with Schlupp and Taylor set to be on their way.

Anderson, who still has plenty of time left to develop and improve, is a Hoops academy graduate with an attacking mindset and quality in the final third, which is why he could end up being Tierney 2.0 for the club.

And who better to learn from than the man himself next season? Rodgers could bring the Admira Wacker star into the first-team group next season and use him as Tierney’s understudy at first, with a view to him being the long-term option in that position.

Worth more than Maeda: Celtic hit gold with a star whose value soared £5.5m

Celtic hit the jackpot by selling the star who is now worth more than Daizen Maeda.

Therefore, the Scottish giants could instantly replace Schlupp, who is due to return to Palace in the summer, by bringing the loanee, who is 12 years younger than him, into the fold.

After Holding’s arrival: Wilder could axe "excellent" Sheffield United ace

Sheffield United really did flex their muscles during the winter transfer window with a mammoth seven new signings entering the building.

Three of those fresh recruits joined right at the death on deadline day too, with left-field faces Christian Nwachukwu and Jefferson Caceres relocating to England from Bulgaria and Peru respectively, alongside forgotten Crystal Palace centre-back Rob Holding joining on loan.

The last of those new arrivals could signal the end of this Blades stalwart’s concrete space in the XI, as Chris Wilder now goes about tinkering with his side..

The Sheffield United player who could be axed after Holding's arrival

This would be a harsh alteration to make, but Holding’s arrival on the scene could displace United captain Jack Robinson in the starting lineup moving forward.

After all, despite wearing the captain’s armband with pride when selected, the ex-Liverpool man has only started 17 of his side’s 30 Championship contests this season, meaning they would be able to survive without him regularly playing in the heart of defence.

When he has been fit, however, Robinson has been a consistent performer for the Blades over the years, with seven strikes next to his name from 140 games, alongside also being a brave battler at the back.

This campaign so far, Robinson has also won 4.9 duels per league contest when starring alongside his equally formidable partner in Anel Ahmedhodžić, with Wilder once even labelling the former Reds youth product as “excellent”.

Chris Wilder

But, the 57-year-old will be well aware that Holding wouldn’t have chosen to join the Blades on loan if he didn’t think regular minutes were going to come his way, with Wilder succeeding in the past few games with some last-minute alterations that could give him the confidence to boldly start the Palace outcast straight away.

Chris Wilder's success changing the Sheffield United lineup

Indeed, United’s last win away at Derby County saw Wilder throw both Harry Clarke and Hamza Choudhury straight into the first-team fold for their debuts.

On top of that, both Ben Brereton Diaz and Tom Cannon remained in attack at Pride Park fresh off playing just one game prior for their new employers, only for all these surprise calls to pay off come full-time.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear from the numbers put in by the quartet that all four fresh faces left their mark on the 1-0 win, with both Cannon and Brereton Diaz combining well for the only strike of the day.

Whilst the new attacking pair showed off their prowess in front of goal, both Choudhury and Clarke showed off their dogged natures in helping their team grind out a hard-fought victory on the road with 15 combined duels won.

Therefore, it’s not completely out of the question that the Blades boss would gamble on introducing Holding straight into the first team fold, with the loan defender one figure who could be a capable performer at the level when up to full speed glancing at his 92 career Premier League appearances.

Holding will need to fight hard to secure a starting spot for good, however, with Robinson a rock at the back Wilder can rely on.

Permanent new role for Mainoo: Man Utd keen on late move for £42m "engine"

It has been a quiet transfer window for Manchester United, with just two notable incomings at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal in the last few days.

There have also been several outgoings on loan, with the two notable moves being Marcus Rashford, who joined Aston Villa, and Antony who made the move to Real Betis until the end of the season.

United might not be done there when it comes to a transfer business, however, and could make a late move for a midfielder.

Man United eye up new midfielder

The player in question here is Juventus and Brazil midfielder Douglas Luiz. According to a report from Sami Mokbel of the Mail, the Red Devils ‘have an interest’ in signing the £42m star.

However, Mokbel goes on to report that the ‘prospect of any agreement with Juventus [is] not close’, and with time ticking, it does not seem a guarantee that the 13-time Premier League champions will sign the player before the 11pm deadline.

Why Luiz would be a good signing

Even though a deal might be unlikely for the Red Devils, it is certainly not impossible. Ruben Amorim’s side could do with the “engine” in the middle of the park, as football statistician Statman Dave described the Brazilian.

Opportunities have been limited for the 26-year-old during his first six months or so in Turin. The former Aston Villa star has not had the game time he might have imaged when he first made the move to Juventus, having played just 19 times across all competitions, a total of just 656 minutes.

However, he is a player with bags of ability, as he showed during his time at Villa Park. The Brazilian made 204 appearances during his time in the West Midlands, scoring 22 goals and grabbing 24 assists from a number eight role under Unai Emery.

Should United sign Luiz, he could inadvertently hand Kobbie Mainoo a new long-term role in the Red Devils’ midfield under Amorim.

The England international started as a number ten in United’s recent Europa League win over FCSB, and perhaps this will be a permanent switch for the 19-year-old.

It is fair to say that the United academy graduate thrived as one of the most advanced midfielders, showing off his technical flair in the final third.

As per Sofascore, the Stockport-born sensation managed to score and assist, create three chances and complete four from five dribbles.

Luiz’s ability on and off the ball could see Mainoo move further forward permanently. Not only is he an accomplished ball-winner, but is also a progressive player in possession. In his most recent Premier League season, he made 2.44 combined tackles and interceptions per game and also completed 5.05 progressive passes per 90 minutes, as per FBref.

United could perfectly profile Mainoo whilst adding quality to their midfield in Luiz, who earns £132k-per-week, as per Capology. He has excelled as a box-to-box midfielder before, and could well do so again under Amorim.

Douglas Luiz for Juventus.

Even though this could be a tough deal to do, United might be delighted with such a transfer so late given how it improves their squad.

The Premier League heavyweights have been informed by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan that their current home is “too small” for big ambitions to be met. Todd Boehly and the rest of the club’s ownership team have faced expansion problems since completing a big-money takeover.

Chelsea can currently welcome a little over 40,000 spectators through their turnstiles. Many more tickets could be sold if the capacity at a famous west London venue could be increased. No solution to that conundrum has been found as yet.

DID YOU KNOW?

That has led to suggestions that the Blues could relocate. A move to Earl’s Court has been mooted, but no official bid for that site has been submitted as yet. Wyss concedes that Chelsea have nobody assigned to the long-running stadium project.

WHAT CHELSEA CO-OWNER SAID

The Swiss billionaire has told : “Earl’s Court would be the best option we can even think of. If it’s going to happen, I don’t know. There’s a lot of obstacles. But right now we don’t have one person who drives that project. That’s all we need. The meetings, the director’s meetings, that’s our course. Not that we have one project where I’ve said ‘I’m going to make it happen’. It’s not going to happen.”
