Man Utd seriously consider "superstar" deal after offer to sign him for £0

Manchester United are considering making a move to sign a “superstar” player after being offered his services as a free agent, according to a recent report.

Man Utd transfer news

There are over two weeks remaining in the transfer window, and it remains to be seen if Ruben Amorim will be able to make his first signing as United head coach this month. Given the recent spending, the Red Devils are very close to breaking PSR, so this means it is likely that departures need to happen before they can consider bringing in new players.

That hasn’t stopped the speculation around Old Trafford, as the Premier League side continues to be linked with several new faces. It was reported over the weekend that INEOS are set to hold talks with the agent of Goncalo Inacio in the hope of bringing the Portuguese defender to Manchester. This isn’t the first time the Red Devils have been linked with a move, as he was mentioned back in November, and the fact he has a £50 million release clause could mean a deal is easier to complete.

Meanwhile, it has also recently been reported that United want to sign Yeremay Hernanadez from Deportivo La Coruna. The winger has a £17 million release clause, and United have been left impressed by his performances in Spain. He could be seen as the player to replace Marcus Rashford, who looks set to leave at some point this month.

Man Utd seriously considering signing 24 y/o free agent

Hernandez may not be the only attacker United look to sign, as according to TuttoJuve, Manchester United are seriously considering making a move to sign Jonathan David from Lille, who will be availabkle for nothing when his contract expires this summer.

The 24-year-old, who has been dubbed a “superstar” by his international teammate Jonathan Osario, has been at Lille since August 2020, but his time at the club is slowly coming to an end. David is in the final six months of his contract for the Ligue 1 side, and unfortunately for Lille, he is expected to leave at the end of the campaign at the very latest.

A few days ago, it was reported that United were going to be offered the chance to sign David when his deal expires, and this report states this is seen as a “golden opportunity” by the Red Devils, and therefore, they are seriously considering making a move for the striker.

However, teams such as Newcastle United, Liverpool, West Ham and Juventus have also been linked with the forward, so it is not a certain signing for Amorim’s United. David being a free agent in the summer means he could also be available on the cheap this month, so it could work for United in both ways, as they look to not spend big amounts of money.

Ben Stokes hails 'benchmark' performance as England learn to adapt their aggression

Captain proud of manner in which England bounced back from Lord’s defeat

Ben Stokes wants England’s emphatic win in the second Test against South Africa to be the benchmark for his team. The manner in which England squared the series at Emirates Old Trafford, with victory by an innings and 85 runs inside three days, was a profound statement after being on the receiving end of an innings shellacking at Lord’s last week.England’s reaction to a first defeat this summer was always going to be instructive of how much this group truly believes in themselves, as well as the wider ethos handed down from Stokes and reinforced by head coach Brendon McCullum. After dismissing the Proteas on the opening day for 151, they amassed 415 for nine in their only innings before completing the rout on Saturday.Stokes hailed an “amazing team performance all round”, and seemed particularly comforted by the manner in which those around him stood tall and did not “take a backward step”. He was player of the match with his 103 and four wickets in the match, while the established pair of James Anderson (six for 62 in the match) and Stuart Broad (four for 61) also played key roles. But Ollie Robinson capped an impressive return to Test action, taking four for 43 in the second innings; Ben Foakes overcame his doubts for an unbeaten 113 and the under-fire Zak Crawley battled away for 38 from 101 deliveries to provide something of a platform for their total.Even when there was a moment of doubt on the third afternoon, as Rassie van der Dussen and Keegan Petersen offered a spirited defence throughout the middle of the day, the atmosphere on the ground was of constant optimism that they would eventually get the job done.”Cricket is about how you bat, bowl and field and I think that the way we batted, bowled and fielded this whole all game is like the benchmark of the standards of what we set,” Stokes said. “The energy throughout the whole week… When Rassie and Keegan were in that partnership, where it looked like they were able to counteract everything we threw at them, the energy that the bowlers were running in with and in the field didn’t drop.”Related

Stokes also went on to praise England’s approach with the bat, which has perhaps been disregarded as mere thrashing amid the hype of England’s four run-chases earlier in the summer, when in fact their methods involve more consideration. That latter trait was particularly evident here, with Crawley, Jonny Bairstow (49), Stokes and Foakes weathering the storms that they encountered, particularly the variable bounce.England’s run-rate was still a brisk 3.89 overall, but Stokes was heartened to see that his batters are starting to make judgement calls of their own accord, based on how things are unfolding in front of them.”I think what we did incredibly well with the bat was assess that we didn’t feel this was a wicket where we could go out and play in the way that we spoke about,” he said. “I think that is real progress for the side.”It didn’t feel like a wicket where could stand there and hit through the line because of the the variable bounce that it was offering. Some balls were going through and bouncing, some were skidding but at a good pace. But in terms of our mindset, and our intent, it was always to be positive and to get on the front foot, always look to score first.”And I think that made our decision-making a lot better. Zak really set that game up, for me and Foakesy to be able to play in the way that we did, and it certainly shouldn’t be overlooked because he absorbed the pressure in what I thought was a real positive manner.”He always looked to score whenever that scoring opportunity presented itself, but the decision-making around leaving and playing at the reversing ball, which is obviously very, very hard to do as a batter, I thought was top-class.”Stokes also saved special praise for Anderson, who ended up moving to 951 international wickets with his three for 30 on day three, moving him to 664 in Tests. He moved ahead of Australian Glenn McGrath, who previously led the way among quick bowlers with 949. Stokes believes there is still plenty more to come.”You know what you are going to get: a man who runs in, gives the batter absolutely nothing and is absolutely relentless in everything he does,” he said.”I said before this game started that I honestly can’t see when he’s going to stop. you can see him just enjoying every moment he’s out there. He is 40 but he doesn’t act like a 40-year-old. He’s been amazing around the dressing-room. The energy that he runs in with and bowls is just incredible. And he’s a testament to himself and a great ambassador for the game, especially for fast bowlers.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 25-year-old forward has struggled to convince those at Stamford Bridge that he is worth keeping around. A 2-1 derby victory over Fulham does, however, mean that a £25 million ($33m) purchase clause has kicked in.

  • WHAT TRANSFER EXPERT SAID

That is because the Blues are now guaranteed to finish higher than 15th in the Premier League table. Transfer expert reports that: "Chelsea's win over Fulham means an obligation to buy Jadon Sancho of up to £25m [€29m] has now kicked in. It is triggered providing Chelsea finish above 15th, which is now mathematically guaranteed to be the case."

Hundred done but Test series decider could yet satisfy short-form thrill seekers

Big Picture

The Hundred is done and dusted… now back to more traditionally minded short-form thrills. England and South Africa have been in hyper-drive during a compelling but erratic Test campaign – a crushing innings victory apiece to date, with neither match surviving beyond the third day. And as we head to the decider at the Kia Oval, all bets are off as to which version of either team will turn up. Not to mention for how long. And yet, arguably, the version of England that so captured the imagination in early summer has not really turned up at all in this series. Ben Stokes’ Baz-Brawlers were battered off the park by South Africa’s shock-and-awe seamers in the Lord’s Test, losing in little more than six sessions after being inserted for the first and only time in six Tests this summer. Then, when Dean Elgar erroneously chose to switch tactics at Old Trafford, it was a noticeably more chilled approach in England’s only innings, as Bens Stokes and Foakes took their time (relatively speaking) to drive home the advantage that their own bowlers had already won for them.Still, as Brendon McCullum and Co. would doubtless argue, their aggression in those early-season wins against New Zealand and India has been misrepresented. What really marks this new-look Test team out from its cagey predecessors is not the speed with which they’ve gone about their work, but the positivity – be that with the bat or in the field, with consistently attacking fields even in moments of adversity, and in attack and defence alike, hence the praise for Zak Crawley’s doughtily compiled 38 from 101 balls last week. It wasn’t an innings that will silence the wider doubts about his place, but as far as the team hierarchy are concerned, the proof is in the result that it helped to set in motion. The challenge to England’s batters is bound to be redoubled this week, however. For there’s surely no way that Elgar will make the same mistake twice, and undermine the potency of his four-pronged seam attack to shoehorn in an extra spinner. Simon Harmer’s off-the-boil display in the second Test was exacerbated by the fact that he did the bulk of his work on day two rather than days four and five, as a springy surface persistently pined for the absent left-armer Marco Jansen, whose cloud-snagging offerings would surely have been the better bet to back up the trio of early wickets from his fellow seamers. It is shaping up, therefore, as another important toss – with rain in the offing and cloud cover likely, both teams may be equally keen to bowl first on Thursday morning. Even allowing for Elgar’s stoic agenda-setting up top, South Africa’s batting is uncomfortably brittle, all the more so now that Rassie van der Dussen has been ruled out with a broken finger. Ryan Rickelton has been confirmed as his replacement, after a season of healthy returns for Northamptonshire, while Khaya Zondo may yet join him in the middle-order, where Aiden Markram has gone 15 innings and counting without so much as a fifty, and where Keegan Petersen, for all his fighting qualities at Old Trafford, is still awaiting his first Test hundred.Related

England, meanwhile, wouldn’t like their own preference for batting second to be framed as a defensive measure, but their surety of purpose when reacting to a score already on the board is palpable. And they may be all the more minded to look before they leap, given that they too will be shorn of a key presence due to injury – Jonny Bairstow’s bizarre golfing mishap has robbed the Test team of their most vibrant player of the summer, and caused the black sheep Alex Hales to be herded back to the T20 flock too.Into the mix, therefore, comes the debutant Harry Brook – the coming man, by all accounts, a player whose early-season form for Yorkshire earned him a call-up for McCullum’s very first Test squad back in May. He’s played just two first-class games since then, but he also featured in South Africa’s warm-up match down in Canterbury last month, where his pitch-perfect 140 from 170 balls propelled England Lions to a crushing innings win (they have been quite the feature of this tour). At the age of 23, he could hardly be more ready for his chance, but with the likes of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje lined up to greet him, he could hardly have asked for a more potent welcoming committee either.

In the spotlight

Fittingly it was Ollie Robinson who applied the coup de grace in the second Test, bowling Lungi Ngidi for his third wicket in the space of 13 new-ball deliveries, as England rushed to victory on the third afternoon. His second-innings figures of 4 for 43 were the best by any bowler in the match, and vindication for the decision to push him up past Stuart Broad to take over as Anderson’s new-ball partner. After an extraordinarily torrid six months, in which back spasms, indigestion, toothache and Covid had all conspired to keep him out of the Test set-up, the early evidence is that Robinson has returned leaner and meaner than ever before, with his pace consistently pushing past a sharp 85mph, and his fabled accuracy undiminished. This week is a big chance to back up that encouraging new beginning.Ryan Rickelton has a highest score of 42 in two previous Tests against Bangladesh, but he comes into the series decider as well prepared as he could hope to be, after a successful early season with Northamptonshire – a team he secured by chance when his old schoolfriend Ricardo Vasconcelos tapped him up for a short-term gig. He repaid the faith with two hundreds and four fifties in eight first-class innings, and now hopes that the conditions at The Oval prove as amenable as those at Wantage Road and Cheltenham.

Team news

In his now-familiar fashion, Stokes announced England’s team 24 hours out from the start of the match, and confirmed Brooks’ debut in place of the injured Bairstow. That is the only change to the XI that won so handsomely at Old Trafford, meaning that Matthew Potts misses out for the second match in a row, now that Robinson has reaffirmed his frontline credentials. Asked if he had been tempted to mix things up further, Stokes was emphatic in his response. “No. The way in which we’ve operated this summer has been with three seamers, me as a fourth and a spinner. The performance we put in last week, it would be pretty hard to change the team from there.”England: 1 Alex Lees, 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Ollie Robinson, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Jack Leach, 11 James AndersonRickelton steps in for his third Test cap as South Africa cover off the loss of the injured van der Dussen. Speaking ahead of the game, Elgar hinted at further tinkerings but wouldn’t be drawn on exactly what. He did, however, reference the likelihood of damp conditions, which rather implies a return for Jansen. Zondo is waiting in the wings if Markram’s struggles prove to be terminal.South Africa (possible): 1 Dean Elgar (capt), 2 Sarel Erwee, 3 Keegan Petersen, 4 Aiden Markram / Khaya Zondo, 5 Ryan Rickelton, 6 Kyle Verreynne (wk), 7 Marco Jansen, 8 Keshav Maharaj, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Lungi Ngidi

Pitch and conditions

After the hottest summer in UK history, autumn is upon us with a vengeance this week. Damp conditions are forecast throughout the Test, with an inevitability of delays, not least on Thursday when London is set for a series of showers. Paradoxically, this may only help to speed up the game as a whole, given the potency of both seam attacks in such conditions.

Stats and trivia

  • South Africa have lost four of their five Tests at The Oval since readmission, including their first post-apartheid visit in 1994 when Devon Malcolm famously took 9 for 57.
  • However, their one victory at the venue was scarcely less memorable – an innings-and-12-run trouncing in 2012, when Hashim Amla made 311 not out.
  • A South Africa victory would secure their third series win out of their last four tours of England, following 2008 (2-1) and 2012 (2-0). England won 3-1 on the team’s last visit in 2017.
  • Dean Elgar needs 66 runs to reach the 5,000 milestone in Tests.

Quotes

“The whole summer has just been great. We’ve changed the way in which England Test cricket in particular has been viewed, and one thing I’m very proud of is the way we’ve captured the imagination. It would be nice to finish the summer off and win the series as well.”
“There’s definitely going to be a winner. The styles of cricket we’ve been playing, there is definitely going to be a result. I am pretty confident there’s going to be a victor. Going into this Test one-all, it’s pretty much like a World Cup final for us.”

Imagine him & Garnacho: Chelsea in talks for "one of the best young STs"

The last few weeks have been manic, to say the least, for Chelsea in the transfer window, with countless names touted with a move to join Enzo Maresca’s squad.

However, as of yet, the Blues are yet to complete any deals for any new players, but that could all be about to change in the last few days of the month.

Alejandro Garnacho is the player who has been constantly rumoured to be of interest to the club, with Manchester United demanding £55m to part ways with their young attacker.

The Argentine could well leave Old Trafford after failing to nail down a regular starting role under new boss Ruben Amorim following his appointment a couple of months ago.

He could join the Blues before the closure of the window, providing a new dynamic to the front line, which could see him form another deadly partnership with one other player widely linked with a move to West London.

Chelsea hold talks for European talent

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea are in talks to sign Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel ahead of a late move before deadline day on February 3rd.

However, they will still face competition for his signature, with six other sides also in the race for the young Frenchman who desperately needs game time away from the Allianz Arena.

It was reported earlier this week that the 19-year-old wants to leave the Bundesliga outfit this month, with Chelsea a team who have constantly been monitoring his progress.

Tel has failed to score in any game during 2024/25, but has been restricted to mainly substitute appearances, hence why he wants to depart his current employers this month.

However, despite his lack of tangible success, the teenager has produced some impressive underlying stats, whilst also previously showcasing his talents when given an opportunity at Bayern.

Why Tel would be a superb signing for Chelsea

Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu and Christopher Nkunku are the three current centre-forward options at Maresca’s disposal for Chelsea as he looks to secure a top-four finish in his first Premier League campaign.

However, the latter wants to leave West London in the coming days for a new opportunity after his lack of starts, whilst Spaniard Guiu has only made two league appearances – often featuring in the Conference League.

As a result, Jackson is the only real senior option who the Italian could rely on after the closure of the window, highlighting the need for another striker addition.

Tel could provide solid competition to the Senegalese international, offering an immediate short-term option along with a long-term project for him to develop given his tender age.

The 19-year-old scored ten times across all competitions last season, evidence that he’s capable of starring if given the opportunity – making him a solid option for the Blues and providing Maresca added strength in depth.

Tel, who’s previously been dubbed “one of the best young strikers in Europe” by journalist David Reed, has still produced some eye-catching figures, many of which have been better than the outgoing Nkunku – showcasing what a phenomenal addition he’d be for the West London outfit.

Whilst he’s registered fewer combined goals and assists, the Bayern star has registered a higher tally of progressive carries and progressive passes per 90 in 2024/25 so far – highlighting his ability with the ball at his feet.

He’s also registered more successful take-ons, along with a higher goal-creating action rate, posing an added threat in attacking areas, to help boost the options currently on the book at the Bridge.

It’s unclear whether any deal for the talent would be a loan or permanent deal, but it’s evident from the aforementioned figures that he would be a superb signing.

The move would allow Tel to link up with Garnacho should he complete his own transfer, with the United ace likely to operate in his natural left-hand role at the Bridge.

The Argentine may have struggled to nail down a regular role since Amorim’s appointment, but stats such as 1.3 chances created and 1.1 successful dribbles per 90 could aid Tel within the final third as he looks to recapture his goalscoring form from 2023/24.

Garnacho could too benefit from Tel’s arrival, with the Frenchman completing 2.1 successful dribbles and his 87% pass accuracy also handing the fellow new addition the ammunition to show United what they’re missing if he was to leave this month.

Transfer Focus

The pair could link up together in the final third before the deadline, with both of them benefitting from one another’s move, subsequently aiding Chelsea’s hunt for a top-four finish come the end of the season.

However, another attacking addition could be on the way to Portman Road, especially after Ali Al-Hamadi’s move to Stoke City. When asked earlier this month if he would like another striker to rival Liam Delap and George Hirst, McKenna said:

“We’ll have to wait and see. Look, we’ll go to the last day and try to improve the squad in any way possible. We have enough depth in the squad. It’s only if we can add players who we think can have a really big impact on the starting 11 or the matchday squad and improve us over the remaining games. If we can do that, we’ll do it. If that’s not possible we have good depth, everyone’s on board and everyone’s hungry.

“When you do your best you can only ever be satisfied. We worked hard in the summer, we’re working hard now and we worked hard in between to try and improve the squad as much as we can.

“That’s really, really hard to do when you’re a club that’s come from where we’ve come from. It’s a real challenge and balancing act in so many different things.

“We’ve got ourselves into a position where we have good depth, a good mix of qualities throughout the squad and a group of players desperate to do well. That’s a pretty good place to be.”

They have been linked with Sheffield United youngster Ryan One in recent days, but a new experienced target has emerged.

Ipswich Town working to sign striker Bayo

According to reports in France, Ipswich Town are making a move to sign Lille striker Mohamed Bayo before February 3. The report states that Ipswich have made concrete steps to sign Bayo, as have Turkish side Besiktas, with a decision to be made on his future very soon.

Bayo is reportedly expected to leave Lille before the deadline, and a move to England with Ipswich appears to be possible.

The 26-year-old is a Guinea international and has spent his entire club career in France, coming through at Clermont Foot before his move to Lille in 2022.

In total, Bayo has scored 76 career goals for club and country and is under contract with Lille until 2027, so it will be interesting to see what kind of fee the forward may move for.

Transfermarkt value the striker at just €4m, so perhaps Ipswich could land the attacker for a similar sum, making this one to watch.

ECB Reporters Network07-Sep-2022Derbyshire 306 and 185 for 7 (Madsen 58, Godleman 43, Raine 3-24, Trevaskis 3-71) lead Durham 223 (Jones 87, Conners 4-55) by 268 runsBen Raine bowled Durham back into contention on the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match against Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground. The 30-year-old paceman took 3 for 24 in 18 overs to restrict Derbyshire to 185 for 7 in their second innings, a lead of 268.Liam Trevaskis also helped contain the promotion hopefuls by claiming 3 for 71 with his left-arm spin before bad light ended play early.Wayne Madsen led the way for Derbyshire with 58 while Billy Godleman made 43 from 141 balls, his highest score of the season in the championship.Durham’s hopes of reducing the arrears significantly lasted two overs before Oliver Gibson sliced a drive at Sam Conners and was caught by Godleman running from mid off to give the England Lions fast bowler figures of 4 for 55.The visitors suffered a major blow after three overs of Derbyshire’s second innings when their leading bowler, Chris Rushworth, left the field with a muscle strain.Given the state of the game and Rushworth’s injury, Durham did well to keep Derbyshire in check with Godleman and Luis Reece taking 23 overs to increase the lead by 50.Reece did launch Trevaskis over the long off boundary before he was caught behind playing defensively at Raine who bowled a good containing spell from the City End.Brooke Guest drove Trevaskis for another six but was caught at slip off the next ball as he tried to cut.By lunch Derbyshire were 145 ahead and Godleman showed more intent after the interval, straight driving Trevaskis for six before Madsen completed yet another 50, his 11th of the season, by guiding Raine to the third man boundary.Godleman was seven away from his first Championship half-century of the summer when he was caught on the crease by Raine to end a stand of 88 in 27 overs.Durham struck twice in the next two overs with Leus du Plooy well caught by Nic Maddinson running back to long off and Madsen caught behind dabbing at Raine shortly before bad light stopped play.Rain prevented a resumption until 4.40pm and Derbyshire’s slide continued with two more wickets falling in consecutive overs.Harry Came’s attempt to drive Trevaskis over the top ended in the hands of cover and Mark Watt got a top edge aiming a pull at a ball from Paul Coughlin that stopped on him.Anuj Dal and Ben Aitchison added another 24 from 67 balls before bad light ended play with 11 overs remaining at 5.30pm leaving the game intriguingly poised if the rain stays away on the final day.

Chris Rushworth, Durham's leading wicket-taker, makes shock departure from club

Seamer cites ‘personal circumstances’ for abrupt end to 12-year career at Chester-le-Street

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Oct-2022Chris Rushworth, Durham’s all-time leading wicket-taker, has left the club with immediate effect due to “personal circumstances”.Rushworth, 36, played a key role in the 2013 County Championship triumph with 54 wickets at 22.26, and helped to lift the Royal London Cup the following season. Against Worcestershire in May 2021, he cemented his place in the club’s history with his 528th first-class wicket, as he went past the mark set by his former team-mate, Graham Onions. He picked up a further 34 wickets at 27.35 in the season just gone, his 12th with the club, to take his overall tally to 603 at 22.61. In addition to that, he has claimed 140 List A wickets and 78 T20 wickets for Durham, whom he helped to reach T20 finals day in 2016 and another Royal London Cup Final in 2021.He stuck with the club after their receipt of an ECB bail-out in 2016 led to their relegation and subsequent points deduction, but now – in a decision that Durham said they had “reluctantly agreed to” but “fully understand” – he will be seeking new opportunities for the 2023 season.”My decision to leave Durham was far from easy, made after lengthy consideration,” Rushworth said in a statement. “But I have to state, that this decision has been made for personal reasons alone and not cricketing reasons. For that reason, I give a heartfelt thank you to Tim [Bostock], Marcus [North] and the club for allowing me to leave.”Durham is, and has always been my club, and that will continue to be the case in the future. I’ve been incredibly lucky and I’m very proud to have been able to represent the club for so long, and the memories I’ve made playing for Durham will last forever.”Sir Ian Botham, Durham’s chairman, said: “Chris is one of the best seam bowlers to grace the game in this country and to have him playing at Durham, his home county, for all these years has been an absolute privilege.”Both on and off the field he has shown an incredible amount of commitment to Durham and his work ethic for the county he loves can be seen by everyone. “It will be strange not seeing Chris out there bowling with the new ball in hand, but on behalf of myself and everyone at Durham Cricket, I would like to wish him the very best in his new chapter.”Bostock, Durham’s chief executive, added: “It’s a sad day when someone as prominent as Chris Rushworth moves on but we completely respect and understand his reasons for a fresh start.”Chris has been a fantastic mentor to our young group of players and will remain in the history books forever. Chris will always be regarded as one of the greatest Durham players and we wish him every success for the future, he is welcome back here any time he wishes.”North, the director of cricket, said: “Chris is a club legend, and his career is an example to all young cricketers of what you can achieve when you combine talent with hard work and perseverance.”Whilst we are sad to see Chris leave, we understand his circumstances and I would like to thank Chris for his dedication and service to the club. He goes with our best wishes and we look forward to welcoming him back in the future.”
