Chelsea now want £58m PSG star with the same agent as Moises Caicedo

Chelsea now want a Paris Saint-Germain star with a link to the club through midfielder Moises Caicedo, who happens to share the same agent as the Ligue 1 ace.

Chelsea considering new left-back for Enzo Maresca

While a lot of the talk has centered around Chelsea’s hunt for a new centre-back in January, leading to their serious interest in re-signing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, it is also believed that a new left-back is on the agenda for 2025.

Chelsea have held initial discussions with Palace over a deal for Guehi, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, with one report from The Sun even claiming that BlueCo lodged a low-ball bid for the England international which was rejected out of hand.

The latter claim is yet to gain traction, but what appears to be certain is that Guehi is attracting serious interest from Chelsea as Enzo Maresca scours the market for a new central defender.

Injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have exacerbated their need for another body in that area, but it is now claimed that Chelsea could even bring forward their plans to secure left-back cover.

Chelsea have been monitoring Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez in that regard, with Phillips sharing via his Substack that a new full-back is now possible for this month.

Chelsea add PSG left-back Nuno Mendes to left-back shortlist

The reporter also states that PSG left-back Nuno Mendes has found his way on to their list of targets. The Portugal international, rumoured to command a price tag of around £58 million, is out of contract in 2026 and Luis Enrique’s side may be forced into making a tough decision on his long-term future soon.

Paris St Germain's Achraf Hakimi celebrates scoring their fourth goal withNunoMendesand Marco Asensio

The 22-year-old was forced to spend the majority of last season out with a hamstring injury, and appears to still be fighting to get back to his best. Mendes has been called one of the best left-backs in world football, though, and he’d be quite the signing for Chelsea in place of the exit-bound Ben Chilwell in that position.

Phillips writes that Chelsea have identified Mendes as a potential signing from PSG, and he interestingly employs the exact same representatives as midfield mainstay Caicedo (AS1), who helped to facilitate the Ecuadorian’s marquee move to Stamford Bridge from Brighton.

That being said, a new full-back in January will apparently depend on whether Renato Veiga leaves.

“Chelsea have many names on the left back shortlist, but the latest one we are now hearing about via a top SPTC source, is PSG’s Nuno Mendes,” wrote Phillips.

“The Portuguese international left back will have a year left on his current contract come the summer of 2025. You hear me speak about opportunities all the time, and there might be one here that Chelsea are looking at. But so are many other clubs, he has a lot of interest.

“So, new left backs will depend on the Veiga situation and whether he pushes to go out to play this month or not. Remember, there are a number of Chelsea fringe players who are frustrated with their current game time and could still push to go this month.”

Man Utd now have "serious interest" in injury-prone Barcelona squad player

Manchester United are reportedly showing “serious interest” in a former Chelsea star they hope to bring to Old Trafford in January.

Manchester United latest news

Big things were expected from United following the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s replacement in November. Since, however, things seem only to have gotten worse, with Amorim losing five of his first 10 games in charge, which is the worst record of any new United manager since Walter Crickmer in the 1930s.

During United’s 2-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Boxing Day, fans could be seen leaving Molineux early, while those that stayed booed their team at the final whistle.

Speaking to the press after that game, Amorim said that he knows that his job will be on the line if results do not improve in the near future.

“I know that if we don’t win, regardless if they pay the buyout or not, every manager is in danger. I like that because that is the job,” he said.

“It’s part of football to have these difficult moments. I already knew it was going to be tough. You expect to win more games, to have players with more confidence to sell the idea and to work and improve things. At this moment it’s really hard. We have to survive to have time and then to improve the team.”

INEOS line up move for Barcelona outcast

To try and solve his side’s woes in the second half of the season, Amorim will no doubt be looking to use the January transfer window to bring in some fresh legs. According to a Monday report from Spain, United have shown a “serious interest” in Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen “in the last few hours”.

The Danish defender joined Barca on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2022, and United are now keen to bring him back to the Premier League in January specifically. The Red Devils, however, will face serious competition from Juventus for the 28-year-old. The report states that the Old Lady are leading the race for the Barca star, with manager Thiago Motta in desperate need of fresh legs in defence.

How fresh Christensen’s legs are, however, is up for debate. The Denmark international has suffered a number of injury setbacks during his career, missing well over a year of action. This season, he’s played just 26 minutes of football for Barca due to an achilles tendon injury, for which he underwent surgery in Sweden. He is expected to return at the end of January.

Given United’s recent record of signing injury-prone defenders, like Leny Yoro, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw, signing someone who not only has a poor injury record themselves, but has spent most of the last four months injured, makes little to no sense. Christensen himself has also rebuked speculation that he could be set to leave the Camp Nou.

“I can only speak about the conversations I’ve had with the club and so far they’ve only told me that I’ll recover well and that they’re looking forward to my return,” he recently told TV 2 Sport.

Raza takes 4 for 8 as Zimbabwe win T20 World Cup Qualifier

Zimbabwe will play against Ireland, Scotland and West Indies in T20 World Cup opening round in Hobart

Peter Della Penna17-Jul-2022Zimbabwe denied Netherlands their third straight championship at the T20 World Cup Qualifier as the hosts defended a total of 132 to secure a 37-run win in the final in Bulawayo. Netherlands – who have already claimed a spot at the T20 World Cup – collapsed from 45 for 2 to be bowled out for 95 in 18.2 overs as Sikandar Raza’s extraordinary tournament concluded in a Player-of-the-Match performance as he took 4 for 8.The result means that Zimbabwe will go to Hobart for the opening round of the T20 World Cup in Australia this October, where they will be in a group with Ireland, Scotland and West Indies. Netherlands will be sent to Geelong for their opening round fixtures against Namibia, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates. The top two teams in each opening round group will advance to the Super 12 stage. Both teams had produced dominant performances with the bat throughout the tournament before a low-scoring thriller unfolded on Sunday in which nobody made more than the 28 off 25 balls by Sean Williams at No. 3. But along with Regis Chakabva’s 27 off 16 balls, it was significant enough to put Zimbabwe in a defendable position.Logan van Beek struck in the third over for Netherlands, bowling captain Craig Ervine, who was attempting to back away from leg stump for a booming drive, for 10. Chakabva paid the price for trying one too many reverse shots to Bas de Leede’s medium pace and was given lbw in the fifth. Wessly Madhevere was next to go, sweeping a full toss from left-arm spinner Tim Pringle out to deep midwicket for 9 to make it 54 for 3.But Williams and Raza came together for the biggest partnership of the match, adding 39 for the fourth wicket to get Zimbabwe back on solid ground. The stand finally ended when Williams heaved a half-tracker from legspinner Shariz Ahmad out to deep midwicket.Van Beek returned in the 13th and was on a hat-trick a short time later during a double-wicket maiden. A one-handed swipe to the leg side by Milton Shumba produced a swirling top edge taken by wicketkeeper Scott Edwards. Raza crossed with the ball in the air and fell on the next delivery for 19 playing across the line to a back of a length delivery and was given lbw.Zimbabwe only scored two more boundaries the rest of the innings, but both were struck by Ryan Burl to start and finish a pivotal 10-run over bowled by Fred Klaassen in the 17th. Burl was run out for 15 in the first ball of the 18th over, and the tail was wiped out a short time later with three balls left unused.Madhevere trapped Netherlands opener Max O’Dowd heaving across the line for 12 in the third over of the chase before de Leede, the hero of semi-final win over USA, became Madhevere’s second lbw victim in the space of five balls. But Netherlands recovered well from 17 for 2 to speed along to 43 by the end of the powerplay thanks to Stephan Myburgh and Tom Cooper. That was until chaos erupted in the seventh when Cooper was run out by a direct hit from short fine leg to the non-striker’s end for 9. After hitting two fours and three sixes during the powerplay, Netherlands did not find the rope again until the 17th over as spinners Raza and Williams strangled the run rate. The mounting pressure finally burst in the 10th when Myburgh was pinned in front for 22 during a wicket-maiden for Raza. Another false sweep followed from Edwards in the 11th as he top-edged Williams to short fine leg for 7.Raza then bowled Logan van Beek in the 12th for a third-ball duck before ending his spell with wickets on his final two deliveries, bowling Pringle for 4 and pinning Klaassen in front for a golden duck. Netherlands slid from 17 for 6 to 62 for 8.A late burst of sixes from Paul van Meekeren and Teja Nidamanuru off Burl’s legspin in the 17th produced a 14-run over. But van Meekeren was dismissed by Jongwe two balls into the 18th for 10 before Richard Ngarava removed Nidamanuru in the next over to end the match.Papua New Guinea defended a total of 97 to beat USA by five runs in the third place playoff at Bulawayo Athletic Club. USA needed 11 runs to win off 12 balls with three wickets in hand before captain Assad Vala struck twice with his offspin in the 19th, including No. 6 batter Vatsal Vaghela for a top score of 29 chipping a skied drive to extra cover. Chad Soper then speared a yorker into middle stump on the first ball of the 20th to bowl Yasir Mohammad for 16 to clinch a dramatic consolation win.In the fifth place playoff, Uganda held on in almost identical circumstances, defending 102 to beat Hong Kong by four runs. Hong Kong needed six runs off three balls with four wickets in hand, but Cosmas Kyewuta bowled Zeeshan Ali for 26 and then removed Ehsan Khan first ball. No. 10 batter Aftab Hussain could only manage a single after entering to face the final ball. Jersey comfortably chased down a target of 141 with 26 balls to spare to beat Singapore by six wickets in the seventh place playoff.

Injured Bavuma ruled out; Maharaj and Miller to lead white-ball teams in England

Temba Bavuma has been ruled out of South Africa’s all-format tour of England and two T20Is against Ireland after picking up an elbow injury during the recent T20Is in India. Keshav Maharaj and David Miller have been named captains of the ODI and T20I sides respectively in Bavuma’s absence.Bavuma was hurt when diving to complete a single in the fourth T20I against India and fell on his left arm, injuring both soft tissue and bone. He will not require surgery and is expected to take around eight weeks to recover and is aiming to return for the World Cup.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The tour will mark the international comeback for Rilee Rossouw. Rossouw, the 32-year-old batter, played the last of his 51 international games in October 2016 during the T20 World Cup in India, and wasn’t considered for selection since signing a Kolpak deal with Hampshire in 2017. More recently, he has returned to play in South Africa’s domestic setup and was the leading run-scorer in the last season’s provincial T20 tournament, while he is currently third on the run-scoring chart in the Vitality Blast.Meanwhile, 21-year-old quick bowler Gerald Coetzee has received his maiden international call-up. Both Rossouw and Coetzee have been included only in the T20I squads. The T20Is against England and Ireland are the last official games South Africa are scheduled to play before the T20 World Cup. That squad will see a return for Andile Phehlukwayo, who was not on the tour to India, and Aiden Markram, who missed the India series after contracting Covid-19. Tristan Stubbs, who debuted in India, retained his place.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“The T20 format is a high priority for us at the moment,” selection convener Victor Mpitsang said in a statement. “We are looking to give opportunities to players that we are interested in seeing and working out the best combinations, while also trying to balance our desire to maintain enough consistency within the set up that the players are used to playing together as a team by the time they reach Australia for the World Cup.”That leg of the tour will be preceded by three ODIs that do not form part of the World Cup Super League and provide an opportunity to rest players. Kagiso Rabada, the fast-bowling frontman, will sit out as part of his workload management. Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, Khaya Zondo, Anrich Nortje and Lizaad Williams have all been included in the squad after not being part of the group that played against Bangladesh in March.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

All six players who had opted out of the Test matches against Bangladesh in March-April and chose to go to the IPL instead have been brought back to the squad for the longest format. Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Rabada, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, and Nortje – who has not played a Test since South Africa’s tour of West Indies last June – are all in the group.Sarel Erwee is likely to keep his place as an opening partner to captain Dean Elgar, while Zondo and Glenton Stuurman, who played against Bangladesh [Zondo as a Covid-19 substitute], have kept their spots. South Africa’s Test squad had two spinners – Maharaj and Simon Harmer, who made a comeback from a Kolpak hiatus against Bangladesh.South Africa are currently second on the World Test Championship points table and the three-Test series in England is crucial to their chances of qualifying for the final. The full tour will run from July 19 to September 12.

Best January move since Van Dijk: Liverpool plot bid for amazing defender

Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League after 22 games played, six points clear of second place Arsenal, with a game in hand. Arne Slot’s men are clearly in the driving seat now past the halfway point in the season.

The Reds also have the joint-best defensive record in the division (with Arsenal), conceding just 21 times in 22 games, averaging 9.4 shots conceded per game (the fewest in the division) and have conceded a total of 23.97 xG against them this campaign which is the second-lowest figure in the league behind Arsenal with 22.87 xG.

Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah & Virgil van Dijk

Despite having such a good defensive record this season, Slot will not want this to slip in the second half of the campaign, especially considering their tightest title challengers right now in Arsenal are also very strong at the back.

Therefore, this could be a chance for Liverpool to invest in another defensive signing, who could transform their defence, much like Virgil van Dijk did, when he signed back in January 2018.

Liverpool preparing move for new defender

According to reports from TEAMtalk this weekend, Liverpool are now considering making a move to sign Ajax defender, Jorrel Hato, this month. The 18-year-old defender has been listed as a ‘top target’ for the summer, but the Reds could fast-track their interest to improve the side now.

The report suggests as competition looks likely to increase for the Dutch defender in the summer, attracting interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea, Liverpool would like to get ahead of their competitors and avoid a fierce battle in the summer.

Hato has made 31 appearances in all competitions this season for Ajax, scoring three goals, providing five assists and totalling 2,579 minutes played.

How Hato can transform Liverpool's defence in Van Dijk fashion

Having played more as a central defender last season, Hato has found himself in a new role, playing as a left-back, who can tuck inside to become the left-sided centre-back as well.

This is becoming more and more popular in the modern era of football, using hybrid full-backs to form different shapes both on and off the ball during games.

Hato’s ability to play as a nominal full-back would allow him to replace Andrew Robertson long-term, whilst also providing cover in central defence in the present, which could be extremely handy given Ibou Konate’s recent injury woes.

When comparing Hato to both Van Dijk and Robertson, you can see how the young defender could be moulded either way, either becoming the long-term successor for Van Dijk in central defence, taking the progressive passing responsibility from the backline and winning duels, or the left-back spot, providing more defensive solidity despite not adding the same attacking output as a Robertson for example.

Hato was labelled a “magnificent talent” by Jacek Kulig just a few months ago, naming him “one of the most exciting left-footed CBs in world football.”

His versatility to become the left centre-back even when starting at left-back – as we have seen in the past at Liverpool with Joe Gomez – would make it even easier for Slot to utilise him effectively.

Liverpool managerArneSlot, Nottingham Forest's Ola Aina and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk react after the match

When Van Dijk joined the club back in 2018, his impact in the Liverpool defence went on to change the entire trajectory of their success, with the defender becoming one of the best in the world in his position.

Thus, this could be the Van Dijk-like signing of Slot’s era, transforming the Reds into regular challengers in Europe and domestically.

'Three goals won't be enough!' – Rio Ferdinand insists Real Madrid can mount stunning comeback against Arsenal despite thumping first-leg defeat

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that Arsenal's 3-0 lead over Real Madrid "won't be enough" to reach the Champions League semi-finals.

Ferdinand has claimed that Real Madrid can overturn a 3-0 deficit against Arsenal in their Champions League quarter-final second leg at the Bernabeu. Two sensational free-kicks from Declan Rice and a fine finish from Mikel Merino have put Mikel Arteta's side in an incredible position to reach the semi-finals, but Ferdinand isn't so sure.

Real, of course, boast some of the finest attacking talent in the world, with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema all at Carlo Ancelotti's disposal. Ferdinand, as such, believes they can cancel out Arsenal's advantage.

WHAT RIO FERDINAND SAID

Speaking on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, the former England defender said: "I don't think three goals is going to be enough. Look, I don't know how good this version of Real Madrid is. But I do know that when you've got the forward players that they've got, you can score three goals at home against Arsenal. If this was September or October, I'd say done and dusted, but this time of year, knockout stages, they find a little bit more."

Hendricks, Markram propel South Africa as Ireland again fall short in close finish

Ireland have run India, New Zealand and now South Africa close, but not close enough, as they slumped to their seventh successive defeat in T20Is. This time, they were asked to complete their highest successful chase and fell 21 runs short, though they were closer than that margin would suggest for much of their innings. On a ground with short straight and square boundaries, bowlers across both sides had expensive outings. South Africa posted their highest score against Ireland, though they may have wanted it to be higher still. After slipping to 45 for 2, a 112-run third-wicket stand between Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram put them in a position to push for a score of 220-plus.Gareth Delany removed the pair in successive deliveries, and Ireland had the chance to pull South Africa back. But Tristan Stubbs’ 24 off 11 balls and Dwaine Pretorius’ 21 off seven deliveries helped South Africa post 53 runs off the last four overs.South Africa were helped by an indisciplined effort from Ireland with the ball. They bowled 13 wides – and more than two extra overs as a result – and only three of their seven-bowler attack conceded at under ten runs an over.South Africa’s spinners were the only ones who did not travel, and in the absence of the injured Kagiso Rabada and the rested Anrich Nortje, will be reasonably pleased with their effort. Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi took 4 for 66 in their combined eight overs and were complemented by clever use of slower balls from Lungi Ngidi, and yorkers by Dwaine Pretorius and Wayne Parnell.Ireland were in the chase until the 17th over when Lorcan Tucker was dismissed. He put on 86 runs with George Dockrell for the sixth wicket and built on a strong powerplay while brushing aside the loss of 3 for 12 between the eighth and the tenth over.De Kock’s curious run
Apart from a blazing undefeated 92 in the washed-out third ODI against England in Leeds, it has been a quiet tour for Quinton de Kock, especially in T20Is. He has scored just 24 runs in four innings, and hasn’t looked like his usual destructive self. He had a busy but unremarkable start against Ireland too, with ones or twos scored mostly on the leg side. That is when he tried to force things, and set off for a quick single after bunting Mark Adair down the ground. Harry Tector sensed an opportunity for an intervention, ran in from mid-off, and his direct hit found the stumps at the non-striker’s end, with de Kock short of his crease. The decision was confirmed on review, and South Africa were in early trouble on 23 for 1.Hendricks in the runs again
Here is one for your next sports quiz: what do Hendricks, Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Gustav Mckeon and Rayyankhan Pathan have in common? They are the only five batters in the game to have scored four T20I fifties in succession, with Hendricks joining the list on the day.He topped up on his three against England with an easy-as-you-like-it 74 on Wednesday. Hendricks looked in control from the moment he lofted Josh Little over the covers for six, with what seemed minimal effort. He showed his power game with the pull and the cut, as also the smooth strokeplay he has built his reputation on with silken cover drives.Hendricks’ fifty came up off 32 balls, and he went on to equal his career-best of 74 from 53 deliveries.Going big on Little
Markam had come back into the XI for the third T20I against England after missing the first two games. He immediately scored a fifty in that match as well as this one. He took 13 balls to find his feet and then charged Gareth Delany and Barry McCarthy before taking on left-arm quick Josh Little. In four deliveries, Markram took 20 runs off Little, including two sixes over deep square leg, four over mid-on and four through midwicket. Markram went on to score his third successive T20I fifty, with a chance to join Hendricks in elite company if he manages as many in the next match.Lorcan Tucker swings for the leg side during an attacking 78•AFP/Getty Images

Punching in the powerplay
Ireland made as strong a statement as they could with a powerplay led by Tucker that put them much further ahead than where South Africa were at the same stage of their innings. Captain Andy Balbirnie set the tone with a four in each of the first three overs before he top-edged Wayne Parnell to Pretorius at mid-on.But despite the early loss, Tucker and Paul Stirling sent Lungi Ngidi’s second over for 17. Tucker went on to hit Parnell over mid-off for four, and over long-off for six, before taking on Pretorius’ slower ball. Tucker had scored 26 runs off the eight balls he faced in the powerplay as Ireland racked up 67, 20 more than South Africa’s total at that stage.Soon after, Tucker went on to his third T20I half-century off 25 balls and put Ireland in a position to provide South Africa with a serious challenge.Shamsi seals it
Tabraiz Shamsi went wicketless at this venue a week ago but had a much better outing today, and dismissed Ireland’s most dangerous player at a crucial moment. Tucker was Ireland’s best hope of scoring the 64 runs they needed in the last five overs and identified Shamsi as the bowler to target. He slogged a full delivery over long-on for six, and then pulled a shorter one between long-on and midwicket for four. But when he tried to slog-sweep a fuller ball, he top-edged towards short fine leg. De Kock had to make some ground but took a comfortable catch to leave Ireland’s lower order with too much to do.

Tottenham set to explore late January deal for £264k-per-week PSG player

Tottenham Hotspur are set to explore a January deal for another PSG player after missing out on a move for winger Randal Kolo Muani, who is set to join Juventus instead of Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Spurs lose race with Juventus for Randal Kolo Muani signing

The Lilywhites held talks with PSG on Monday (Fabrizio Romano), but Juventus eventually won the race for his signature, as Postecoglou and Spurs’ recruitment team now return to the drawing board in their search for another forward.

Tottenham offered "outrageous" forward with bargain £25m January price tag

While Juve and PSG are yet to announce the deal, the feeling is that it will still happen, but the latter side needs to sell one of their loan players before making it official – as they’re currently maxed out on their allocated temporary deals per season.

There is little hope of Spurs hijacking Juve’s deal at this stage, but Postecoglou’s team have their eyes on another PSG ace in £264,000-per-week defender Milan Skriniar.

Some reports have suggested that the north Londoners have held talks over signing the Slovakia international already, who was a rumoured transfer target for ex-Spurs boss José Mourinho as far back as 2020.

“They’re also been in talks with Paris Saint-Germain about taking Milan Skriniar, who’s another notable player available in this window,” said journalist Duncan Castles recently.

“PSG will let him go. They’ve allowed him to talk to other clubs. Again, not a favourite of Enrique’s. They have interest in him from Serie A clubs, and they are basically going to wait and see who gives them the best offer by the end of the window.

“So that is an option for Tottenham to get someone into their defence, who’s actually a centre back in the centre of their defence.”

Sharing an update on their interest in the 29-year-old, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told Football Insider that Tottenham’s pursuit of the player is still very much alive.

Ben Davies is set to return from injury against Everton tomorrow, according to Postecoglou in his latest press conference, with Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero also back towards the end of this month.

However, the trio’s absences have seriously exposed their lack of depth in recent weeks, and Tottenham’s fragility at the back has been a big talking point.

Tottenham are set to explore a late January deal for Skriniar as a result, with the club potentially looking to squeeze a good deal out of PSG during the final phase of the window when pressure to conclude agreements is high.

O’Rourke says to “keep an eye” on the former Inter Milan star’s exit from Paris, as it is looking highly likely with Spurs on red alert.
