Sky Sports: Ipswich Town exploring move for £95,000-p/w ace with Philogene

Ipswich Town are now exploring a shock move to sign a new face who Pep Guardiola once heralded as “oustanding” this month, a fresh report has revealed.

Ipswich Town transfer news

Currently sitting 18th in the Premier League, Ipswich Town are expected to be busy this January as they look to hand Kieran McKenna players of capable of helping the East Anglian outfit avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

The Tractor Boys have already signed defender Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta, and are in the final stages of a deal to sign Jaden Philogene in a deal potentially worth in excess of £20m.

Philogene, who has been a long term target of McKenna’s, is expected to arrive in the coming days in a bid to add more firepower to Ipswich’s attack, with McKenna’s side having managed just 20 goals so far this campaign, the third fewest in the top flight.

It follows the club failing in their pursuit of Liverpool loanee Ben Doak, who they tabled a £16m offer to sign in the opening days of the transfer window.

They are keen to add yet more firepower too, amid links to both former Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Brazilian forward Igor Jesus, while they have also been long term admirers of Middlesbrough striker Emmanuel Latte Lath, all of whom would provide cover and competition to current star man Liam Delap, who leads their goalscoring charts this campaign.

But they also need to add more cover in midfield, and to that end they have begun exploring a shock move.

Ipswich Town exploring Matic move

That comes as Sky Sports reporter Florian Plettenberg reveals that Ipswich and McKenna are now “exploring” a move to sign three-time Premier League winner Nemanja Matic from Lyon this January as they look to bolster their ranks.

Now 36 years old, Matic would bring a wealth of experience to East Anglia, having appeared over 250 times in the English top flight across spells with Chelsea and Manchester United.

And Plettenberg and Sky claim that Ipswich are now exploring a deal alongside several other sides around Europe, with McKenna knowing Matic well from their time working together at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Questions will likely be asked about his mobility, but it was just five years ago that he was the subject of effusive praise from legendary coach Pep Guardiola. “Matic is an outstanding player,” he told the media after a Manchester Derby in 2020.

The exact details of any potential deal remain unclear, but with Matic still having 18 months left to run on his £95,000 a week deal in France, a loan is unlikely, with the 6ft 3 ace having started 12 of the 14 games that he has been available for in Ligue 1 this campaign.

With top-flight experience clearly a key attribute in most of Ipswich’s targets so far this winter, Matic would certainly bring plenty of that. But, with a midfield that already struggles for mobility with Kalvin Phillips and Sam Morsy, would adding a 36-year-old Matic be a good idea?

Fabrizio Romano: Sunderland now keen to sign 21 y/o Chelsea gem in January

Sunderland are interested in completing the signing of a young Premier League player in January, according to an update from Fabrizio Romano.

Latest Sunderland news

It has been a positive season for the Black Cats to date, with Regis Le Bris’ side right in the Championship promotion battle at the top of the table. The January transfer window will offer them a chance to add depth to their squad, and they have been linked with a host of players of late.

One such figure is Glen Kamara, who is currently at Rennes after leaving Leeds United back in the summer, with a loan move to Sunderland next month mooted. The midfielder could be a shrewd addition, in terms of adding experience and quality in an area of the pitch with youngsters such as Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham in it.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris before the match

Meanwhile, Aston Villa starlet Louie Barry has emerged as a loan option for the Black Cats, with the Premier League keen to give him more experience at a Championship club after being recalled from his stint at Stockport County.

There are also possible outgoings that could happen in January, however, with local rivals Newcastle United believed to have sent scouts to watch Dan Ballard in action. Losing him would be a big blow, especially if it was to the Magpies.

Sunderland keen on signing Premier League player

According to Romano on X, Sunderland are eyeing a move for Chelsea youngster Harvey Vale in the January window ahead of him potentially leaving Stamford Bridge, but they are far from alone in showing an interest:

Vale is a talented prospect who is thought of highly at Chelsea, so the idea of the Black Cats snapping him up, whether that be on loan or permanently, is exciting.

The 21-year-old is an attacking midfielder by trade, but his versatility allows him to shine on either wing, too, while an assessment from The Bristol Post of a performance at left-back last year further showcases his ability to thrive in many positions:

“It was a surprise to see the attacking midfielder playing at left-back but he did excellently in an uncomfortable role. Solid defensively but always keen to get forward and contribute down the left flank and was unlucky not to get an assist.”

Vale has already managed seven appearances for Chelsea’s first team, which immediately outlines his pedigree, while a tally of 14 goals and 15 assists in 62 outings for the Blues’ Under-21s showed what he can offer in the final third.

Sunderland need extra depth in order to tackle potential injuries and fatigue as the season goes on, and Vale could be an eye-catching signing who gives Le Bris an extra sprinkling of quality between now and May, making this one to watch.

Bayern extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to nine points with their win on the road at Augsburg, but fans had their hands on their heads when Kane was the recipient of a strong challenge in the 58th minute that left the England captain on the floor and defender Cedric Zesiger marching down the tunnel and into the dressing room.

Kane had managed to get goal side of the Augsburg defender and was powering in on goal before being swiped from behind. The ex-Tottenham man let out an audible bellow of pain before the referee waved a second yellow card in the direction of the Swiss international. Many inside the stadium were left confused after it appeared Zesiger touched the ball before the 31-year-old's ankle.

WHAT KANE SAID

But Kane was adamant that the tackle was "dangerous" and added Cedric Zesiger "almost destroyed my ankle." He said: "It was a clear [second] yellow. He tackled me from behind on the counter. It was dangerous and I could've rolled my ankle. We also should've had a penalty after that. It's a bit swollen, but I'm used to that. I'm not worried. It's fine, it hurts a bit, but it should be fine for Tuesday."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish made his senior England bow in 2020 and has reached 39 caps, scoring four goals along the way. The 29-year-old has been informed those numbers would be considerably higher had he not made a controversial switch between green and white.

  • WHAT ANDY TOWNSEND SAID

Ex-Ireland and Villa star Andy Townsend has told , who offer the latest Premier League odds: “Jack Grealish would have double the international caps if he picked Ireland over England. I've never agreed with the FIFA stance in the way that you can play friendly matches for one country, but because you haven't appeared in a tournament qualifier or tournament game you could then decide you want to go and play for someone else.

“That's not how I believe it should be. No one is forcing anyone to play international football. They're all grown men capable of understanding and making decisions for the here and now that are going to impact you long-term. I don't think you should be allowed to change. That's just an opinion. The rules are what they are.

“Jack would definitely have had a ton more caps playing for Ireland and he and Declan Rice would have absolutely been pivotal at the forefront of anything that's happened with Ireland. The two players would argue that the Irish team over the last few years has been really poor and it has. But maybe with their inclusion, it would have been a lot healthier.”

Newcastle have made move to sign £12m giant ahead of Chelsea and Man City

Newcastle United have now made a move to beat a host of Europe’s elite clubs to an elite young talent as they look to back Eddie Howe in the transfer market this winter, it has been reported.

Newcastle want reinforcements

Though their recent run of form and 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Arsenal underlined the undeniable talent in Newcastle United’s squad, they remain on the hunt for new faces.

Seven successive wins across all competitions have propelled the Magpies up to fifth in the Premier League, but Howe is still not happy with his squad.

The former Bournemouth boss is clearly still keen to add another defender to his ranks despite raiding the Cherries for out-of-contract Lloyd Kelly over the summer, with his efforts to add fresh blood at the back having been thwarted at almost every turn in recent months.

3 in, 3 out? 6 players who could join or leave Newcastle United in January

Newcastle United will be looking to do some transfer business this month.

ByRoss Kilvington Jan 8, 2025

Tosin Adarabioyo was set to join the Magpies before Chelsea hijacked the move over the summer, before Newcastle were involved in protracted and ultimately unsuccessful negotiations to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace.

Ahead of the January transfer window, Howe’s side were linked with a move to sign impressive Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov, but the Uzbek defender now seems close to joining Manchester City, a move that will again leave Newcastle empty-handed in their hunt for a new defender.

Now, they have turned their attention to another future gem, according to a fresh report, as they look to beat clubs around Europe to his signature.

Newcastle in talks over £12m defender

That is according to Italian outlet TuttoMercato, who claim that Newcastle have now joined the race to sign Juma Bah from Real Vallodolid this January in a bid to bolster their defence.

The 18 year-old defender, who stands at 6 foot 5 and may still be growing, is on loan from Sierra Leone side AIK Freetong, and has featured 10 times for his temporary club in La Liga this season, drawing plenty of admiring glances and being labelled “quality” by his side’s official X account.

Juma Bah for Real Valladolid.

His form has caught the eye of Inter Milan, the report claims, while it is added that Premier League quartet “Manchester City, Chelsea, Bournemouth and Newcastle have made moves on Bah”.

Any deal would involve Valladolid having to buy Bah first, before then selling him on at what would likely be a substantial profit, with the report adding that Valladolid are looking for €15m (£12m) to let him leave this January, though it is added that there is some room for negotiation on this fee.

Still just 18 years old, the defender would certainly be a signing for the future rather than one able to make an immediate impact at St James’ Park, but could fit into Newcastle’s policy of trying to sign players before they become superstars, something that they have done to excellent effect so far in Howe’s regime.

Not just Engels: 135-touch Celtic star now has to start in the Old Firm

The chaos continues elsewhere in Glasgow, but for Scottish champions Celtic, it’s all looking rather rosy right now, following yet another dominant 4-0 victory – this time over St Johnstone.

Just a matter of days on from seeing off Motherwell by the same scoreline, the Hoops were in rampant mood to extend their lead at the summit to a mammoth 14-point advantage.

Goals from Nicholas Kuhn and Daizen Maeda, either side of a Kyogo Furuhashi brace, proved the difference for the imperious hosts at Parkhead, with that fine victory made all the sweeter amid events at Fir Park.

With Rangers slipping to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon, it is Brendan Rodgers’ side who are in full control heading into Thursday’s Old Firm derby, albeit with complacency needing to be avoided even with their hefty margin at the top of the Premiership table.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

Ahead of that eagerly-anticipated clash, Rodgers has been left with a real selection headache following a raft of standout performances, with Arne Engels among those who perhaps should be given the nod at Ibrox.

Arne Engels' game in numbers vs St Johnstone

Celtic’s club record signing has been rotated in and out of the starting lineup in recent weeks, having notably been forced to settle for a substitute berth in the League Cup final triumph over Rangers. That said, as his assist for Kuhn showcased in that Hampden thriller, the Belgian’s creative influence is beginning to blossom in a Celtic shirt.

Indeed, after scoring against Well last time out, the former Club Brugge man was again heavily involved in proceedings on Sunday, notably chalking up three key passes and completing 100% of his attempted dribbles from his midfield berth, as per Sofascore.

That attacking flair was particularly evident for the home side’s third goal of the game, with Engels delivering a delightful whipped cross into the path of that man Kyogo, who duly converted for his second in a matter of minutes.

A word must also be said for Paulo Bernardo, with the Portugal U21 international – who registered a stunning, threaded assist for Maeda – slotting in comfortably in place of the rested Callum McGregor.

Yet, with the former Benfica man lasting the full 90 minutes, it would appear that Engels and Reo Hatate will deservedly get the nod alongside McGregor in midweek.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Now boasting 13 goals and assists in just 24 games for his new club to date, the £11m man is beginning to repay that hefty transfer fee. He’s also not the only summer signing who’s making their mark…

The Celtic star who has to start the Old Firm

Greg Taylor may have got on the scoresheet in the showpiece triumph earlier this month, yet it was a largely ropey showing from the Scotland international, having been particularly culpable for Nedim Bajrami’s strike after a slack cross-field pass.

Now with just a matter of months left to run on his existing deal, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 27-year-old, with it perhaps time for Rodgers to put his faith in young Alex Valle over an extended period.

The promising Spaniard may only be on loan himself – while whispers have touted a potential early return to parent club Barcelona – yet on current form, the Glasgow giants should be doing everything they can to keep him around for the foreseeable.

As for the short-term, the 20-year-old may have played his way into Thursday’s starting lineup amid a quietly impressive display against the Saints, a point categorised by his remarkable haul of six key passes from left-back – by far the most of any player for either side.

Fresh from registering an assist off the bench earlier this week, the young defender made the most of his recall to the starting XI, having taken 135 touches and recorded a pass accuracy rate of 87%.

Yes, the on-loan starlet lost the ball on 20 occasions, but that seemingly signified his forward-thinking intent and desire to make things happen from a defensive berth, with it looking as if Celtic have a real gem on their hands.

The likelihood is, however, that Taylor – who was an unused substitute at Celtic Park – will now be recalled at Ibrox, although Valle, like Engels, has surely done enough to warrant another starting berth.

Celtic now eyeing bid to sign tricky new 22 y/o forward – reliable reporter

Celtic are considering a move to sign a tricky new 22-year-old attacker, according to reliable reporter Scott Burns.

Celtic targeting January signings

The Hoops are flying high at the top of the Scottish Premiership, however, Brendan Rodgers and those behind the scenes at Celtic Park are still looking to make multiple January additions.

One of those likely to arrive at Parkhead in 2025 is former defender Kieran Tierney. The left-back is surplus to requirements at Arsenal and looks set to sign a pre-contract agreement with Celtic, who also want to seal a loan deal for the remainder of the campaign.

Talking about the rumours to Tierney, Rodgers recently said: “Yeah, we’ll always be linked with top players, and especially players that are one of us.

“Kieran was an instrumental part of a really, really successful period when I was here, and his talents then took him on to another challenge in the Premier League. So, yeah, we’ll be linked with lots of names, Kieran obviously, naturally because of his situation. But for us, we’ll only ever tell you when we sign a player, once he’s signed.”

Alongside Tierney, though, a brand-new attacker is also on the to-do list at Parkhead, with a whole host of names mooted as targets amid the rumours linking Luis Palma and Kyogo Furuhashi with moves away.

Brondby’s Mathias Kvistgaarden, Sarpsborg 08’s Sondre Orjasaeter and Aston Villa’s Louie Barry are some of the forwards linked with moves to Celtic.

More recently, Real Valladolid’s £8.5m-rated winger Raul Moro is another versatile forward who the Hoops appreciate, and now, a fresh name has emerged on Celtic’s radar.

Celtic have eyes on new attacking target – Scott Burns

According to Burns, writing for The Daily Record, Celtic are eyeing a move to sign BK Hacken star Zeidane Inoussa alongside interest from French side St Etienne.

The reliable reporter states that both Celtic and St Etienne have ‘scouted the Swedish under-21 star regularly in recent weeks’. Inoussa is now on the radar as Rodgers looks for another option behind Maeda, making it his priority position to bolster this month.

He has been on the books with SM Caen in France, Valencia in Spain and both Brommapojkarna and BK Hacken in Sweden. Inoussa has caught the eye in recent years of TFA Scouted, who labelled him as a skilful and energetic attacker who can be unpredictable.

“Zeidane Inoussa is a right-footed winger who operates from the left wing but has the proficiency to operate from the right as well. He is a skillful player with energetic impact on the field. Profiles as a modern-day winger who is tricky dribbler and has unpredictability in his game.”

Amar Virdi, the Surrey offspinner, has joined Somerset on a short-term loan, and will be available for the club’s trip to face Lancashire at Southport, starting on Monday.Virdi, whose prowess has earned him England Lions recognition, has been surplus to Surrey’s requirements this season, with their new head coach, Gareth Batty, preferring to hone the allround skills of Will Jacks as the team’s premier offspinner. Now, however, with Jack Leach unavailable to Somerset due to his England involvement, Somerset’s director of cricket, Andy Hurry, has seen Virdi, 23, as the ideal stand-in.”Jack Leach is unavailable for the match against Lancashire, and with Amar currently not playing First XI cricket, we felt he could add real balance to our team at Southport,” Hurry said.”Having previously worked with him within the England U19 programme, and with Jason having worked with him with England Lions, we have a strong awareness of his ability with the ball and his character. He is a quality spinner with genuine international aspirations, and we are delighted to be able to welcome him into our environment.”Virdi made his County Championship debut against Essex in 2017 and featured in 40 first-class matches to date, claiming 123 wickets at an average of 29.73.
