The European governing body has confirmed that the match will be held at RCDE Stadium, the home of La Liga side Espanyol. The reverse fixture of the qualifier will be played at Premier League club Aston Villa's home ground, Villa Park, on September 6.

Swepson's wicket wait: 'I'm not going to lie, it plays on your mind'

The legspinner played a key role in Galle after toiling on the Pakistan tour

Mitchell Swepson has frankly admitted doubts crept into his mind during his 514-ball wait for a third Test wicket.Swepson justified his selection as Australia’s second spinner in the team’s series-opening win over Sri Lanka, taking five wickets for the match in Galle. But it wasn’t before a harsh introduction to Test cricket. He took 2 for 266 across his maiden two Tests on flat Pakistan wickets, including a barren 81.4 overs without a wicket to end the series.”I’m not going to lie, it plays on your mind,” Swepson said.  “It definitely creeps in. ‘Why aren’t I taking wickets? What am I doing wrong here?’Related

Australia have eye on India as building blocks slot into place

“At the same time in Pakistan I know it was about trying to stay effective. A big focus of ours was trying to control the tempo of the game. That was what I had to bring my mind back to if the results weren’t at my end.”Swepson is expected to hold his spot as Nathan Lyon’s spin partner for the final Test in Galle starting Friday, holding out a fit-again Jon Holland. His success in Sri Lanka has been a long time in the making. He went on an academy tour to India in 2015, and was also a member of Australia’s Test squad for the 2017 Test series in that country. He has since worked on developing his bowling for sub-continent conditions, well aware that is where his chance would come. Swepson has tended to bowl with a “squarer” seam in Sri Lanka than he does Australia, forgoing some drift but picking up more natural variation in his spin.”You’ve got to adapt to the surface,” Swepson said. “Over here I’ve found that different paces react differently off the wickets. It’s a matter of flight, it’s a matter what shape you put on the ball, the angle of the seam.”I found it quite effective in my first spell bowling with a squarer seam, not as over the top of the ball. Some were skidding past the left-hander’s edge, some were ripping into his gloves.”Swepson is happy to push the cause for Australia playing two spinners back home this summer, having not picked a wristspinner at home since Brad Hogg in 2007-08. But the 28-year-old is more realistically accepting his next chance will come in India in February.”I’ve obviously got one eye on India. That’s definitely a goal of mine. And a goal of this group is to get a series win over there,” he said.”I love bowling with Gaz [Lyon]…it’s great having an offspinner and a legspinner working in tandem [spinning it different ways]. Again, biased opinion of mine. But I think it’s something we don’t see enough of in cricket.”

Even better than Gordon: Newcastle chasing audacious £68m January signing

Newcastle United have made headway over the past month and are now within touching distance of the Carabao Cup final. Winning the domestic trophy and ending a long-stretching barren spell would be the perfect endorsement of Eddie Howe’s tenure.

However, those with knowledge of Newcastle and the gains made over the past three years will also stress that Howe should not be defined by his success in this one stream of the season.

St James’ Park is on its way to becoming a goliath of the English game once more, and the Magpies are beginning to get more and more ambitious in the transfer market.

Newcastle hoping to make statement signing

As per L’Equipe, Newcastle are a surprise name in the race to sign Khvicha Kvaratkskhelia this month, though Paris Saint-Germain are firm favourites in the race for the £68m-rated Napoli star.

PSG might be in the driving seat but they have reservations concerning the finances that would be involved and this could open the door to teams like Newcastle.

The Times recently reported that Liverpool are perhaps the leading contender from England, but with the feel-good factor mounting on Tyneside, sporting director Paul Mitchell might just be convinced to have a pop at one of the game’s most coveted wingers.

What Khvicha Kvaratskhelia would bring to Newcastle

Newcastle’s seven-match winning streak has pushed Howe’s side toward silverware, yes, but it’s also resurrected their Premier League campaign, thus reopening the door to Champions League qualification.

Napoli forwardKhvicha Kvaratskhelia.

As they continue to improve, Newcastle’s pull power strengthens too – why wouldn’t Kvaratskhelia be enticed by joining a fluent strikeforce containing Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon?

Kvaratskhelia, 23, would probably fancy himself better than Gordon, who won United’s Player of the Year for 2023/24. Indeed, the Georgia sensation has posted 59 goal contributions from 109 matches for his Naples side, beating Victor Osimhen to the Serie A Player of the Season for 2022/23 as Napoli clinched the Scudetto.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

While Kvaratskhelia would have to jockey for the left-wing role that Gordon typically occupies, he’d arguably be an upgrade. Indeed, as his former Rubin Kazan boss Leonid Slutsky has claimed, the in-demand Georgian “could play in any starting XI in the world”.

Furthermore, Gordon has played across different roles regularly for the Magpies and this will be something that Howe will consider.

Kvaratskhelia is an elite dribbler and an intelligent and slippery customer, but it’s his clinical output that could be perfect for Newcastle, alleviating the burden that Isak carries. As per Sofascore, he’s actually only missed 19 big chances in the Italian top flight since joining in 2022, clinically scoring 28 goals.

Gordon, conversely, has scored 17 Premier League goals for the Toon since leaving Everton in January 2023, though he’s missed 21 big chances in that timeframe.

Anthony Gordon scores for Newcastle

Gordon is a fantastic player, one of Newcastle’s finest, and he will play a central role in the seasons to come. However, Howe’s project would only hit the next level with Kvaratskhelia in the mix. As talent scout Jacek Kulig put it, he’s simply “unstoppable”.

It’s a dream – some might say far-fetched, but the mere fact that United are in the running bespeaks the ambition and confidence in the direction headed.

Antony joined Manchester United in the summer of 2022 from Ajax with plenty of anticipation surrounding him, however, the Brazilian has failed to live up to his hype at Old Trafford under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim. As such, he left the Red Devils on loan to Real Betis in January having been sidelined by the Portuguese coach.

Antony has found a good vein of form at Real Betis over the last two months, with the Brazilian already making eight goal contributions for Manuel Pellegrini's side. Former Manchester United coach Meulensteen has now urged Antony to remain with Los Verdiblancos past this season.

    WHAT MEULENSTEEN SAID

Speaking to AOS, Meulensteen said: "Antony has no future at Manchester United. If I was him, I’d stay at Real Betis, without a doubt. He’s never really lived up to the expectations or the price tag at United, but he’s found his feet in Spain. He seems to be a lot happier playing football and in life generally at Betis – which is the most important thing.

"If he returned to Manchester, he’d fall straight back into the rut he was in before he left, which wouldn’t be good for anybody. I can’t see him returning under any circumstance; it’s probably best for all parties that he joins Betis on a permanent deal."

Over the course of the season, a number of questions were raised about De Bruyne's desire to leave City this summer, as talks of a contract extension remained off the radar. However, Guardiola has now revealed that it was indeed City's decision not to give the Belgian a new deal, and the Catalan tactician revealed the difficulty of breaking the news to the Premier League legend.

Speaking to the media, Guardiola said: "The decision has been made for the club, and the club is the club. Me, Txiki [Begiristain, sporting director], and the club, so this is what it is. It was not easy for me to tell him it won’t continue.

"The last year and a half, he was out injured because he gave everything for the club. Everything he had in his body and his mind, he’s done it, so there’s no doubt about it."

Arsenal, meanwhile, dropped points against Brighton last weekend and failed to capitalise on Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at home to Man United. They’ll also have to contend with Newcastle’s superstar striker Alexander Isak, who is in the form of his life, so they’ll be no easy customers tonight.

In the background of this pivotal clash, interim sporting director Jason Ayto is reportedly looking at opportunities for the January transfer window. Fabrizio Romano says that Arsenal are targeting Feyenoord winger Igor Paixao, as the club eye up alternatives to the injured Bukayo Saka, and Arteta continues to suggest that a new signing this month is possible.

The Spaniard says that his side are increasingly attentive to potential transfer openings before deadline day on February 3, however, their focus is on contending with their current options.

“Whatever is in the market, we’re very alert,” said Arteta on Arsenal signing players this month. “But the priority is working with the players that we have at the moment and tomorrow night, which is a big night for us. It’s not a yes, it’s not a no.”

As well as out wide, Arsenal are facing a future without midfield veterans Jorginho and Thomas Partey. Both players are out of contract at the end of this season as thing stand, prompting the north Londoners to express an interest in Sunderland star Jobe Bellingham.

Arsenal set sights on signing Sunderland midfielder Jobe Bellingham

According to Football Transfers, the younger brother of Real Madrid superstar Jude has admirers at N5, and Arsenal have scouted the English midfielder on numerous occasions across 24/25 – who has impressed the club with his versatility and assurance.

Arsenal have “set their sights” on signing Bellingham from Sunderland, with Arteta personally earmarking the addition of a player who possesses youth and dynamism as a “top priority” for the club.

The 19-year-old is rumoured to command a £20 million price tag, but Arsenal are not his only suitors as clubs from across the Premier League take note of his exploits in the Championship.

“Jobe is so powerful. He wants to affect the game, he had good quality today,” said Black Cats boss Regis Le Bris after Sunderland’s 2-1 win over Norwich.

“It’s not a big surprise for us but you have to do it on the pitch. He did very well today to score the second goal. I don’t have to say to Jobe, ‘you can score’, it’s just now a question of his position. We talk now a lot about positions on the pitch because if he can manage different situations, he can be involved in the build-up, in the high pressure and low pressure.

Sunderland 'sJobeBellinghamin action

“But if you want to affect the score properly, the opposition has to be a little bit higher on the pitch. We spoke a lot about this position for our eights, especially for Jobe because out of possession he plays as a six. So it’s not easy to find the right balance with the offensive part of the game.

“He played the first game of the season higher on the pitch like with two strikers, then as a midfielder. It was easier to find the right position and adjustment. I think he’s doing well. He learns so very quickly.”

£41m centre-back now open to leaving club after Tottenham express interest

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly entering the market for new centre-backs in January, and one target is now becoming more tempted to leave in 2025 as Spurs add him to their shortlist.

Spurs target new centre-back after triple injury blow

As things stand, Radu Dragusin is manager Ange Postecoglou’s only natural senior central defensive option right now – with trio Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies all sidelined through injury.

Postecoglou has been forced to deploy versatile summer signing Archie Gray at centre-back to partner Dragusin in the last few games as a result, and while the teenager’s done well in a very unfamiliar role, Tottenham’s current injury crisis has exposed the lack of depth in their squad.

Speaking ahead of their blockbuster Premier League clash at home to Liverpool, Postecoglou dropped a transfer hint and suggested that Spurs could go into the market for more experienced players to complement the likes of Gray.

“Moving forward, we probably need to err on the side of getting a little bit more experience, just to help the group, because we’ve got very few at that kind of sweet spot in terms of ages,” said Postecoglou in his latest press conference.

“And we want to give the guys in their teens or early twenties the opportunity to keep growing. We need to make sure we put quality around them, so how we allocate the next resources may shift a little bit. But I’d hate to be sitting here now and saying we had an opportunity to sign Archie Gray at 18, and we passed it up because maybe we could have got a player who helps us for a couple of years.”

Postecoglou has held recruitment meetings with technical director Johan Lange ahead of January, by his own admission, and reports suggest that Spurs could go after a fresh centre-back option.

There are many potential options for Spurs in this regard, with French newspaper L’Equipe claiming that Tottenham have entered the race for RC Lens starlet Abdukodir Khusanov, who his club are attempting to sell in the winter as they attempt to raise funds.

Postecoglou has also asked Tottenham to consider a move for Getafe’s Omar Alderete, as per Spanish media sources, and they’re also believed to hold an interest in Feyenoord star David Hancko.

David Hancko open to leaving Feyenoord as Tottenham eye move

The Slovakia international was a key player for Arne Slot during his time at Feyenoord, and has continued to be a mainstay, but he’s now considering a fresh chapter away from the Eredivisie side.

That is according to TEAMtalk and journalist Rudy Galetti, who report that Hancko is open to leaving Feyenoord as Tottenham express an interest in signing him.

This transfer appears to be more likely for the summer as things stand, though, and despite contrary reports of a reduced price tag, TT write that Hancko will cost around £41 million to sign in 2025.

Slovakia'sDavidHanckoin action

That being said, the 48-cap star has a glowing reputation and could be worth the investment, especially if Postecoglou is after proven reinforcements at the back.

“He is so stable and can basically do anything. I just think he is a top defender all-round,” said ex-Feyenoord ace Tim de Cler to SoccerNews.

“I think he can easily handle a club just below the top six in Europe. Then I’m talking about a club like Atlético Madrid or Liverpool. He can certainly handle that.”

England search for answers at Lord's against high-flying India

Big picture

Happy anniversary, England! Yes, by the time the second ODI against India gets underway at Lord’s on Thursday, it will be three years to the day since the hosts’ crowning glory in the 2019 World Cup final. Three turbulent years, it has to be said, given the onset of the pandemic and the chaos that accompanied it; this time last year, in fact, a scratch team led by a half-fit Ben Stokes was putting the finishing touches to a 3-0 series win over Pakistan. As omens would have it, it is traditional to be given a gift of “leather” to mark one’s third anniversary… a prospect that England might not be overly grateful for, if that gift is to be delivered once again at a 90mph velocity by the peerless Jasprit Bumrah. For there have been few thumpings to match the one that India handed out to the world champions at The Oval on Tuesday; and such is Bumrah’s reputation that if England had to replay their performance in perpetuity – batting first in swinging conditions against a bowler at the peak of his powers – few would be mad enough to expect a different result.Related

  • India move to third in ODI rankings after beating England

  • Moeen plays down panic, but England's ODI rust is plain to see

No prizes for guessing what Jos Buttler will be keen to do at Lord’s then, should he be fortunate enough to win the toss on what promises to be another sweltering day of cricket. Chasing down totals was a hallmark of Eoin Morgan’s class of 2019, and it has been the defining characteristic of the Test team’s Bazball revolution too.Set them a number, and let them cut loose. It is nominally a new era with Buttler full time at the helm, but now doesn’t quite seem the moment to tinker with a proven formula.1:25

Buttler: ‘No need to panic at all’

For India, it was all so contemptuously simple that it is hard to know quite what they learnt from the experience; Bumrah’s mastery, after all, isn’t exactly an unknown factor. Shreyas Iyer, handed a chance at No. 3 by Virat Kohli’s groin strain, didn’t even make it to the middle, while Shikhar Dhawan’s marked lack of fluency at the top of the run chase still couldn’t prevent him from contributing to his 18th century stand with Rohit Sharma – and, remarkably, their fourth in just six ODI partnerships at The Oval. What is clear, however, after an ominously comprehensive series win in the T20Is – one in which their finest performance, from Suryakumar Yadav, came in a losing cause at Trent Bridge – is that India’s white-ball fortunes are on precisely the sort of upwards curve that world-beating teams expect to reach in the final months of any given World Cup cycle. With the 20-over and the 50-over versions both looming large, England’s challenge is to prove they are not themselves falling off the other side of the graph.

In the spotlight

Ducks are nothing new for Jason Roy – he began his ODI career with a first-baller back in 2015, and has now amassed 17 across 158 innings in the two white-ball formats, a tally exceeded among Englishmen by just two batters: Buttler and Eoin Morgan (both with 18). And the calibre of those colleagues rather confirms the extent to which Roy’s stat is a badge of honour – proof of his eternal willingness to go hard from the get-go, to risk embarrassment in search of the reward of quick runs.Such are the reasons why Roy was arguably Morgan’s favourite team-mate, a player who epitomised more than any other the selflessness that his white-ball team needed to become world-beaters. This, however, is the start of a new epoch under Buttler and Matthew Mott, and notwithstanding his century in the Netherlands last month, Roy knows that with a wealth of white-ball talent bubbling up from the Lions squad, he is under pressure for his place like never before.Prasidh Krishna has a chance to make the third seamer’s role his own ahead of a home World Cup•PA Photos/Getty Images

Bumrah is clearly the man to watch in India’s ranks – try taking your eyes off him when he gets the ball in his hands on Thursday. But there is arguably more to be learnt about Prasidh Krishna in the remainder of this series. He didn’t have a whole lot to do at The Oval, but did it pretty well regardless, holding his nerve as Moeen Ali attempted a counterattack, and belying his lanky frame to pick off a fine return catch to quash England’s remaining hope. That was his eighth ODI appearance, but only his second overseas after the one against South Africa in Cape Town earlier this year. And after a four-for on debut against England in March 2021, already his stats are stacking up – 19 wickets at 17.21, and an economy rate of 4.86 speak of a bowler with both penetration and control – and at the age of 26, he has a chance to make the third seamer’s role his own ahead of a home World Cup in 15 months.

Team news

Why change a winning team? Victory by ten wickets and with 188 balls to spare suggests a side in reasonable working order. There is no news as yet on Kohli’s groin niggle, while Arshdeep Singh – who missed the same game with an abdominal strain – wasn’t exactly missed in the bowling ranks. Many of the same names who put the hammer down in the T20Is are lined up in the middle order, awaiting their chance to lay another marker. However, should Kohli be fit to return, he is likely to replace one of Iyer and Suryakumar.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Shreyas Iyer, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Mohammed Shami, 9 Jasprit Bumrah, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Yuzvendra ChahalWhy change a losing team? The reunion of England’s Fab Five fell resoundingly flat at The Oval, but few could argue that the incumbent top seven – up to and including Moeen – are not currently the first-choice picks for next year’s World Cup.So that leaves the bowlers, and what could any of them prove while defending a target of 111? The reintroduction of Sam Curran, potentially in place of Craig Overton, would be one plausible tweak, given he is still being eased back to action after his back injury. But reboot and reload seems an equally fair bet, and hope for a few more handy pointers in the next two games.England (probable): 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 6 Liam Livingstone, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 David Willey, 9 Craig Overton/Sam Curran, 10 Brydon Carse, 11 Reece Topley

Pitch and conditions

Another scorcher is in prospect on Thursday – bright sunshine and temperatures pushing 27 degrees Celsius – and given that lateral movement at Lord’s invariably depends on cloud cover, the pitch is liable to be another hard, true road. Plus, with sunset not until after 9pm, the floodlights will not be a factor. Win toss and… chase? It is how these teams prefer to roll.

Stats and trivia

  • England’s ten-wicket loss at The Oval was the sixth in their ODI history, and their first since the World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka in Colombo in March 2011.
  • India have won four of their eight previous ODIs at Lord’s – including, famously, the World Cup final against West Indies in 1983 – although England are undefeated in their last three meetings since 2004. That includes a Duckworth Lewis-induced tie in 2011, when Ravi Bopara was run-out for 90 off the final ball before rain curtailed the match.

“We have lost a few games at the moment but that is good for us going forward, and closer to a World Cup, we will start winning. We want to win now but you don’t want to win all games. Sometimes you learn more from losing games.”
Moeen Ali puts a positive spin on England’s first-ODI hammering“Personally, my plan is to just keep it simple. That is my mantra. You only have to think if the wickets are different. Otherwise, if you repeat the same things over and over again, chances of success are that much more.”
