He’s perfect for Amorim: Ruud must unleash Man Utd’s "pressing monster"

Ruud van Nistelrooy has done a good job as Manchester United’s interim manager so far. Although the football has not been the most inspiring, he is getting results on the board, something Erik ten Hag simply failed to do for many months across the past two seasons.

So far, he has two wins and a draw, beating Leicester City in the Carabao Cup and Greek side PAOK in the Europa League, and drawing against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea. It has been a very respectable stint at the helm for the Red Devils legend.

The Dutchman has managed to get some players firing, amid the impending arrival of Ruben Amorim, with young winger Amad the star of the show against PAOK. However, a few players have continued to struggle, including Manuel Ugarte, who has had a tough start to life at United.

Ugarte’s United career

It was an expensive deal when the 13-time Premier League champions brought Uruguay international Ugarte to the club in the summer. They paid former club Paris Saint-Germain £42m up front, with the deal potentially rising as high as £50.5m.

It has certainly not been an easy start to the season for the 23-year-old. He has played just ten times so far for the Red Devils and struggled to get any kind of chance under former boss Ten Hag. In total, the midfielder has played 587 minutes across all competitions and has been an unused substitute three times.

It is certainly an odd start to life in that famous Red shirt for the Uruguayan. His stats on Sofascore from the Premier League so far show just how disappointing Ugarte has been. In five games, which included two starts, he has won just 1.8 tackles and 2.8 ground duels per game.

So far, it remains up in the air as to whether Ugarte was a good signing for the Red Devils. He has not imposed himself as of yet, and it feels like there is a lot to be desired with the 23-year-old still.

With that in mind, Van Nistelrooy could decide to shake things up in his final interim game and drop the midfielder from the starting lineup. To replace Ugarte, the Dutchman could turn to someone else who has had a tough time of things at Old Trafford so far.

The Man Utd star who could replace Ugarte

The player in question here is Red Devils number seven Mason Mount. The England international has become something of a forgotten man at United and has sadly seen his career at the English giants plagued by injuries.

Manchester United player Mason Mount

The 25-year-old midfielder has played just 26 games for the Old Trafford club, despite joining in the summer of 2023. He has had several injuries, including a calf issue last season and a hamstring injury in 2024/25, which has simply hampered his progress.

He has scored just once, a late goal against Brentford last season that was seconds away from being a winner.

Sadly for Mount, it has been a tough season once again. The aforementioned hamstring issue has kept him out for much of this term, and he has managed just six appearances in all competitions, notching up 224 minutes.

However, he got a few minutes under his belt against PAOK on Thursday, as United look to build up his fitness. Van Nistelrooy may well decide to take a gamble and start him against Leicester on Sunday ahead of Ugarte.

Not only would the Chelsea academy graduate bring quality on the ball into the midfield, but he brings great value out of possession.

Described as a “pressing monster” by football statistician Statman Dave, the midfielder is a relentless runner and is quite tenacious in the middle of the park, looking to constantly win the ball back off opponents by harrying them.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

It is for such attributes that it is believed Mount is among those who could enjoy something of a revival under new boss Amorim, with GIVEMESPORT suggesting that there is hope the Englishman – and others – can ‘[profit] from his fresh demands’.

That belief is also unsurprisingly given that the struggling star has previously thrived in a 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 system during his time under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, notably operating off the striker in one of those two attacking berths, en route to the Blues’ Champions League triumph in 2021.

It is a shame that Mount has seen his United career tarnished by injuries so far – missing a catalogue of games since 2022 – because he has shown plenty of times in the past for Chelsea just how good he can be, having memorably ended the 2021/22 campaign with 29 goals and assists to his name.

Should he get the start against Leicester, he will be hoping that his injury issues are behind him and he can kickstart his Red Devils career, with the incoming Amorim no doubt set to be keenly observing.

Friedkin want to seal exciting first Everton deal for "strong" DCL upgrade

After defeat against Southampton sent a timely reminder of just how much progress those at Goodison Park still need to make, The Friedkin Group now reportedly want to replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin by sealing an impressive first deal at Everton.

Everton transfer news

It certainly seems as though Dan Friedkin wants to shake things up at Everton when his team complete their takeover of the club. He’ll at least be relieved that the Toffees turned their early season form around but a 1-0 defeat at the hands of fellow relegation candidates Southampton should have brought any dreamers crashing back down to the reality that Everton still find themselves in.

Friedkin, of course, will want to make sure that those dreamers can fantasise about more than just survival and look set to turn their attention straight to the transfer window as a result, amid links to players such as Stanis Idumbo as of late. The Sevilla gem has reportedly been watched by Everton scouts, who have been hugely impressed.

Not just Dele: Everton could revive "animal" who's yet to feature in 2024

Nov 5, 2024

Before signing a player for the future, however, the Toffees could welcome the ultimate replacement for Calvert-Lewin. According to GiveMeSport, Friedkin Group now want to sign Jonathan David in a surprise move ahead of the likes of Newcastle United and Chelsea to replace their own soon to be out of contract star in the summer.

Like Calvert-Lewin, David is set to become a free agent at the end of his current Lille contract next year, representing a bargain deal for whoever is lucky enough to land his signature.

If it is to be Everton, then it would be quite the statement. Alas, at this moment in time, David is reportedly keen to join a club competing on the European stage which instantly leaves those at Goodison Park needing to pull a surprise to welcome the star striker.

"Strong" David would transform Everton

In the form of his career with 13 goals in his last 18 games in all competitions, including against both Real Madrid and Juventus, David would be the signing of the summer if Everton were to lure him to Merseyside. The Canada star has the quality to play for a top-six side, so it would of course have to be some offer from the Toffees, but there’s no doubt that he’d transform them back into a top-half side.

The Lille forward has earned plenty of praise over the years, including from Arsenal and Premier League legend Thierry Henry, who said via HITC in 2022: “When you have a player like Jonathan David, who runs the way he does, in behind.

“His directness. Don’t ask him to come to play or assist because he has none this season. If he sees the centre-back dropping, then he will go in behind. But as soon as he sees there is a gap, he will run and he is also pretty strong too and he loves contacts.”

Imagine him & Caicedo: Chelsea plotting move for "monster" £70m star

Since Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought Chelsea, they have spent an eye-watering amount of money, investing in every area of the pitch, as well as stocking up some of the best young talents in the world.

One area Chelsea have heavily invested in since the arrival of their new owners, is central midfield, signing Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernández, Roméo Lavia, Andrey Santos, Lesley Ugochukwu, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

And it is their most expensive of the lot that has impressed the most, with Caicedo going from strength to strength and showing his true quality in all phases of the game.

Moises Caicedo's importance

Since joining the club, Caicedo has made 62 appearances, scoring two goals and providing six assists, whilst playing across 5,067 minutes.

The 23-year-old has won the most tackles and interceptions combined in the Premier League this season, hoovering up balls in the middle of the park, winning his duels and keeping things ticking for the Blues.

Enzo Maresca has even stated the importance of Caicedo to his side, calling him “fantastic” since become manager. We have also begun to see slightly more from Caicedo in the playmaking department, spraying passes from deep, and chipping in with some assists this season already.

That attacking nature could be further unleashed as the defensive line behind him improves, giving him slightly more freedom to express himself, and Chelsea may well look to improve that in the near future.

Chelsea looking at Premier League defender

According to reports from talkSPORT, Chelsea are considering a move for Crystal Palace defender, Marc Guehi. The 24-year-old would reportedly cost in the region of £70m, as Newcastle refused to pay that fee for him in the summer transfer window.

Guehi came through the Chelsea academy, making 102 appearances for the U18, U19 and U21 sides, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists. But it was on loan with Swansea in the 2020/21 season that Guehi truly established himself, making 45 appearances and, contributing to 18 clean sheets.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

It was his time at Swansea that saw him labelled as a “giant” by scout Jacek Kulig, despite being just 5 foot 11, which is small for a defender.

But his presence on the pitch, ability to read the game at such a young age, and make timely challenges in defence, made him a target for clubs to swipe away from Chelsea, and it was Palace who secured him for a fee of around £20m.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Fast-forward to now, Guehi often captains the Eagles. The England international has made 126 appearances for Palace now, scoring seven goals and providing two assists, establishing himself as one of the league’s top defenders. He has also been a “monster” for England in the eyes of Palace reporter Bobbi Manzi on the way to earning 22 caps for his country.

A pairing of Guehi and Levi Colwill would provide Chelsea with an excellent base of progressive passing, both players having the ability to play disguised passes between the lines, an important factor of Maresca’s system at Chelsea, and a big reason the latter has thrived this campaign thus far.

Despite being a smaller central defender, Guehi also wins 2.75 aerial duels, a metric that Chelsea haven’t dominated in recent years, and adding some extra aerial ability would go a long way to improving the squad at both ends of the pitch.

Not only would it solidify Maresca’s backline but it would go a long way to helping the midfielders, like Caicedo, gain some extra security when progressing play.

Two of the most consistent teams in Europe are all set to lock horns in Paris on Wednesday as Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 fixture. Both PSG and the Reds have a healthy 13-point lead at the top of their respective leagues and are on course to win the title. Ahead of the mega European encounter, PSG boss Luis Enrique was full of praise for Arne Slot's team as he claimed that the Reds have become 'almost perfect' under the Dutch coach's tutelage.

AdvertisementWHAT LUIS ENRIQUE SAID

Speaking to reporters, the Spaniard said: "It's difficult to imagine a better match-up on paper, between two dominant teams, with two slightly different ways of playing but teams with dominant styles. Liverpool have been one of the best teams in Europe over the past few years, they won the Champions League (in 2019). It was difficult to improve on what Klopp did but Arne Slot has succeeded in creating an almost perfect team.

"There's a player like Salah with incredible stats, but there's not just Salah, there are lots of top-class players, it's a very complete team. That motivates us and it's time for us to also show we've got what it takes."

Getty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The former Spain and Barcelona head coach added: "They have one of the best attacks in Europe, we're going to look to keep the ball, but we'll need to be careful with their counter-attacks, they've got three fighter jets up front. We have to be able to do what we've been doing since the start of the season, there's nothing that changes.

"We know that we're facing the most consistent team this season, but the plan doesn't change. It's going to be a hard-fought, difficult game. The first match is not going to decide everything, but it's a very important one for us. It's hard for opponents to play at the Parc des Princes with the pressure of the crowd."

The Gunners’ hopes of lifting the Premier League trophy suffered a significant setback last weekend following a shock home defeat to West Ham. Meanwhile, Liverpool strengthened their grip on the top spot with a crucial victory over Manchester City at the Eihad. Despite the widening gap, Arteta has refused to give up hope, insisting his team can still produce something extraordinary to claw their way back into contention.

    WHAT ARTETA SAID

When asked if he was ready to admit defeat in the title race, Arteta delivered a defiant response.

"Over my dead body," he told reporters. "If not I will go home. Mathematically it is possible. You are there, you have to play every game, suddenly three days ago we could close a gap and you are like 'you are one-and-a-half games away.' It doesn't matter, we have to continue to go.

"The difficulty is higher than three days ago but if you are going to win the Premier League you have to do something special. If you are going to win the Premier League with the circumstances we have you will probably have to do something that nobody else has done in the history of the Premier League."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal’s attacking struggles were evident in their defeat to West Ham, where they lacked firepower in the final third. With injuries depleting the squad, Arteta has had to rely on Raheem Sterling, Leandro Trossard, and young Ethan Nwaneri as his primary attacking options. Indeed, the absence of key players such as Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, and Gabriel Martinelli has been a major setback for the Gunners.

Arteta added: "It was a very disappointing weekend. In the previous 15 games, we had won 10 and drawn five – exactly the same as Liverpool with exactly the same goal difference. So we have been extremely consistent over the last three months considering everything we have been through. We have generated that momentum and it was that weekend where we have to go again but we got a defeat. On top of that they [Liverpool] win.

"When you are trying to beat that momentum and we put so much into it with the circumstances that we have, it was a really hard one to take. The reality is there are so many games to play and you have to get back to it."

    WHAT NEXT FOR ARSENAL?

While the odds may be against them, Arteta remains confident that his side can still pull off a remarkable comeback. They will aim to bounce back and keep their faint title hopes alive when they face Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night.

Khawaja grinds out half-century on tough batting day

Queensland skipper makes 63 against New South Wales on a day where 12 wickets fell at the Gabba

Alex Malcolm09-Feb-2022Queensland captain Usman Khawaja continued his outstanding form tuning up for the upcoming Test tour of Pakistan with a patient half-century against New South Wales as the bowlers dominated on a seamer-friendly day one surface at the Gabba.Khawaja’s 63 was vital for the Bulls as they were bowled out for 193 having been sent in to bat. Blues quick Chris Tremain took 3 for 26 while allrounders Hayden Kerr and Jack Edwards and legspinner Tanveer Sangha chimed in with two wickets apiece.Bulls quick Mark Steketee then struck twice late in the day to leave New South Wales 2 for 33 at stumps.Khawaja moved up to open for Queensland, as he is likely to do in Pakistan, after Joe Burns was sidelined due to Covid-19. He struck just six boundaries in his 155-ball innings, highlighting how difficult it was to find fluency on a surface where there was consistent seam, swing and bounce.Tremain made the early breakthrough with Bryce Street caught at slip for 5. Trent Copeland then continued his stranglehold over Marnus Labuschagne. Australia’s Test No. 3 was given out lbw not offering a shot to a late inswinger from Copeland. Labuschagne was unhappy about the height and may have had a case but the umpire thought it was clipping the bails. Copeland has now picked up Labuschagne eight times in first-class cricket, one more than any other bowler.Matt Renshaw fell trying to pull a length ball from Tremain, holing out to mid-on. But Khawaja found an ally in Sam Truloff who was playing his first Sheffield Shield match since 2018 after scoring five centuries and a 97 in Queensland premier cricket this season. The pair put on 61 for the fourth wicket. Khawaja fell just before tea driving at a full delivery from Edwards and was caught at slip.Truloff struck four boundaries in his 37 but was given out lbw to Edwards in the first over after tea, although the ball looked to be going well down the leg side. It sparked a collapse as Queensland lost 7 for 53 to be all out for 193. Michael Neser was the only one of the Bulls’ last six batters to reach double figures, finishing 24 not out.The Blues had to survive a tricky 12-over session and Steketee made the most of it knocking over debutant Ryan Hackney and Jason Sangha in a superb six-over spell. Daniel Hughes remains 15 not out overnight.

Man Utd make approach to "machine" after internal talks, could cost £40m+

Manchester United have now made an approach to the agents of a “machine” player, and he could cost INEOS £40 million+, according to a new report.

The Red Devils could be in for a busy January if finances are right and players who are on their radar become available, as INEOS will want to quickly get the team right for Ruben Amorim, as he bids to take the club back to the top.

Man Utd now preparing £50m offer for ace they've been scouting for months

It would be a massive statement of intent from Manchester United’s hierarchy.

1 ByBen Browning Nov 25, 2024 Man Utd targeting a new striker

During United’s 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town, it was clear that they were struggling when going forward and have been for the whole of the season, as lack of goals has cost them several times in games. This is something that Amorim will want to change, as his Sporting Lisbon side were so good going forward, scoring plenty of goals in most matches.

Amorim will hope that his new way of playing will improve his team going forward, but he and INEOS may also have their eye on changing the personnel in the team. Signing a new striker appears to have become a priority, with Man United interested in Matheus Cunha from Wolves. The Red Devils were linked with a move for the Brazilian during the summer, and they have retained an interest in the forward and have been monitoring him throughout this season.

As well as Cunha, Victor Boniface is on United’s striker shortlist as the club scouts the market to find a new forward. However, the Red Devils may have to wait until the summer to sign Boniface, as his arrival would be an expensive one and would be unlikely to happen in the New Year. So, while United look for a new centre-forward, they have now made an approach to sign a player after holding internal talks about the situation.

Man Utd make approach to "machine" after internal talks, could cost £40m+

According to Rudy Galetti, Manchester United have made an approach to Ederson from Atalanta, who could cost the club £40 million or more. The Brazilian has become a very important player for the Italian side in recent seasons, playing a key role last term as they not only reached the Europa League final but won it by beating Bayer Leverkusen.

Ederson, who has been dubbed a “machine” by reporter Carlo Garganese, has started 12 of Atalanta’s 13 league games this season, and he picked up his second goal of the campaign over the weekend in the 3-1 win over Parma.

Galetti has now reported that United, as well as Liverpool, have made an approach to the agents of Ederson to get an understanding of the negotiations ahead of January. Manchester City are also said to be in the race, as they continue to look for a replacement for Rodri. United’s move for Ederson comes after it was reported that they held internal talks over a possible move for the Brazil international.

Ipswich Town eyeing move for £250,000 gem who starred in front of officials

Already looking ahead to potentially signing their next Liam Delap, Ipswich Town are now reportedly among the clubs eyeing a move to sign a Celtic youngster who just starred in front of their scouts.

Ipswich transfer news

On the performance front, it could be argued that Ipswich deserve more than just the nine points that they’ve won so far this season, sitting 18th in the Premier League as a result.

A case in point is their recent clash against Manchester United. After conceding in the opening moments of Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge of the Red Devils, Ipswich enjoyed the better share of chances and arguably should have gone on and secured three points after Omari Hutchinson’s equaliser.

Forced to settle for a point nonetheless, Ipswich now have something that they must build on in pursuit of survival. Once again, it was Delap at the centre of the majority of the joy that Kieran McKenna’s side had up against Manchester United’s backline, making it no surprise that those at Portman Road are looking to repeat their transfer genius.

According to Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider, Ipswich Town are now eyeing a move to sign Daniel Cummings after he starred in front of on-watching scouts, scoring the winning goal for Celtic against Club Brugge in the UEFA Youth League.

Ipswich struck gold on "fantastic" signing who's similar to a £63m star

The incredibly gifted youngster has a bright future with Ipswich ahead of him.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Nov 27, 2024

An 18-year-old who has scored 22 goals in just 20 games at youth level so far this season, Cummings could yet leave Scotland in a cheap deal. As things stand, his current Celtic deal is set to come to an end next summer, which means that he’ll cost a cross-border compensation fee of just €310,000 (£250,000+) in what could quickly turn into a bargain move.

"Great" Cummings can follow in Delap's footsteps

Yet to step into senior football, Cummings could swap Celtic for Ipswich in pursuit of exactly that. Whilst Delap had at least already experienced first-team football when he decided to swap Manchester City for Ipswich, he too was struggling to establish himself on a weekly basis at the Etihad even after successful loan spells away. It’s a struggle that Cummings may soon want to put to an end at Celtic, which could result in an exit away.

Praised for his “great runs” and “spectacular strikes” by The Young Team, who scout Scotland’s next top stars, Cummings looks like a player destined to make an impact whether it’s at Celtic or in the Premier League at a place like Portman Road.

For a bargain fee, Ipswich could be landing an impressive coup ahead of a number of Premier League rivals.
