Western Australia quarantine snub forces India tour to the east

India’s tour set to begin in Adelaide and Brisbane as WA government remains firm on a strict hotel quarantine for any international visitors

A cold shoulder from the Western Australia (WA) state government has clarified the options for Australia’s international season, with India’s tour set to begin in Adelaide and Brisbane.Adelaide Oval stands prepared to host back-to-back Tests – a day-night game and then a day match over the holiday period – should the MCG remain unsuitable for the Boxing Day showpiece amid Victoria’s coronavirus lockdown. The need for flexibility has also seen Cricket Australia (CA) lean heavily upon state associations in their planning, with matches to be primarily staged by staff already located in each state – a major departure from recent seasons in which CA has flown a massive travelling roadshow of events-team members around the country for international games. This model was introduced under the financial model that had CA taking on direct responsibility for managing international fixtures and passing on fixed annual distributions to the states.Initial plans devised by CA and the WACA had Australian and Indian players entering the country via Perth and preparing for the season via a relaxed quarantine that would have allowed them to train. However, the final decision by the WA state government, and its Premier Mark McGowan, to insist on a strict hotel quarantine for any international visitors, has forced the governing body to look towards Brisbane and Adelaide for the start of India’s tour, likely to commence with a suite of limited-overs matches before the four-Test series begins.”We acknowledge the WA government has a firm position on quarantine and border arrangements,” a CA spokesperson said. “The Australian men’s team will not be quarantining in Perth upon their return from the UK.”ALSO READ: Tournament hubs, Afghanistan Test and Boxing Day: where does the Australia summer stand?Where this leaves the scheduled Test between Australia and Afghanistan in Perth is unclear, although WA’s frustration with not being allotted one of the India Tests in the original schedule was plain. CA is still working assiduously to try to get the Afghanistan match played, and it would be of most value as a red-ball match for the home Test side led by Tim Paine immediately before the series against India.”We didn’t think it was acceptable to have the team return from a high-risk overseas location and then take part in normal training activities outside of quarantine, before flying out to another state to play games,” McGowan said. “There were just too many risks in the model put forward by Cricket Australia. We need to remain vigilant and do the right thing by all Western Australians and not take unnecessary chances.”It is plausible that Brisbane’s Test against India under the original schedule would instead become a cluster of white-ball matches, with three ODIs and three T20Is – all slated to be played by Virat Kohli’s team. That may then give way to the Afghanistan Test match, before the Australian squad travels to Adelaide for the start of the India Test series in mid-December.While Melbourne is likely to be kept in theoretical calculations as host of the traditional Boxing Day Test for as long as possible, the realities of crowds and Covid-19 restrictions make it more likely with every passing day that Adelaide will step in.From there, the Test season may well reach a crescendo with back-to-back matches in Sydney. The other option would be to venture back to Brisbane and the Gabba for the final Test of the series.A revised Test series schedule is expected to be announced by CA this week, pending government approvals.

Tony Opatha, who led Sri Lanka's rebel tour to South Africa in 1982, dies

Former Sri Lanka seamer Tony Opatha has died from a suspected stroke on Friday morning in Colombo, at the age of 73. He was in hospital for past several days.Opatha had played five ODIs, across the 1975 and 1979 World Cups, and was known as a domestic stalwart through the 1970s, playing for the Air Force – of which he was a serviceman – and the Nondescripts Cricket Club. He also played a year of club cricket in Ireland, and later played in the Netherlands. He is remembered as arguably Sri Lanka’s finest seam bowlers of the 1970s, largely due to his brisk pace and control. He had been among the islands’ first cricketers to play club cricket in England and was influential in creating similar opportunities for other Sri Lankan players of the era.Opatha also infamously led Sri Lanka’s rebel tour to South Africa in 1982-83 as a player-cum-manager, for which he and his teammates were given life bans and attracted harsh judgement from both Sri Lanka’s government and the island’s cricket establishment. Opatha eventually won back some acceptance; in 2018, he was among 49 players to be honoured by Sri Lanka Cricket for their services to cricket.

Leeds held talks to land £3.4m star who could thrive with Kamara

Leeds United have a busy summer ahead of them as they plot to secure promotion to the Premier League from the Championship at the second time of asking.

The Whites failed to make an instant return to the top-flight, following their relegation last year, as they were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the play-off final at Wembley last month.

Daniel Farke led his team to a third-placed finish in the league and that meant that they had to go through the play-offs, and they beat Norwich 4-0 over two legs before falling short in the capital.

The German head coach will now have to navigate the upcoming summer transfer window to ensure that his squad is in the best possible position to attack the Championship once again.

Bundesliga side Bayern Munich have been touted with an interest in teen whiz Archie Gray, Wilfried Gnonto is said to be keen on a move to Italy, and forward Crysencio Summerville has been linked with Premier League giants Liverpool.

Central midfielder Ilia Gruev, per TEAMtalk, is also of interest to Borussia Dortmund and the club have placed a price tag of £15m on his head.

This means that Leeds could need a new midfield partner for Glen Kamara, and they are reportedly already in talks with a player who could fulfill that role.

Leeds United in talks to sign £3.4m starlet

According to Italian outlet il Resto del Carlino Sport, via Leeds United News, the Yorkshire-based outfit are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Reggiana attacking midfielder Natan Girma.

The report claims that Italian side Monza alongside English teams Leeds and Watford are all lining up moves to sign the 22-year-old ace, as Farke looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park.

It states that the Hornets and the Whites have already held talks with Reggiana and the player's representatives ahead of a possible summer transfer for the young whiz.

The outlet goes on to add that it could take an offer of up to €4m (£3.4m) to secure his services, and that any bids below €3m will not be considered by the Serie B side.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not Leeds are prepared to pay £3.4m, or a fee within that region, to add the dynamo to their ranks his summer.

If they do decide to push ahead and sign the Swiss maestro then they could land a player who could thrive alongside Kamara in the middle of the park at Elland Road.

Glen Kamara's impressive debut season with Leeds

Farke swooped to sign the Finland international from Scottish giants Rangers ahead of the 2023/24 campaign for a reported fee of around £5m.

The 28-year-old played a crucial role at the base of the midfield for the German head coach as his metronomic play in possession was key to how the team wanted to play.

Leeds looked to dominate the ball and dictate the play by having the majority of the possession, so that they could methodically break down their opponents, as they averaged 58.3% of the ball per game.

Kamara ranked within the top 2% of Championship midfielders for pass accuracy (92.7%), the top 10% for passes attempted per 90 (65.10), and the top 6% for progressive passes per 90 (6.87).

This shows that he was an outstanding passer in the second tier, both in terms of his ability to retain possession at an exceptional rate whilst also being progressive and forward-thinking in his use of the ball.

As you can see in the table above, the 28-year-old metronome also ranked highly within the Leeds squad in a number of key in possession metrics.

No one was more efficient than him with the ball at their feet, as shown by his incredible pass accuracy, and he added a creative threat on top of that.

However, Kamara did end the Championship season with zero goals in 40 appearances (including the play-offs), which suggests that there is room to improve on that front.

Why Leeds should sign Natan Girma

Girma could now be brought in to thrive alongside the Finnish whiz as he has the quality to offer a box-to-box presence next to the metronomic former Rangers star.

The 22-year-old talent has the ability to offer a goalscoring threat from the middle of the park, to make up for Kamara's struggles at that part of the game, whilst also providing defensive cover in front of the back four.

Firstly, the £3.4m Leeds target scored five goals in 26 appearances in the Serie B for Reggiana during the 2023/24 campaign, and ranked within the top 14% of his positional peers for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.29).

This suggests that the Swiss wizard, who scored five goals in 21 games for Servette at U21 level, could provide goals from midfield to make up for Kamara's lack of threat in the final third as a finisher.

No central midfielder scored more than one goal in the Championship for the Whites this season, which suggests that Girma could add something that Farke's side desperately lacked.

Alongside his attacking prowess, the former Servette youngster is also an above average defender who can help to win possession back and cut out opposition attacks.

As you can see in the table above, he ranked above average among his positional peers in the Serie B in a variety of key defensive metrics, including tackles, interceptions, and aerial duels won.

These statistics suggest that Girma, who made zero errors that led to shots or goals for the opposition, offers quality in and out of possession for his side.

Therefore, he could be the perfect partner for the metronomic Kamara as the Whites target could be a fantastic box-to-box midfielder to complement the Finnish ace's fantastic ball retention and passing quality in midfield.

Rangers agree personal terms to make 22 y/o first signing in £2m transfer

Rangers are believed to be closing in on their first signing of the summer transfer window, with a £2m addition seemingly on his way to the club after agreeing on personal terms.

Rangers transfer rumours

A long and tense season at Ibrox has nearly reached its conclusion, but there is still another opportunity for the Gers to win another piece of silverware, adding to their Scottish League Cup triumph.

On Saturday afternoon, Philippe Clement's side take on Celtic in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park, as they look to avenge missing out on the Scottish Premiership title to their biggest rivals.

Whether Rangers win or lose this weekend, new faces are required in the squad this summer, with a host of players linked with moves to Ibrox. One such figure is Levski Sofia ace Jose Cordoba, with talks reportedly taking place over a switch, having been hailed as the "best defender in his league".

The Gers are also thought to be willing to make Oscar Cortes' loan move from Lens a permanent one at the end of the season, even though injuries have hampered him during his spell at the club to date. Young Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng has also emerged as an option, not to mention being seen as a possible replacement for Abdallah Sima, should he return to Brighton this summer.

Rangers close in on first summer signing

According to a new update from The Daily Record, Rangers have now agreed personal terms with Cordoba, with the 22-year-old set to arrive as Clement's first signing of the summer window.

The report says that while reports in the player's homeland "have claimed that the fee could be around £3.2m", due to "future add-ons that are built into the transfer", the "upfront deal is likely to be closer to £2m."

Not even the most ardent Rangers supporter is likely to lay claim to being hugely knowledgeable about Cordoba as a player, considering the league he is playing in, but it is still exciting to see the club acting fast and looking to get some early transfer business over the line this summer.

The youngster's aforementioned praise of the standout defender in the Bulgarian First League says a lot about his ability, and he is also a 10-time capped Panama international.

Centre-back is an important area of the pitch for Clement to be focusing on ahead of next season, considering the likes of Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun are both in their 30s now, and far from certain to remain at Ibrox for the foreseeable future. It remains to be seen if the latter will be offered an extension ahead of his current deal expiring in the coming weeks, but the manager has hinted that talks could take place.

Either way, bringing in a young defender seems to make sense, allowing Rangers to build a new back-line for the future, and Cordoba looks set to be that man.

Rangers lining up swoop for "relentless" star who’d help Cantwell flourish

Glasgow Rangers have enjoyed a busy start to the summer transfer window as they have already secured three additions for their playing squad.

Oscar Cortes has joined on a second loan deal from Lens, with an obligation to make it permanent next summer, Jefte has signed permanently from Fluminense, and Clinton Nsiala will officially join the club next month after his contract with AC Milan expires.

A fourth player could be about to walk through the door at Ibrox as well as the club are reportedly in pole position to sign Yusuf Kabadayi from Bayern Munich.

The Glasgow giants now have a central midfielder in their sights as they are interested in a swoop to sign a player from one of their Scottish Premiership rivals.

Rangers interest in Scottish dynamo

According to The Scottish Sun, Nils Koppen is lining up a deal to sign Scottish dynamo Connor Barron from Aberdeen during the summer window.

The report claims that the Light Blues are at the front of the queue of clubs looking to snap up the 21-year-old midfielder ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

His contract with the Dons expired at the end of last month and Rangers are now said to be ready to 'step up' their interest in the 5 foot 9 youngster to add him to their squad.

Connor Barron Aberdeen

The Scottish Sun adds that Aberdeen would be due compensation from the Gers and that the two clubs would have to reach an agreement, whilst the Premiership side could rake in up to £500k if he makes a move down south or to Italy – where there has been interest in him.

Rangers could help attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell to flourish by securing a deal for the out-of-contract star over the coming weeks, due to his tenacity and athleticism in the middle of the park.

How Connor Barron could help Todd Cantwell

Having an energetic and impressive defensive-minded ace at the base of the midfield could free up the English wizard to stay higher and maintain a constant threat in attack, rather than being too worried about his defensive duties and dropping in to help the team.

Analyst John Walker described Barron as "relentless" and lauded his excellent pressing out of possession earlier this year, which speaks to his impressive work off the ball.

As you can see in the table above, that was backed up by the Aberdeen star's performances on the pitch as he outperformed Rangers defensive midfielder John Lundstram, who has now left Ibrox on a free transfer, in a number of key metrics.

Barron could win a higher percentage of his duels in the middle of the park and be dribbled past fewer times by opposition players, which could cut out more attacks and lead to more transition opportunities for Rangers.

Fabio Silva and Todd Cantwell

That could make him a dream for Cantwell as it would, therefore, provide the attacking midfielder with more security behind him and more attacks to showcase his quality.

The 26-year-old whiz produced seven goals and five assists in 30 Premiership matches this term but could have more chances to add to both of those tallies by having a defensive anchor behind him to mop up the ball and recycle it for the ex-Norwich ace to weave his magic at the top end of the pitch.

The Light Blues have been linked with an interest in the talented youngster this summer.

Koppen and Philippe Clement could, therefore, help Cantwell to flourish further in a Light Blues shirt by bringing Barron in to play in midfield behind the English talent.

Wearing the captain's armband in Martin Odegaard's absence, Saka was instrumental in Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League. The England international scored the second of the night and also performed his defensive duties with diligence in what was a standout overall performance at the Emirates on Tuesday evening.

Saka’s journey with Arsenal began when he joined the club’s Hale End academy at the age of seven. Over the years, he has remained loyal to the north London club, spending his entire first-team career with the Gunners.

WHAT HENRY SAID

During the Champions League show at Henry reflected on Saka’s remarkable rise and shared that he had not initially envisioned the forward reaching such heights.

"I saw him at the academy and I didn’t think he would be that good, I’ll be honest with you,” Henry said. "I saw him at the academy and I didn’t think he would be that good, I’ll be honest with you. But when you work, you have that work ethic, you have a good family behind you, cause I know the family, he is clever, he works well. I really saw a player reaching his level, because right now he is at a level, hard to arrive. He has been there for almost three years if I am being honest."

The Arsenal legend further highlighted Saka’s selflessness and dedication, attributes that have earned him a reputation as one of the Premier League's most reliable players.

He added: "At the European Championship (with England) they are asking him to play wing-back, he plays wing-back. He goes and defends for his right-back, he goes wide, he goes left, he goes behind, he does everything without complaining. He plays every single game. He played in the Carabao Cup, he played after the World Cup straight away in the first round of the FA Cup. What Everton’s starting XI could look like after £85m+ spending spree

Despite excelling defensively under boss Sean Dyche during the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, Everton have struggled within the attacking third to produce quality on a regular basis.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Abdoulaye Doucoure both notched up seven goals in the league, but endured droughts throughout the campaign, with the latter failing to score for over four months – a period that saw the club pick up just one win in 15 outings.

The Toffees only managed a tally of 40 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, with only bottom club Sheffield United producing a total fewer than Dyche’s side.

They desperately need reinforcements in the final third but will need to act in a sensible manner to prevent breaching the Premier League’s strict PSR rules for a third time in the last 12 months.

Outgoings will undoubtedly be the focus this summer, but the club should also target players who will add to their defensive solidity and provide an added threat in attacking areas.

That being said, based upon the recent transfer rumours surrounding the club, here's a look at Dyche's dream starting XI for Everton in the 2024/25 season.

1 GK – Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford helped keep Everton up

The England number one has been pivotal in the club's survival campaign, keeping 13 clean sheets, the second-most of any 'keeper in the division behind Arsenal's David Raya.

Everton forked out £30m for his signature way back in 2017, with the big-money move now looking like a bargain given his recent form for the Toffees and England.

2 RB – Yukinari Sugawara

Yukinara Sugawara

One of the major priorities this summer will be to acquire a suitable addition at right-back, with both Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman firmly in veteran status, and with Nathan Patterson seemingly out of the picture.

A potential bargain solution has emerged in the form of AZ Alkmaar sensation, Yukinari Sugawara, with Sky Sports Germany naming the Toffees among the suitors for the 23-year-old – who would be available for just £5m.

The Japanese international could add a new attacking thrust from right-back, having contributed nine assists last season.

3 CB – Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

The 21-year-old has had an excellent campaign for the Toffees, with his brilliant form not going unnoticed, with the former Carlisle United youngster linked with a huge move to Manchester United this summer.

The centre-back started 35 out of 38 Premier League matches during 2023/24, with the Toffees desperately wanting to keep hold of their young talent ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

4 CB – James Tarkowski

japhet-tanganga-james-tarkowski-everton-transfer-premier-league

The second half of Everton's long-term centre-back partnership is James Tarkowski, with the 31-year-old starting every single league match under Dyche this season.

Since his free transfer to Goodison Park, Tarkowski has featured 85 times for the Toffees – proving to be one of the club's best pickups in recent times.

5 LB – Vitaliy Mykolenko

The Ukrainian left-back really settled into life in the Premier League last season, featuring 28 times under Dyche and scoring twice against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.

He's become an integral part of the Toffees' defence, starring alongside Tarkowski and Branthwaite, with the supporters finally beginning to see why the club decided to pay £17m for his signature.

6 RM – Yankuba Minteh

Yankuba Minteh for Feyenoord

The 19-year-old, who is contracted to Newcastle United, has scored ten goals and provided five assists in his 27 appearances for Arne Slot's Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, as he looks to gain experience ahead of a potential first-team spot in the Premier League.

Dyche's side have recently been credited with an interest in the Gambian, with the Magpies potentially looking to make a quick profit on the winger after his impressive loan spell away from St James' Park.

According to The Telegraph, the youngster could command a fee of around £40m.

7 CM – James Garner

Everton midfielder James Garner.

The former Manchester United youngster has made 61 appearances since his switch to Goodison in the summer of 2022 from Manchester United, scoring twice including a stunner in the Carabao Cup tie against Aston Villa at Villa Park.

With Garner only being 23, he has a huge future ahead of him at Goodison Park, with the versatile talent for sure in line to receive a senior England call-up in the near future should he receive consistent minutes next season.

8 CM – Khephren Thuram

khephren-thuram-liverpool-naby-keita-transfer-premier-league

The 23-year-old Frenchman, who has previously attracted interest from Merseyside rivals Liverpool, has enjoyed a brilliant campaign in Ligue 1, featuring 27 times for Nice, leading to a call-up to the French side to feature at this summer’s Olympic Games.

A report by Tutto Juve claims both Everton and Napoli are ready to offer €25m (£21m) – a potential bargain for a player of his calibre and an ideal replacement for Amadou Onana who could be on his way out at Goodison, amid the Toffees desire to sell for a fee of around £60m.

9 LM – Dwight McNeil

dwight-mcneil-everton-sean-dyche-roberto-martinez-kevin-mirallas-beto-lukaku

Despite scoring between December and April, winger Dwight McNeil demonstrated his quality towards the tail end of the campaign, scoring and assisting in victories against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool.

The £20m wideman has racked up 82 appearances for the Toffees since his big-money move back in the summer of 2022, being the perfect player for Dyche in wide areas, with his ability going forward and work rate defensively, two qualities that have seen him thrive at Goodison Park.

10 CAM – Abdoulaye Doucoure

Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure

After finishing the season as the club's joint top-scorer alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it would be hard not to include the Malian in the starting lineup for next season.

The 31-year-old, who joined the club for £20m back in 2020, is entering the final year of his current deal next season, with the former Watford man needing to stake his claim for an extension if he is to stay on Merseyside beyond 2025.
