£22 million player asks to leave Tottenham as club make out-of-window offer

His future is looking far away from north London.

ByEmilio Galantini May 4, 2024

Losing their last four Premier League games, including heavy defeats to Liverpool and Newcastle, as well as north London derby losses to Chelsea and Arsenal, these last four weeks have been tough to swallow for supporters.

Postecoglou broke records with Tottenham's early-season winning streak, and he boasts the best-ever start made by a new manager in English top-flight history. However, Spurs' form since the turn of the year has highlighted that there is still plenty of work to do.

Recently, the Lilywhites manager was frank in admitting that Spurs are in the midst of a painful, long-term rebuild, with Postecoglou even stating a while ago that they need over three transfer windows until they're at the required level.

"We've got a lot of work to do still on the squad and I don't think we're anywhere near where we want to be. It probably will take a little bit more than three windows to get there, for sure," said Postecoglou on new signings and the Tottenham project.

"In terms of the robustness, adaptability, and compatibility of the squad, I think there's still a fair bit of change we need to do. I certainly don't think we're one or two players away from getting to where I want us to be, nowhere near it. Some of that will be natural evolution. Some of it hopefully means we continue to get the improvement we've had this year from some of our players. If that happens over the next 12 months, then we'll be in a great position."

One of the positions they wish to bolster is at centre-forward, coming after the departure of club-record scorer Kane to Bayern Munich last year. Tottenham are targeting Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez as one option, according to reports, and they've got their eyes on Brentford's Ivan Toney as well.

Tottenham ready to offer £50 million for Ivan Toney

According to Football Transfers, Tottenham are planning to offer £50 million to lure Toney away from west London this summer, alongside rivals West Ham.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Both clubs are seen as frontrunners to sign the England international who scored 20 league goals last season, and a further four goals and an assist this campaign following the return from his on-field ban.

"He’s scored goals wherever he’s been and the past few years he’s been a handful in every game in any league," said former Brentford ace Hermann Hreidarsson.

"I’m a big fan of his and I think he’ll do really well. It’s down to him [how far he goes]. He’s got a bit of everything. He’s powerful, he’s pacey and skilful. Year-by-year your football IQ goes up.

"He’s a world-class player and it’s down to him. He can go wherever he wants."

Cricket Australia open to meeting with states to thrash out financial issues

A rapidly escalating stand-off between Cricket Australia and the states is a chance of settling down into constructive discussion of the game’s finances in the time of Covid-19 after the governing body indicated openness to a collective meeting to resolve the current raft of differences.CA’s chairman Earl Eddings is understood to have spoken with his New South Wales counterpart John Knox on Thursday afternoon, after the most powerful of the state chairmen suggested an open dialogue between CA, the states and the Australian Cricketers Association as the best way to chart a path forward. This would be after the fashion of the “national cabinet” video conference meetings between the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and state premiers in recent months to deal with the pandemic. While there is not complete agreement between the parties – CA is believed to prefer meeting with the state chairmen first before convening the Australian Cricket Council that also includes the ACA – the exchange between Eddings and Knox is a significant moment in what had up to last week been a succession of events spiraling towards ugly confrontation over money in the game. CA is also believed to be close to securing a A$100 million line of credit from the Commonwealth Bank.Even so, more than 150 jobs have already been lost among state associations that have – with the exception of NSW – made cost cuts of varying degrees, in addition to some 200 staff being stood down by CA on 20% pay until the end of the financial year. A major round of redundancies at CA, thought to cost as many as 20% of staff their jobs, is a matter of days away.

While NSW and Queensland are the two states who have flatly refused to agree to a 25% cut to their multimillion dollar annual grants as proposed by CA, with Western Australia only agreeing to terms on the conditions that all states must do so, there is believed to be a desire for more collective communication on the issue among all six of the associations that effectively comprise CA’s shareholder group.Origins of the dispute date back to mid-March, when a select group of CA board directors and executives mapped out a stringent course of austerity medicine for the game. They did so at a time when very little was known about the extent of the pandemic and its effects on cricket, with little or no certainty available about a return to play. While a report prepared by CA’s chief medical officer, doctor John Orchard, expressed cautious optimism in early April, CA went ahead with the plan for major staff stand downs, cuts to state grants and negotiations for a reduction in forecast revenue and thus overall payment pool available to the ACA’s players. These actions caught the states, CA staff and the players unawares after previous messaging from Roberts had given every indication that cricket had the financial reserves and time with which to absorb the coronavirus shock.Widespread confusion and bemusement followed, while state associations went about their own cuts at the same time as negotiating individually with CA around annual grants. At the same time, the ACA asked increasingly strident questions of CA, culminating in its request to enter the MoU’s dispute resolution process last week upon being given a revenue forecast unchanged from March.Since then the Australian outlook for Covid-19 has greatly improved, India have confirmed their intent to tour during the summer for matches worth some A$300 million to CA, and the winter football codes have set an example both in terms of their collaborative dealings with the crisis and their return to play by mid-June. CA has also announced its full international schedule, and can be expected to release the Big Bash League fixture soon. Most negotiations in the past 10 weeks have taken place at board-to-board level, sidelining Roberts, but the piecemeal nature of the cuts being made around the country, without a unified approach to the likelihood of revenue failing to keep pace with the game’s growing cost-base, has raised wide concern that a more cohesive tack must be taken. With the phone call between Eddings and Knox on Thursday, there is now hope that this can start, albeit too late for those who have already lost their jobs.

TV umpires to call front-foot no-balls in ODI Super League

The ICC had used the technology to monitor overstepping during the Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year

Front-foot no-balls will be monitored exclusively by the third umpire, and teams will be deducted points for slow over-rates in the ICC World Cup Super League, which begins later this week with the three-match ODI series between England and Ireland. The front-foot no-ball regulation will apply in both ODIs and T20Is and is another step towards taking oversight of the front out of the domain of the on-field umpire in all international cricket. The ICC has previously trialed the technology to monitor bowlers overstepping during the ODI series between India and West Indies. Positive results there led to the ICC deciding to leave the adjudication of front-foot no-balls solely with the third umpire during the Women’s T20 World Cup earlier this year in Australia.”It is something that will be used on Thursday [between Ireland and England] and for the series to be played,” Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager cricket operations, said. “Certainly there is the importance of the free hit in white-ball cricket, and getting no-balls called accurately. That is considered to be an important feature. The Cricket Committee has recommended that and it’s in the playing conditions for the World Cup Super League.”No-balls for height will continue to be called by the on-field umpires, but their missing line-call no-balls has been a recurring issue in high-profile cricket in recent years. The ICC first trialed the process in 2016, during Pakistan’s tour of England. But it has taken time – as well as growing scrutiny of front-foot calls – to roll it out on a broader scale. On England’s last tour of Sri Lanka, in November 2018, broadcasters counted as many as as many as 12 no-balls missed by the umpires. In March 2019, umpire S Ravi missed a no-ball off the last ball of a tight IPL game between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. At the World Cup last year, umpires missed a no-ball in Australia’s game against West Indies; Chris Gayle was dismissed off the next ball, which should’ve been a free hit. The ongoing Test series between England and West Indies has also seen a number of no-balls not being called. The points system in the Super League awards 10 points for a win and five for a tie, no-result or an abandoned game. But as with Test cricket and the World Test Championship, Allardice confirmed a competition points penalty will apply to sides who fail to keep up with the minimum over rates. In the case of the Super League, one point will be deducted for every full over a side has fallen short of bowling in the time allowed. The league will also, Allardice confirmed, allow two DRS reviews per team per innings. That increase from one was announced in June and applies to T20Is as well. That is part of an interim change to playing conditions – like the ban on using saliva to shine a ball – brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and is due to be reviewed every three months.”Each format got one extra review,” Allardice said. “That was the plan originally [that it was an interim measure]. We will see how it plays out, is it creating extra delays in the game or is allowing to get the right decision more often. I think it’s one that will have more debate as we get to the end of the interim period.”No cut-off date has been finalised at the moment for when the league finishes, though it was envisaged as a two-year league. The top seven sides and India – as hosts – qualify directly to the 2023 World Cup. The ICC has moved that event from a February-March window to October-November, allowing more time for the league to be concluded.”Obviously we start this league in a time when there is a lot of uncertainty around cricket fixtures generally,” Allardice said. “We bought some more time to be able to play or reschedule series but we’re expecting early 2023 as a cut-off. There is a World Cup Qualifier to be played during 2023 to identify the last two teams to go into the World Cup. But that will be finalised once we get more input from our members and their scheduling.”

Fewer touches than Onana: Man Utd must bench 5/10 star after Brighton

At long, long last Manchester United's Premier League campaign has come to an end.

It has been an arduous season for Erik ten Hag and his men with the Dutchman steering the club through choppy waters but failing to come out of the other side.

There are potentially calmer waters ahead, namely if they beat rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley next weekend.

Until then, they will have to stew over their worst-ever finish in the Premier League. They reside in eighth position on 60 points, eight points off the top four and 31 points behind City.

So, what is the solution? Get rid of Ten Hag? Possibly, but it's perhaps worth waiting to see what the INEOS era can rustle up over the summer first.

United have spent seismic sums of money in years gone by so we all know a transfer window may not resolve things. Yet, there is a new regime in place and things could improve.

However, before that all happens they need to plan for Wembley. Who takes to the field from the off will be intriguing, but it should not include goal machine Scott McTominay.

Why McTominay must be dropped

The Scot has had a rather topsy-turvy campaign at Old Trafford, much like the team he plays for.

Last summer it looked as though the midfielder could have been on his way to West Ham. Yet, he stayed in Manchester and has had a pretty decent campaign all things considered.

McTominay has found the net on ten occasions in 42 matches across all competitions. That's not a bad figure at all, especially for someone who has only scored 29 senior goals by the age of 27.

However, he is not the most consistent of individuals and at times this season has been guilty of not doing an awful lot. United may well have defeated Brighton 2-0 on Sunday but the Scottish star was not at the races with club media personality Mark Goldbridge lamenting the fact that he "offers nothing" in the middle of the park.

Harsh? Given his numbers this season, yes, but he did not play well as the season came to an end.

McTominay spurned a glorious chance to score in the first half, perhaps one of their best of the day despite the scoreline. Played in by captain Bruno Fernandes, the academy graduate took a poor first touch and then sliced an effort high and wide from a good area inside the box.

Manchester United players celebrate

The Scot has been good in forward areas this term but that was a wild, wild effort that just about summed up his afternoon.

The Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst handed him a 5/10 rating, lamenting that 'wasted' opportunity inside the penalty area.

The numbers don't make for great reading either with McTominay's 36 touches of the ball 17 fewer than goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Considering he played 90 minutes that's a rather damning indictment of a lack of involvement in the clash. Furthermore, he didn't play a single key pass, nor did he attempt a dribble. To make matters worse, he didn't make an interception and made just one tackle. An 88% pass success rate wasn't bad but on the whole it was a nothing performance.

Ahead of the FA Cup final next weekend Ten Hag has plenty of food for thought. Rasmus Hojlund came off the bench to score and could come back into the team while it would take a brave man to leave out Marcus Rashford in such a big game. You could even move Casemiro further forward again.

McTominay should be worried; this performance proved he should not be a shoo-in for the starting lineup at Wembley on Saturday.

Rangers star who won 100% duels now simply has to start in the Old Firm

Glasgow Rangers have maintained the pressure on their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a 4-1 win over Kilmarnock on Sunday.

The Light Blues are now three points adrift of first place ahead of the Old Firm game next Saturday, but had to work hard to secure all three points this weekend.

An early own goal from James Tavernier, who bundled the ball into his own net, was followed up by a missed penalty from the Gers captain to give the away side the lead.

However, a strike from Fabio Silva just before the break was followed by second half goals from substitutes Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence, and John Souttar to wrap up the win.

Fabio Silva

Ahead of the Old Firm against Celtic next weekend, Philippe Clement must now unleash Ben Davies from the start after his show-stealing cameo against Kilmarnock.

Ben Davies' performance against Kilmarnock

The left-footed defender was brought off the bench at half-time to replace Leon Balogun, who had started the game on the right of the centre-back pairing next to John Souttar.

Davies had not played since the club's 3-2 win over Real Betis in the Europa League in December – an unused substitute in his last ten appearances in the matchday squad – and was introduced with the score at 1-1.

The former Liverpool man stepped up, despite his lack of match action in recent months, and stole the show with a huge goal to put Rangers 2-1 up in the 62nd minute, following up at the back post to bundle the ball into the back of the net.

That goal from Davies, who was handed a match rating of 7.8/10 by Sofascore, settled the nerves and allowed the Gers to go on and score another two goals to secure a comfortable win.

As you can see in the table above, Davies also won 100% of his duels and made an eye-catching four interceptions – more than any other Rangers player on the pitch, despite only playing 45 minutes.

Why Ben Davies should start against Celtic

With Connor Goldson out for the remainder of the season with a knee injury, Balogun and Davies are the manager's two options to start next to Souttar against Celtic.

The 35-year-old Nigerian was selected to start the clash with Kilmarnock ahead of the Englishman but their respective performances suggest that there is a clear winner to be picked for the Old Firm.

Leon Balogun

Balogun lost two of his three aerial duels and one of his four on the deck, and failed to make a single interception in his 45 minutes on the pitch.

This suggests that Davies provided the side with far more strength in physical duels to stop opposition players from bullying him to create chances, whilst he also read the game better to cut out attacks by making key interceptions.

The 28-year-old star also being a naturally left-footed player gives him an advantage over Balogun when it comes to building up attacks in possession, as he can open up on his favoured side to play the ball down the left or back into midfield with ease.

Therefore, Davies must start the Old Firm clash with Celtic next weekend, with Goldson out through injury, ahead of Balogun after he stole the show against Kilmarnock with his vital goal and superb defensive display off the bench.

Sourav Ganguly: Women's T20 Challenge during IPL 'very much on'

BCCI president says there’s a “plan in place” to conduct a camp for the India women’s team

PTI02-Aug-2020BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said the women’s IPL or the Women’s T20 Challenge, as it is better known, is “very much on”.The men’s IPL will be held between September 19 and November 10 in the UAE due to the surge in Covid-19 cases in India. The women’s T20 matches will also be fit into the schedule, according to Ganguly.”I can confirm to you that the women’s IPL is very much on and we do have a plan in place for the national team also,” Ganguly said. The BCCI president, who is awaiting a Supreme Court verdict on waiver of the cooling-off period to continue in the position, did not divulge details but another senior official privy to the development said that the women’s T20 matches will be held during the last phase of IPL, like last year.”The women’s Challenger series is likely to be held between November 1-10 and there could be a camp before that,” the source said.A BCCI release later in the evening stated that the Women’s T20 Challenge would also take place alongside the IPL, featuring three teams playing four matches during the final week of the tournament.Ganguly also said that the centrally-contracted women players will have a camp which has been delayed due to the prevailing situation in the country.”We couldn’t have exposed any of our cricketers – be it male or female to health risk. It would have been dangerous,” Ganguly said. “The NCA also remained shut because of Covid-19. But we have a plan in place and we will have a camp for women, I can tell you that.”The BCCI’s cricket operations team is chalking up a schedule where India Women are likely to have two full-fledged white-ball series against South Africa and West Indies before playing the ODI World Cup in New Zealand next year. With the WBBL scheduled to run between October 17 and November 29 in Australia, it remains to be seen how the authorities will manage the participation of several Indian and foreign players.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Anderson has been told by a family court in Porto Alegre that he faces time in prison unless he pays out the £45,000 (£58,000) he owes, according to GZH. The former Manchester United star, who retired in 2019 at the age of 31, will have to serve 30 days in jail unless he clears his child maintenance debt. Anderson must serve the sentence in a "closed regime" but if there is no room he could be allowed the option of a "semi-open" regime. This would allow him to work or study in the daytime and then return to prison at night to sleep.

Man Utd scout left “bewitched” by "great" £60m transfer target

A Manchester United scout was reportedly left "bewitched" by the performance of one of the club's summer transfer targets, having flown to watch him in action earlier this week.

Man Utd transfer news

The Red Devils have had such a disappointing season, having gone into the campaign as contenders to finish in the top four in the Premier League. Instead, they have rarely looked like achieving that goal, and crashed out of Europe after finishing bottom of their Champions League group.

For that reason, it is paramount that a number of new signings come in during the summer transfer window, with improvements, from their ageing defence to their goal-shy attack, needed all over the pitch.

RB Leipzig and Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko is a reported target for United at the end of the season, having scored 14 goals in just 17 Bundesliga starts this season. He is seen as a player who could provide much-needed competition for Rasmus Hojlund in the centre of attack, especially with Anthony Martial expected to move on.

Another top target appears to be Crystal Palace maestro Michael Olise, whose quality and end product have consistently caught the eye this season – when he has been fit. Fabrizio Romano has said of the situation: "Olise remains a player who is really appreciated at Manchester United, also by people on the scouting team since one year ago."

Man Utd "bewitched" by target

According to Tuttosport (via Sport Witness) a Manchester United representative was left "bewitched" by Gleison Bremer when watching him in action for Juventus against Atalanta in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday, as they won 1-0 thanks to a Dusan Vlahovic goal.

The individual in question "flew to Italy specifically" to watch the Brazilian in action, and the Red Devils are now "ready to get serious" with regards to a move for him. A bid of €70m (£60m) is expected to be enough to get him.

Juventus' Gleison Bremer

Bremer is precisely what United need this summer in terms of a dominant centre-back who is at a good age to come in and be Lisandro Martinez's long-term partner at the heart of the defence.

The 27-year-old has impressed for Juve throughout this season, averaging 4.1 clearances and 2.9 aerial duel wins per game in Serie A across 35 appearances. He has even chipped in with three goals for good measure. Meanwhile, former Brazil manager Tite once waxed lyrical over him after calling him up for international duty, saying:

"Bremer had this opportunity to be called up thanks to his career and performances of a high level at Torino and Juventus. Perhaps we got it wrong and didn’t observe him closely enough, because he deserved more of our attention a lot earlier. When he arrived here, in the games and the training sessions we did together, he gave such a sense of certainty. He really is a player of great quality."

At 27, Bremer is younger than the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans – the former has confirmed that he is leaving United this summer – and he arguably possesses the physical attributes to adjust to the Premier League with ease.
