Sky Sports: Liverpool and Klopp "put out feelers" to sign "fast" defender

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing an "incredibly fast" player with a low release clause, but face competition for his signature from a Premier League rival.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds are slowly running out of time to complete some business during the January transfer window, and it may be that Jurgen Klopp is happy with the players already in his squad.

The one area of the pitch that is arguably a concern, though, is centre-back, with so much onus on Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate staying fit for the rest of the season, following a season-ending injury to Joel Matip.

For that reason, it has been no great surprise to see plenty of central defenders linked with moves to Liverpool, with Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio an individual who has been backed to head to Anfield so often in recent transfer windows. Alternatives to the Portuguese have also been lined up, however, with his Sporting teammate Ousmane Diomande another target for the Merseysiders, and VfB Wolfsburg's Maxence Lacroix.

With Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah also standing out as defensive options for Klopp, he might hold fire until the summer transfer window arrives, but there could be a risk in not adding to his squad this month. Now, another name has been thrown into the ring as a possible signing for Liverpool.

Liverpool interested in Ko Itakura

According to a fresh claim from Sky Sports Germany, Liverpool and Klopp are keen on signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Ko Itakura and have "put out feelers", with Tottenham also interested in snapping him up.

The 26-year-old is believed to have caught the attention of both clubs, and he has a release clause between €10m (£8.6m) and €15m (£12.9m) that could allow them to sign him on the cheap in the summer.

Itakura could be a really savvy addition by Liverpool, whether that be in January or the summer, with the Japan international seemingly at a perfect age to come straight in as a key squad player. He has 23 caps to his name for his country, while TV presenter Haans Kray has hailed him as "incredibly fast", once saying of him:

"One of the very best central defenders in the Eredivisie. He can play football well, he can head well and he is incredibly fast."

Pace

Tackling

Passing

Discipline

Concentration

Injury-prone

Itakura's speed is something that Klopp could really like, given his preference for playing a high line, with pace sometimes needed to thwart danger when opponents counter-attack Liverpool. The fact that his release clause later this year is so low is also a clear bonus, making it less of a risky buy if the signing ends up not working out, so it is difficult to see many negatives on show.

Whether the Monchengladbach ace is willing to take up a squad role remains to be seen, however, but he has only started seven Bundesliga games this season. Some of that is down to injuries, so the Reds would need to make sure they are signing someone who is reliable fitness-wise.

49ers could sign "beast" attacker for Daniel Farke "if Leeds get promoted"

Leeds United are already being linked with summer moves for players, should Daniel Farke’s side earn promotion from the Championship.

Leeds’ January window

The Whites’ main focus was on outgoings and contract renewals in January. Djed Spence saw his season-long loan from Spurs cut short, whereas Luke Ayling left on loan for Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday signed Ian Poveda.

Teenagers Darko Gyabi and Lewis Bate left on loan and Leo Hjelde and Sean McGurk joined Sunderland and Swindon Town on permanent transfers. There was a late incoming at Elland Road, with Connor Roberts joining on loan from Burnley.

Connor Roberts

Farke was happy with the window overall, saying after Leeds’ 1-0 win at Bristol City on Friday:

"It was crucial that we kept our key players, and we did this. We made no secret that we would need one or two defensive players.

"We wanted to bring a specialist in and we found one with Connor Roberts. He's a top class character, fully committed. It's feels like we're the Welsh national team!"

Roberts joins fellow countrymen Jo Rodon, Dan James and Ethan Ampadu in Yorkshire, with Leeds battling for automatic promotion. Should they go up, then attention will once again be on the summer transfer window, with the 49ers Enterprises possibly looking at a long-term target once more.

Leeds linked with Ben Brereton Diaz

Journalist Ben Jacobs, talking to CaugtOffside, relayed by TEAMtalk, shared an update on Ben Brereton Diaz’s future in the last 48 hours. The reporter backed Leeds to revisit their interest in the striker, should they get promoted.

“Come the summer I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Leeds revisiting an old target in Ben Brereton Diaz. He’s at Sheffield United right now but that’s a straight loan, with no option to make permanent. So if Leeds get promoted don’t be surprised if they come back in for Brereton Diaz who has been on their radar for quite some time.”

Leeds’ interest in Brereton Diaz dates back to 2021 when Marcelo Bielsa was still in charge of the club. Former Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray backed the striker in 2020, calling him a “beast”.

“Brereton's like a beast now, and he can score goals. I see it every day in training. He's a brilliant lad and all our lads absolutely love him.

“He's filled out now and he will work so hard for this team. He's very gifted and can score goals. I'm confident that Ben Brereton, given the game time, and remember he needs to get in front of the Armstrongs and the Dacks, can and will do it.

“I can see the physicality level of Brereton these days and he's really looking like a man now, and scored a great goal. He worked his socks off and the more he plays the more confident he'll become.”

The Chile international went from strength to strength at Ewood Park and is now finding his feet in the Premier League on loan at Sheffield United from Villarreal. He’s already scored two goals for the struggling Blades in just 177 minutes of top-flight football, so if the Whites do win promotion, perhaps he could be a shrewd signing to rival the likes of Patrick Bamford, Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter.

Jude Bellingham told he's 'arrogant' ahead of Euro 2024 as England legend Alan Shearer shares disbelief at how 'phenomenal' midfielder has dealt with Real Madrid pressure

Jude Bellingham has been labelled "arrogant" but in a "good way" by Alan Shearer who has been amazed by his form at Real Madrid.

Bellingham had sensational debut season at Real MadridOne of the frontrunners for the Ballon d'OrShearer impressed with his skills both on and off the pitchWHAT HAPPENED?

Bellingham's transition from Borussia Dortmund to one of the world's most prestigious clubs has been remarkable, with the 20-year-old Englishman securing La Liga and Champions League titles in his debut season in the Spanish capital. The hefty price tag did not seem to weigh him down, as he quickly adapted to the pressures and expectations of playing for Los Blancos. His performances on the pitch have been consistently impressive as he ended up with 23 goals and 12 assists across all competitions for Carlo Ancelotti and Co.

As a key player in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, Bellingham is poised to play a crucial role at the upcoming Euro 2024 in Germany. And an impressive showing with the Three Lions will make him one of the firm contenders for the Ballon d'Or.

WHAT SHEARER SAID

Shearer, who has been announced as Betfair's new ambassador ahead of Euro 2024, could not contain his admiration for Bellingham and said: "He’s phenomenal. You can't be anything but hugely impressed because of his stature. He's got an arrogance in a good way, I'm not saying that in a disrespectful way; to be a top player, you need to have that something about you, and he has got that."

The former England striker further emphasized how seamlessly Bellingham has integrated into Real Madrid, a club known for its high standards and intense media scrutiny.

"We all knew he was a great talent, but the way he has gone into one of, if not the, biggest club in the world and taken it on as if it's just a walk in the park or a game in the street, he's playing at the biggest club, it's phenomenal," Shearer added.

"Where he also impresses is the way he handles the media side of things. Fairly or unfairly, you're expected, and it's a duty of you as an England player to go out and speak to the media, and it's the same when you're a Real Madrid player. Not everyone is as eloquent as what you'd want them to be, but the way he handles the questions and the way he handles everything that is thrown at him is so impressive."

Jason Roy to have further scan on torn hamstring

England camp coy on severity of opener’s injury but hopeful he can return against India on June 30

Jason Roy is to undergo a second scan on his torn hamstring on Monday morning.Roy sustained the injury while fielding in the match against West Indies in Southampton on June 14. While the England camp were coy about the severity of the tear, they did express the hope that he would be fit to return to action before the end of the group stages. They have subsequently admitted, however, that the match against India – on June 30 – was probably the earliest possible date for his return.Jason Roy left the field with a left hamstring injury•Getty Images

Roy did not attend training with the rest of the squad on Sunday and is unlikely to be considered available for selection for Tuesday’s match against Australia at Lord’s. Trevor Bayliss, the England coach, has previously confirmed no chances will be taken with Roy’s fitness and he will not be recalled until he has had a chance to prove his fitness. Roy also missed the start of the season after sustaining a hamstring injury during the ODI series in the Caribbean.Roy’s absence has been keenly felt by the England side. He has passed 50 five times in his six most recent ODI innings, 100 three times inhis eight most recent, and has recorded the second-highest score (153 against Bangladesh) of the World Cup to date. His replacement, James Vince, has a top score of 51 in 10 ODIs and has scored 26 and 14 in his two innings in this tournament. While the second scan is largely routine – the England medical team are keen to gain a clearer picture of how Roy is healing and how much longer he may be unavailable – there is a possibility the results will end Roy’s involvement in the World Cup. Although the England management are keenly aware of Roy’s value, they will know they cannot carry a player who has little possibility of recovering in time to play a meaningful part.England will need to win at least one, and possibly two, of their remaining group games if they are to qualify for the semi-finals. Their final group match is against New Zealand, in Durham, on July 3. The semi-finals take place on July 9 and 11.Roy has not trained since the incident. While he has generally appeared at training – he has sometimes refereed the inter-squad football matches and did have half-a-dozen throw-downs the day before the game in Leeds – the England management have been keen to prevent him running or doing anything else to exacerbate the injury. If Roy is ruled out of the rest of the tournament, Joe Denly and Dawid Malanwould appear to be the most likely replacements.

Celtic could forget Kurzawa with last-gasp swoop for £9m-rated gem

Scottish champions Celtic have thus far only secured the signing of Rapid Vienna winger, Nicolas Kuhn during the mid-season window, although with the deadline looming large, there is expected to be further activity at Parkhead.

Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph had revealed earlier in January that the Old Firm outfit were prioritising the signing of a new striker and a left-back, with one box already seemingly ticked with Norwich City forward Adam Idah reportedly jetting into Glasgow ahead of a potential switch.

The impending addition of the Republic of Ireland marksman could then be followed by the arrival of a full-back over the coming hours, with manager Brendan Rodgers seeking cover and competition for Greg Taylor on the left flank.

Celtic eyeing Premier League starlet

As the Daily Mail reported yesterday, the Hoops are believed to have been offered the chance to sign Paris Saint-Germain star, Layvin Kurzawa in a last-gasp move, with the 31-year-old seeking a fresh start having made just a solitary Ligue 1 appearance this term.

The Frenchman isn't the only player on Celtic's radar, however, with journalist Mark Hendry revealing that the club have also been "linked" with a swoop for Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster, Hugo Bueno.

Hugo Bueno

Although the suggestion is that the Premier League side have knocked back that interest, the hope will be that the exciting Spaniard can follow his ex-teammate Fabio Silva – who made the move to Rangers this month – in trading the Midlands for Glasgow.

How Hugo Bueno compares to Kurzawa

Signing an experienced figure like Kurzawa – who has won four league titles in Paris – would not be without merit, although the defender's lack of game time at the Parc des Princes this term should be a real cause for concern, after also featuring just six times while on loan at Fulham last season.

Unlike the ageing former France international, Bueno, by contrast, appears to still have the best years ahead of him, with the 21-year-old having previously been lauded as "a promising talent" by journalist Liam Keen amid his recent rise at Molineux.

Valued at around €10m (£9m) by CIES Football Observatory, the 5 foot 11 ace has made 12 top-flight appearances so far this term for the Old Gold, albeit while earning just four starts under Gary O'Neil – hence the need to move elsewhere before the close of play today.

The Spain U21 international did previously sparkle during a breakout season last time out, however, having made 21 Premier League appearances in 2022/23, notably creating one 'big chance' in that time, while also averaging 2.1 tackles and interceptions per game.

Kurzawa, meanwhile, was hampered by injury while plying his trade with the Cottagers last term, featuring just three times in England's top flight, having failed to create a single 'big chance', while also averaging just 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game.

The addition of the more youthful Bueno would offer the benefit of his willingness to get forward down the left flank, showcased by the fact that he ranks in the top 16% for progressive carries and the top 17% for successful take-ons per 90, among those in his position in Europe's top five leagues.

Such statistics – as per FBref – aren't even available for Lurzawa such have been his shortage of minutes, with it hard to justify plumping for a player who is believed to be raking in around £99k-per-week at PSG.

Celtic could land £4m-rated Idah alternative before the deadline

Celtic are on the hunt for a new striker before the transfer window slams shut on Thursday evening.

ByMatt Dawson Jan 31, 2024

Although there may be concerns over Bruno's own limited action so far this season, the Vigo-born dynamo – who "has what it takes to become a top-class left back", according to writer Zach Lowy – would represent a far more exciting addition for those of a Celtic persuasion on deadline day.

Epic final tied, Super Over tied, England win World Cup on boundary count

Jofra Archer, and England, held their nerve in the World Cup’s first Super Over finish to claim the trophy for the first time

The Report by Alan Gardner14-Jul-2019
Super over
As it happenedIt was never going to be easy, was it? Two teams without a World Cup title between them in 44 years of the men’s competition. After 100 overs, the last couple of which contained almost as much drama as a few previous finals in their entirety, nothing could separate England and New Zealand. For the first time in World Cup history, a Super Over was required to determine the winner.Asked to score 16 from six balls, Jimmy Neesham coolly struck Jofra Archer’s second legitimate delivery way back into the Mound Stand, making the equation seven off four. A brace of twos followed, before Archer’s bumper took Neesham off strike. Martin Guptill, at the end of a tournament of personal trial, needing to hit two more otherwise England would take the trophy on boundaries scored. Archer found a yorker, Guptill found deep midwicket and Jason Roy’s throw found Guptill short; Jos Buttler completed the run-out at full stretch to end all those years of hurt and an afternoon of exquisite agony. What the playing conditions say

– In the event of a Super Over tie, the team that hit more boundaries (combined from the main match and the Super Over) shall be the winner

– If the number of boundaries hit by both teams is equal, the team whose batsmen scored more boundaries during its innings in the main match (ignoring the Super Over) shall be the winner

– If still equal, a count-back from the final ball of the Super Over will be conducted. The team with the higher scoring delivery shall be the winner. If a team loses two wickets during its over, then any unbowled deliveries will be counted as dot balls

England had only got close in their chase thanks to Buttler and Ben Stokes, whose 110-run stand lifted the home nation from peril at 86 for 4. The pair walked out again to scramble 15 from an over of Trent Boult: pressure back on New Zealand. They responded by sending out Neesham, a man who not so long ago was contemplating quitting the game, to face Archer, in his 14th ODI. Only one could finish a hero. That said, there were heroes aplenty on both sides. For the second game in succession, New Zealand put up a score in the region of 240 and defended it with every fibre of their Blackcapped beings. Just when they appeared to have the game won, a man born in Christchurch ripped it from their hands, in a manner at once extraordinary and unbelievable. Stokes finished unbeaten on 84, though like Guptil he too could not manage a two from the final ball of England’s innings to win the game in regulation time.New Zealand had gone into the final over believing that the trophy was in their grasp. England needed 15, Stokes carrying a country’s hopes – not to mention the almost unbearable weight of history – on his shoulders. The first two balls bowled by Boult were dots, before Stokes mowed the third for six into the crowd at midwicket. Then came an intervention that was either cruel or miraculous, depending on your perspective. Stokes, diving for his ground as he attempted to complete a second run, diverted Guptill’s throw off his bat – inadvertantly – past wicketkeeper Tom Latham and away to the rope for four more.Jos Buttler runs out Martin Guptill to crown England champions•Getty Images

Stokes immediately held up his hands in apology, but with no sign that he had changed the course of his run to intercept the throw, it went down as a second consecutive six. That left England needing three from two, though Boult kept his cool to twice run out the non-striker coming back for a second and send the game into a Super Over. The previous over, something almost as extraordinary had occurred: having caught Stokes on the boundary at wide long-on, Boult stepped on the rope before he could relay the ball back in to Guptill. Instead of Stokes departing for 63, with England needing 22 off eight and Nos. 9 and 10 at the crease, he was granted another shot at redemption. Instead of Kolkata Part II, this was to become his finest hour, Stokes ultimately crowned man of the match after leading England to victory in a World Cup final at the fourth time of asking. There is a new name on the cup, then, but they didn’t half keep the engravers waiting. England had built towards this competition for four years, planned for it, yearned for it – and when the moment came, the outburst was rapturous. Staid and stuffy Lord’s had become a cauldron of emotion long before that last passage of play.New Zealand deserved better than to end up the fall guys again. Their captain, Kane Williamson, orchestrated his men in the field to squeeze England’s chase until it became unbearable. First Buttler fell with 46 required from the last 31 balls, Lockie Ferguson delivering what seemed to be the killer blow. Stokes staggered on, even as the tail became expendable. Ultimately, the fact England had scored 24 boundaries in their innings, compared to New Zealand’s 16, was the decisive factor. That one of England’s fours was effectively an overthrow may always rankle, as well as a couple of the umpiring decisions that went the other way. Williamson, who made only 30 but captained with nerves of steel and was named man of the tournament, called the runs via Stokes’ deflection “a shame” but suggested that for New Zealand, beaten finalists for the second World Cup running, it was just not meant to be.The very first delivery of England’s chase gave an indication of how nerve-shredding a contest this would become. Boult produced a curving inswinger to hit Jason Roy squarely on the front pad and 4.8m primarily rugby-loving people went up in unison. Marais Erasmus shook his head and although New Zealand chose to review, it was Roy who benefited from the marginal nature of umpire’s call.Eoin Morgan holds the World Cup aloft•Getty Images

The opening exchanges were a blur of black and blue, with bruises on both sides, when Matt Henry finally located Roy’s outside edge. England’s opening partnership has been totemic and Roy had swaggered into this final, so the importance of his dismissal was twofold in that it both dented English confidence and deprived the chase of a man who might quickly reduce the odds in their favour. With Henry bowling a beautiful spell and Joe Root unable to find his rhythm, New Zealand clawed their way into the ascendency. The tension was enervating, Lord’s subdued. Colin de Grandhomme dropped Bairstow off his own bowling, a reaction chance to his midriff, as New Zealand strung together three maidens in a row. Root then cracked: hit on the pads and then beaten when he gave de Grandhomme the charge, he next threw his bat at a wide outswinger to be caught behind. In stultifying conditions, New Zealand applied a choke hold. Bairstow dragged on against the pace of Ferguson, who then brilliantly caught Eoin Morgan running in from deep point. Meanwhile de Grandhomme, playing the role of a latter-day Madan Lal, bowled ten overs off the reel.Nothing about this contest was straightforward, including the decision at the toss, which had been delayed by 15 minutes due to early morning rain. Williamson chose to bat, in keeping with the dominant trend at this tournament – runs on the board matter. While England bowled well enough, a Powerplay score of 33 for 1 left the teams circling each other warily; New Zealand happy to have only lost Guptill, England eager to send back Williamson, too, as quickly as possible. With Henry Nicholls providing the first half-century by a New Zealand opener since the opening game, they were able to establish a foothold. As in the group match between these two, Nicholls was given out lbw on zero by a Chris Woakes delivery that was going over the stumps; this time, on the biggest stage, he had the wherewithal to use New Zealand’s review.England thought they might have removed Guptill inside the first couple of overs, too, only for Erasmus to correctly adjudge that the ball from Archer had flicked the batsman’s trousers rather than outside edge. Guptill’s response was to try and hit a way out of his rut, ramping Archer for six and smashing another boundary back down the ground. But Woakes brought one back inside an expansive drive to hit the back leg, and Guptill’s wasted review was to have consequences later on.Nicholls and Williamson played sensibly to put on 74 but, whether it was the pitch or the occasion, the innings nevertheless began to enter a gentle tailspin from the moment Williamson was removed by Liam Plunkett – DRS again required to overturn the on-field call. Nicholls chopped on against another Plunkett cross-seamer four overs later, and then New Zealand were left to curse their luck when Ross Taylor was given out lbw, despite ball-tracking showing the ball going over the top of leg stump. It would not end up being the only talking point of the day.
