Title-winning flop eyed by Newcastle scouts if takeover falls through

Newcastle United appear to be preparing for life as usual with the Magpies scouts eyeing up a move for a new striker this summer.

What’s the word?

According to the Shields Gazette, Toon are moving ahead with their transfer plans despite the takeover saga continuing to rumble on into a 17th week of deliberations.

It’s claimed that the northeast outfit could launch an audacious loan swoop for Real Madrid flop Luka Jovic as they ‘look to inject goals’ into Steve Bruce’s misfiring frontline.

The 22-year-old earned a £60m move from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer but has only been able to feature for a total of 420 minutes, scoring twice, in La Liga as Los Galacticos clinched the crown from Barcelona.

Jovic is now valued at a mere £28.8m by Transfermarkt.

Joelinton benefit

Bruce’s strikers have endured a torrid time in the Premier League this season, scoring just five goals between them. It speaks volumes that Jonjo Shelvey, a box-to-box midfielder has bagged more on his own (six).

A move for Jovic is certainly interesting given his disappointing campaign in the Spanish capital but Toon’s scouts must’ve seen a fair bit of him in the Bundesliga last season considering that’s where they spotted Joelinton’s exploits at Hoffenheim.

However, the Serb international pretty much outranked United’s record £40m signing in all facets.

Firstly, he netted ten more goals than the Brazilian but Jovic also averaged more shots (three) and fewer dispossessions (1.4) and unsuccessful touches (2.3).

With Bruce admitting that Joelinton’s future may lie wider on the pitch, a move for a striker who scored over double the number of goals than he did could be shrewd business, particularly if it’s on loan as there’s far less financial risk at stake.

His introduction could certainly hand the Magpies’ two-goal frontman a new lease of life.

Tottenham Hotspur: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg could be available for a cut-price deal

Tottenham are holding talks with Southampton to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer.

Jose Mourinho has identified Hojbjerg as his top target to transform the side that he inherited from Mauricio Pochettino.

Hojbjerg has made it clear he wants to leave Southampton as he is looking for a new challenge. He will be out of contract next year and this summer could be the last chance for Ralph Hasenhuttl to cash in on his former captain.

According to Football Insider, Spurs are negotiating with the Saints over a possible move, with Tottenham confident that they can complete a deal for the Dane this summer. The Saints were demanding £35m for the ex-Bayern Munich ace but he could be available for a cut-price deal worth £20m as they are eager to get rid of him as soon as possible.

Although Daniel Levy is infamously tight-fisted, the club believe that they will be able to reach an agreement with Southampton in a matter of weeks.

Hojbjerg was stripped of the captain’s armband after refusing to sign a new deal with the Saints and a move is surely in the interests of both parties involved.

Spurs have borrowed a huge sum of money from the Bank of England, as Levy has taken out a £175m loan to cover the costs of these uncertain times. However, the club have held early discussions with his agent Pini Zahavi to sort out conditions of the contract.

Everything seems to be working in Tottenham’s favour, as Zahavi has a strong relationship with Mourinho, which should in theory smooth things over.

As it stands, Spurs should easily be able to afford the asking price, as they splashed the cash to sign Tanguy Ndombele last year. However, clubs are working under extreme conditions, so fans will have to wait and see what deals can be made before the transfer window closes.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans rage at club’s tweet about Castore kit launch

It is the day that many Glasgow Rangers fans have been waiting for – tomorrow, July 1, the club’s new home kit for the 2020/21 campaign will be revealed.

The shirts for the upcoming season will be made by Castore after the ‘Gers signed a new deal with the Liverpool-based company. It brings an end to their partnership with Hummel and this new contract is set to be worth a cool £25m over five years for the club.

It brings in a new era at Ibrox and this season will be a big one for Steven Gerrard as he looks to win his first piece of silverware with the 54-time Scottish champions – as such, everything building up to the new campaign will be under intense scrutiny from the Ibrox club’s supporters.

The Light Blues’ official Twitter account shared the news and it led to plenty of reaction from the fans – they didn’t seem too happy though, for a number reasons. Simon Hughes reveals key change behind the scenes at Liverpool

The Athletic journalist Simon Hughes said that the pathway between the academy and the first team at Liverpool is as clear as it has been since the 1990s, in an interview with The Anfield Wrap.

What did he say?

This season has seen a number of talented youngsters emerge at Liverpool and begin knocking on the door for first-team minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the obvious example and has established himself as a starter and a crucial part of the team, but Nico Williams, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott have also impressed.

Speaking to Liverpool podcast, The Anfield Wrap, Hughes said that the improvement in their academy is no mistake and is the result of more consistency and clarity at the club.

“I think at this moment in time, the pathway between the academy and the first team is, I don’t want to say clear, that is that wrong word, but there’s great accessibility and possibilities on that pathway than there has been at any point since the early 1990s,” Simon Hughes told The Anfield Wrap.

“I think the reason why is because the club has benefited from certain periods of consistency. Jurgen Klopp has been in charge for five years now but it still feels fresh, which is brilliant. I think for fans and everybody it still feels like it’s early days for them for some reason, but he’s been there for five years.

“Things are very clear about what it takes to become a Liverpool player and you know, one thing that I took from interviewing people and writing that article is if you don’t work hard and if you don’t get about the pitch you’ve got no chance, which I think is a great basis for any footballer, because they know, they can’t afford to think that they’re very good at any point.”

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Building for the future

Liverpool have as promising a group of academy players as they have had in some time, with Jones, in particular, pushing for greater involvement.

As Klopp’s current side begins to age, with a number of key figures now entering their late prime years, rejuvenating the squad will be really important and the academy clearly has a role to play in that.

Rhian Brewster, Ovie Ejaria and Harry Wilson have also impressed on loan spells and might hope for more first-team action next year.

Real Madrid loanee Achraf Hakimi dropped a masterful display vs Inter Milan

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Borussia Dortmund have a tall task this season.

Not only do they have to fight against their raging neighbours back in Bundesliga, but they also have one of the toughest Champions League groups out there with the likes of Barcelona and Inter Milan threatening their progress to the knockout stages.

But so far, they’re holding their own on all fronts – they are second in both competitions and definitely in the race to go the distance come the latter stages of the campaign.

And seeing their performances as of late, there are a lot of things to be optimistic about if you are a fan of the Yellow Wall or, interestingly enough, a Real Madrid enthusiast.

The reason for that is quite simple and comes in the form of a 21-year-old defender, Achraf Hakimi.

Los Blancos’ Moroccan loanee has simply been on fire this season, giving his temporary team a huge boost when it mattered the most – in the Champions League.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Just recently, Borussia Dortmund welcomed Inter Milan at Signal Iduna Park and salvaged all three points, mounting a sensational comeback from being 2-0 down to winning 3-2 in the end.

Needless to say, with his two goals on the night, Hakimi was a crucial part of their triumph. But he did more than just that – he also deployed four shots, two of which were on target, three key passes and maintained a 86.1% passing accuracy.

Going the other way, Hakimi also tallied one tackle and one foul to his name, warranting an 8.31 Man of the Match rating by WhoScored’s ranking system.

By all means, Zinedine Zidane will be thrilled to hear his 21-year-old loanee was brilliant once again.

So far, he has played four games for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, scoring four goals in total.

This becomes even more impressive when we factor in that he’s actually a defender by trade.

If Hakimi continues developing like this, Real Madrid’s future will definitely be in safe hands.

It still remains to be seen, however, what kind of plans Los Blancos have with this exceptional young talent.

Leeds fans praying James Milner returns, but have they been mislead?

Some Leeds United fans have got their hopes up about James Milner signing for the club after the Yorkshire Evening Post sent out a rather misleading tweet using quotes from the midfielder’s book.

As we have been over before on FFC, the actual full set of quotes make it seem as if the Liverpool man is tentative to return to his boyhood club, but the paper chose to neglect those parts in their social media post.

This has understandably sent a small section of the fanbase into a frenzy, but their excitement might actually be shortlived.

Milner went onto say the following: “But at the same time, they say ‘Never go back,’ don’t they? What happens if you go back and it isn’t the fairy-tale finish? Would it be the right thing for me? Would it be the right thing for them?”

On that evidence, supporters perhaps shouldn’t be getting their hopes up.

In reality, it seems rather unlikely that the £13.5m-rated Milner will sign for the Whites anytime soon unless the stars perfectly align in the near future.

Fans won’t like to hear it, but they’ve been misled by this small selection of quotes, and their responses on Twitter show that they’ve not looked deeper into what was actually said.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on social media…

Barcelona’s underwhelming display in Prague has a silver lining

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

The Champions League is something every big team in Europe aspires to win.

In many ways, it represents the best that club football has to offer and for that exact reason, it wouldn’t really be a stretch to state that Barcelona desperately want to get their hands on the trophy once again.

Last time that happened was in 2014/15 when the team was under Luis Enrique and ever since that moment, they’ve been extremely underwhelming in Europe.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Of course, by now everyone knows about their hiccups in Turin, Rome and Liverpool respectively as the Catalans have strung together quite an impressive series of humiliating losses.

And even though it was far from a real disaster, their latest Champions League clash was underwhelming as well, to say the least.

Barcelona travelled away to Slavia Prague and after a night filled with blood, sweat and tears, they somehow snatched away all three points with a narrow 2-1 victory.

But it was all but comfortable as Marc-Andre ter Stegen had to put a heroic display to keep the hosts away from their net and strikes from Lionel Messi and a lucky own goal sealed the deal.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

Ter Stegen himself spoke to Movistar Plus (via Goal) after the game and was clearly upset and even stated that they have a lot to discuss after such a horrible performance.

Another star that wasn’t happy was Frenkie de Jong, who lauded their victory as “lucky”.

And despite both of them being spot on with their assessments, this game could still be a blessing in disguise for the Blaugrana.

After all, it seems they are all aware of the problem and are willing to work on finding the solution as soon as possible. Besides, it’s better for these kinds of games to happen now, in the group stages, than later on when the Catalans can’t really afford another hiccup along the way.

By all standards, the squad is still experiencing big issues and it will be up to Valverde to try and find the necessary solution in the near future.

But the clash against Slavia Prague, no matter how uncomfortable or even embarrassing it was, can serve the purpose of being a wake-up call of sorts, an alarm bell ringing in their ears and signalling that something has to change.

Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if Barcelona get the message and patch up the holes in time.

If they don’t, we all know what could be coming in those knockout stages.
